Book Interfacial Engineering for Optimized Properties II

Download or read book Interfacial Engineering for Optimized Properties II written by C. Barry Carter and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interfaces control the properties of many technologically important materials. For many years, however, alloys have primarily been designed with the focus on optimizing bulk properties. Recently, much more attention has been paid to designing interfaces to improve the performance of materials. This idea has been central in the development of nanoscale devices in the electronics industry, but now these concepts have also been applied to both grain boundaries and phase boundaries in structural materials. There has been a breakthrough in the area of advanced experimental tools, such as the analysis of electron backscattering patterns and in the improved simulation capabilities of interfaces in complex engineering alloys. Third has been the recognition that failures often are associated with interfaces and that materials can be processed to improve the properties. This book, first published in 2000, concentrates on the preparation and processing of interfaces, the relationships between chemistry and structure and the properties and behavior of interfaces, particularly in relation to strength and bonding.

Book Interfacial Engineering for Optimized Properties Volume 458

Download or read book Interfacial Engineering for Optimized Properties Volume 458 written by Clyde L. Briant and published by . This book was released on 1997-07-08 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of interfaces is one of the oldest areas of research in materials science. The presence of grain boundaries in materials has long been recognized, as has its crucial role in determining mechanical properties. Another long-recognized concept is that the properties of a surface are quite different from those of the bulk. In recent years, researchers have been able to study these interfaces, both internal and external, with a detail not before possible. These advances have stemmed from the ability to obtain atomic resolution images of interfaces, to measure accurate chemical compositions of interfaces, and to model these interfaces and their properties. This volume goes a step further, beyond structural and chemical studies, to explore how all of this information can be used to engineer interfaces for improved properties and overall improved material performance. Significant attention is given to the crystallographic nature of grain boundaries and interfaces, and the relationship between this nature and the performance of a material. The versatility of electron back-scattering pattern analysis (EBSP) in solving a number of interface-related problems is also featured.

Book Grain Boundaries and Crystalline Plasticity

Download or read book Grain Boundaries and Crystalline Plasticity written by Louisette Priester and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-02-07 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main purpose of this book is to put forward the fundamental role of grain boundaries in the plasticity of crystalline materials. To understand this role requires a multi-scale approach to plasticity: starting from the atomic description of a grain boundary and its defects, moving on to the elemental interaction processes between dislocations and grain boundaries, and finally showing how the microscopic phenomena influence the macroscopic behaviors and constitutive laws. It involves bringing together physical, chemical and mechanical studies. The investigated properties are: deformation at low and high temperature, creep, fatigue and rupture.

Book Interfacial Engineering for Optimized Properties III

Download or read book Interfacial Engineering for Optimized Properties III written by Christopher A. Schuh and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the structure-property relationship of interfaces in materials. Rather than concentrating on a specific class of materials, it brings together a diverse group of researchers with varied interests to seek a common foundation on which to build future efforts in interfacial engineering. Both experimental and simulation contributions address the details of how interface character and the interfacial network topology in polycrystals influence mechanical properties like yield, ductility, creep and cracking resistance, as well as electronic or magnetic properties like superconductivity or ferroaelectricity. A number of contributions deal specifically with the need for more detailed understanding of the structure of individual interfaces, the statistical distribution of their character, and their connectivity in a polycrystalline structure. Topics include: the role of interfaces and deformation and fracture; chemical and environmental effects; surfaces, thin films and functional materials; structure and migration of interfaces; and interface structure, networks and correlations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this major reference work is to provide a first point of entry to the literature for the researchers in any field relating to structural integrity in the form of a definitive research/reference tool which links the various sub-disciplines that comprise the whole of structural integrity. Special emphasis will be given to the interaction between mechanics and materials and structural integrity applications. Because of the interdisciplinary and applied nature of the work, it will be of interest to mechanical engineers and materials scientists from both academic and industrial backgrounds including bioengineering, interface engineering and nanotechnology. The scope of this work encompasses, but is not restricted to: fracture mechanics, fatigue, creep, materials, dynamics, environmental degradation, numerical methods, failure mechanisms and damage mechanics, interfacial fracture and nano-technology, structural analysis, surface behaviour and heart valves. The structures under consideration include: pressure vessels and piping, off-shore structures, gas installations and pipelines, chemical plants, aircraft, railways, bridges, plates and shells, electronic circuits, interfaces, nanotechnology, artificial organs, biomaterial prostheses, cast structures, mining... and more. Case studies will form an integral part of the work.

Book Nucleation and Growth Processes in Materials

Download or read book Nucleation and Growth Processes in Materials written by Antonios Gonis and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the goals of materials science is to design alloys with pre-specified desirable technological properties. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to have a thorough understanding of the fundamental mechanisms underlying materials behavior. In particular, one must understand the effects on alloy properties caused by intentional changes in concentration and how the combinations of temperature, time and uncontrollable foreign impurities affect microstructure. In addition to the equilibrium phase information contained in phase diagrams, nonequilibrium dynamic processes and metastable phases are known to be crucial in determining materials properties. This volume brings together researchers working on various aspects of nonequilibrium processes in materials to discuss current research issues and to provide guidelines for future work. Particular attention was paid to understanding particle nucleation and growth, both experimentally and theoretically, solid-state reactions, nanosystems, liquid-solid transformations, and solidification and amorphization. On the theoretical side, fundamental principles governing nucleation and growth, and related phenomena such as coarsening and Ostwald ripening, are discussed. Progress is also reported on the phase field method and on Monte Carlo simulations.

Book Wide Bandgap Electronic Devices Volume 622

Download or read book Wide Bandgap Electronic Devices Volume 622 written by R. J. Shul and published by . This book was released on 2001-04-09 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in wide-bandgap semiconductors for high-power/high-temperature electronics remains prominent. For such applications, SiC is by far the most mature semiconductor material. GaN and diamond, however, have also become prime candidates. While diamond has several advantages over the other two materials, producing large single crystals, as well as the inability to achieve n-type doping, have limited device fabrication. For GaN, recent advances in crystal growth and processing capabilities, as well as excellent transport properties, have yielded a great deal of device development, yet thermal conduction remains an issue. SiC has excellent thermal conductivity, high-breakdown voltages, and well-developed substrates and processing techniques. This book deals with a wide range of technical activity in the area of wide-bandgap high-power/high-temperature electronic devices and covers topics including the fabrication and performance of GaN-based and SiC-based devices, as well as issues related to growth, characterization, and processing of wide-bandgap materials. Several summaries of the current status of the field are provided.
