Book Elevated Temperature Effects on Interface Shear Behavior

Download or read book Elevated Temperature Effects on Interface Shear Behavior written by Tanay Karademir and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental conditions such as temperature inevitably impact the long term performance, strength and deformation characteristics of most materials in infrastructure applications. The mechanical and durability properties of geosynthetic materials are strongly temperature dependent. The interfaces between geotextiles and geomembranes as well as between granular materials such as sands and geomembranes in landfill applications are subject to temperature changes due to seasonal temperature variations as well as exothermic reactions occurring in the waste body. This can be a critical factor governing the stability of modern waste containment lining systems. Historically, most laboratory geosynthetic interface testing has been performed at room temperature. Information today is emerging that shows how temperatures in the liner systems of landfills can be much higher. : An extensive research study was undertaken in an effort to investigate temperature effects on interface shear behavior between (a) NPNW polypropylene geotextiles and both smooth PVC as well as smooth and textured HDPE geomembranes and (b) sands of different angularity and smooth PVC and HDPE geomembranes. A temperature controlled chamber was designed and developed to simulate elevated temperature field conditions and shear displacement-failure mechanisms at these higher temperatures. The physical laboratory testing program consisted of multiple series of interface shear tests between material combinations found in landfill applications under a range of normal stress levels from 10 to 400 kPa and at a range of test temperatures from 20 to 50 ©3¡2©60́9©3℗Øâ0́(℗Ơ©5¡©3¡2â2́Ơš©30́(©2°C.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the 12th International Conference on Geosynthetics (12 ICG), held in Roma, Italy, 17-21 September 2023. About 750 Authors - Academics, Researchers, Students, Practitioners, Contractors and Manufacturers – contributed to the peer-reviewed papers of this volume, which includes the Giroud lecture, the Bathurst lecture, the Rowe lecture, four keynote lectures and 296 technical papers. The content of these proceedings illustrates the sustainable use of geosynthetics in a variety of innovative as well as consolidated applications. After the sustainability implications in the correct use of geosynthetics, the ability to overcome the natural events effects, often related to the climate change, and to adequately afford the human activities (as the increase of pollution) forced to refer to a new keyword: Resiliency. The 12 ICG intends to become the base for the next step, hence the conference theme is 'Geosynthetics, Leading the Way to a Resilient Planet'. The conference topics, through general and parallel sessions, invited presentations and keynote lectures, address the most recent developments in geosynthetic engineering, and stimulate fruitful technical and scientific interaction among academicians, professionals, manufacturers, students. The 12 ICG proceedings contain a wealth of information that could be useful for researchers, practitioners and all those working in the broad, innovative and dynamic field of geosynthetics.

Book Characterization and Behavior of Interfaces

Download or read book Characterization and Behavior of Interfaces written by J. David Frost and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interfaces exist in every geotechnical system in many forms and at multiple scales. Although historically, they are often considered to be the weak link in a system, particularly as the result of a number of unexpected catastrophic failures, new insight gained over the past twenty years by researchers around the world has shown that it is possible to select combinations of materials and design an engineered interface so that it is at least as strong as the surrounding materials. These new insights have been gained as a result of experimental study, numerical modeling and analytical investigation of successful and failed systems. While individual technical papers have been presented and/or published in various forums and proceedings over the years, no technical event has ever been convened for the sole purpose of allowing for exchange of information and ideas pertaining to geotechnical interfaces. The research symposium held in September 2008 in Atlanta Georgia, USA, in conjunction with the Fourth International Symposium on Deformation Characteristics of Geomaterials (IS Atlanta 2008) at the Georgia Institute of Technology on The Characterization and Behavior of Interfaces addressed this deficiency and the papers presented at that event are contained in this publication. IOS Press is an international science, technical and medical publisher of high-quality books for academics, scientists, and professionals in all fields. Book Effect of Time on Soil geomembrane Interface Shear Strength

Download or read book Effect of Time on Soil geomembrane Interface Shear Strength written by Saeed Kloofah Alzahrani and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past thirty years, geosynthetic materials have been used widely in various civil engineering applications due to their numerous advantages. Geomembranes are one of the most common geosynthetics that are used primarily as an impervious boundary for liquids or gases. High density polyethylene (HDPE), the material used for geomembranes, shows a viscoelastic behavior to the applied loads over a period of time in the form of creep or stress relaxation. Effect of time on soil-geomembrane shear strength is critical factor that should be studied carefully, because soil-geomembrane interfaces usually form weak planes and may cause failures. A series of large direct shear tests were carried out in the laboratory to investigate the effect of time on soil-geomembrane interface shear strength. The geomembrane samples were placed under a sustained load for two weeks then the shear tests were performed. The test results showed that the interface friction angle increases with time due to further penetration of soil particles into the geomembrane, resulting in the increase of soil-geomembrane contact areas. This thesis presents the tests performed, results obtained, discussion of the results, findings, and recommendations for future studies

Book DSC HISS Modeling Applications for Problems in Mechanics Geomechanics and Structural Mechanics

Download or read book DSC HISS Modeling Applications for Problems in Mechanics Geomechanics and Structural Mechanics written by Chandrakant S. Desai and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-11-30 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the mechanical behavior of solids and contacts (interfaces and joints) is vital for the analysis, design, and maintenance of engineering systems. Materials may simultaneously experience the effects of many factors such as elastic, plastic, and creep strains; different loading (stress) paths; volume change under shear stress; and microcracking leading to fracture and failure, strain softening, or degradation. Typically, the available models account for only one factor at a time; however, the disturbed state concept (DSC) with the hierarchical single-surface (HISS) plasticity is a unified modeling approach that can allow for numerous factors simultaneously, and in an integrated manner. DSC/HISS Modeling Applications for Problems in Mechanics, Geomechanics, and Structural Mechanics provides readers with comprehensive information including the basic concepts and applications for the DSC/HISS modeling regarding a wide range of engineering materials and contacts. Uniformity in format and content of each chapter will make it easier for the reader to appreciate the potential of using the DSC/HISS modeling across various applications. Features: • Presents a new and simplified way to learn characterizations and behaviors of materials and contacts under various conditions • Offers modeling applicable to several different materials including geologic (clays, sands, rocks), modified geologic materials (structured soils, overconsolidated soils, expansive soils, loess, frozen soils, chemically treated soils), hydrate-bearing sediments, and more.
