Book excerpt: The 17th University Conference on Ceramics, which also was the 7th LBL/MMRD International Materials Symposium, was held on the campus of the University of California at Berkeley from July 28 to August 1, 1980. It was devoted to the subject of surfaces and interfaces in ceramic and ceramic-metal systems. The program was timely and of great interest, as indicated by the large number of contributed papers, which included contributions from ten foreign countries. These proceedings are divided into the following categories dealing with the chemistry and physics of interfaces: calculations of interface/surface states, characterization of surfaces and inter faces, thermodynamics of interfaces, influence of surface and inter faces on selected ceramic processes, grain boundary structures, effects of grain boundaries on deformation and fracture, interfacial phenomena, formation of interfaces, development of adhesion, and reactions at interfaces. A number of papers deal specifically with the Si-Si02 interface, which probably has received more attention than any other because of its importance in the electronics industry. This coverage fulfills the principal objective of the symposium which was to explore and assess the current fundamental understand ing of interfaces and surfaces. A parallel objective of the symposium was fulfilled by a group of papers dealing with the correlation of interfacial characteris tics with mechanical behavior. This group includes papers dealing with the adherence of dissimilar materials at interfaces.

Book excerpt: The objective of this research project is to investigate the fundamental mechanical properties of the metal-ceramic interface, and to relate those properties to the atomic structure of interface. Until this point we have emphasized the development of innovative techniques for (i) measuring the shear strength of the interface, and (ii) the interfacial energy of the metal-ceramic interface. In the present phase these techniques are being applied to model metal-ceramic systems. The ultimate shear strength of the silica-copper interface has been measured to be in the range 570 MPa to 1670 MPa. This interface had been suspected to be strong but these are the first quantitative measurements of its shear strength. The interfacial energy of the interface is being measured by measuring the contact angle between the metal and the ceramic. It has been found that poor wetting between the copper-alumina interface causes the copper film to become unstable and break up into small spheres. Keywords: Interfaces, Metal-ceramic, Composites. By using simple one-dimensional interdiffusion simulations, it was demonstrated that the base metal in ceramic/metal joints plays an essential role in determine the thermochemical interactions at the ceramic/metal interface during ceramic/metal joining operations. In general it was found that, using all these techniques, it was possible to explain diffusion paths and reaction sequences observed in a great number of zirconia/active-metal systems, both in the solid and in the liquid states. In many cases, the morphology of the reaction layers formed at ceramic/metal interfaces determine their final properties. To address this problem, empirical thermodynamic models of the likely reaction products at zirconia/metal interfaces were coupled to kinetic models using the diffuse-interface formalism to successfully describe the formation and evolution of complex ceramic/metal interfacial structures.
