Book Introducing the Old Testament Books

Download or read book Introducing the Old Testament Books written by Paul D. Weaver and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many introductions to the Old Testament are either too simple, not providing all the necessary information, or overly complicated and written at a level out of the reach of an average person without seminary training. This work is neither. The author is thorough, (providing over 500 footnotes), but at a level that is understandable, and in a concise manner. In this work, Weaver answers important questions such as:-who wrote the book?-when was it written?-where was it written?-why was it written?-to whom was it written? The author also presents a convincing biblical/conservative response to those critical of the Scriptures, answering such questions as:-how was the Pentateuch (Genesis-Deuteronomy) transmitted?-who was the Pharaoh of the exodus?-when did the exodus occur?-are the census numbers recorded in the book of Numbers accurate?-is the chronology of the kings recorded in the book of 1 & 2 Kings reliable?-does the book of Esther belong in the canon of Scripture?-is there more than one author of the book of Isaiah?-who was Darius the Mede (a character in the book of Daniel)?-is the story of Jonah historical?Additionally, Weaver develops the most important theological themes found within each respective book of the Old Testament. One of the great features of this book, not found in most other introductions, are the descriptions of archaeological discoveries (both sites and artifacts), which affirm the historicity of the Scriptures. Such an addition, will build your faith and strengthen your confidence in the inspired Word.In this work, the author demonstrates his passion and commitment to provide high quality resources, at an affordable price, within the reach of anyone serious about studying God's Word.Get your copy today!

Book excerpt: Treat yourself to a bold adventure through the Bible. You will start off in familiar territory, but will soon find yourself exploring ancient texts from the time of Jesus and beyond. These new viewpoints will bring different answers than you may be used to hearing and reading. It will take courage to start such an extreme walk, but once you get out there, nothing can beat the view. Extreme Walking is an advanced course in Bible reading. Through a series of topics that will shed new light on well-known passages in the canon, the reader is taken on an enriching voyage of discovery, where they will always remain just a step away from the safe, well-worn paths of understanding. Why does the Bible talk about ""heavens"" rather than ""heaven""? What kind of Messiah were the Jews really expecting? Who is this Melchizedek guy? Extreme Walking will help you tackle these questions and more. ""In a delightful series of walks through key New Testament themes--like heaven or Messiah or Satan--Tom de Bruin proves to be a highly informed and affable pathfinder. This book is a treasure because it offers, in a wonderful and whimsical way, insight into the New Testament by leading us back to the Jewish air the earliest Christians breathed. That air is never stuffy; it's fresh and funny and full of fascinating information--making this book perfect for any curious reader, Christian or not, who wants to know the truth about how Christianity came to be."" --Jack Levison, Chair of Old Testament Interpretation and Biblical Hebrew, Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University ""Tom de Bruin takes his readers on an adventurous 'walk' through a territory that is virtually unknown to most Bible readers. He is their guide for this exploration of the Judaic religious world that formed the background of the New Testament. In a creative, popularly written, and yet profound way, de Bruin helps the reader to get a better understanding of many aspects of the New Testament. Those who join him on this walk may at times wonder where the author is taking them, but at the end they will conclude that it has been a greatly enriching experience."" --Reinder Bruinsma, Lecturer and Author Tom de Bruin is Lecturer in New Testament Exegesis and Early Christian Literature at Newbold College of Higher Education (UK). He is the author of The Great Controversy: The Individual's Struggle between Good and Evil in the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs and in Their Jewish and Christian Contexts (2015).

Book No Depression in Heaven

  • Pages : 337 pages

Download or read book No Depression in Heaven written by Alison Collis Greene and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowhere was the transition from church-based aid to federal welfare state brought about by the Great Depression more dramatic than in the South. For a moment, the southern Protestant establishment turned to face the suffering that plantation capitalism pushed behind its image of planter's hatsand hoopskirts. When starving white farmers marched into an Arkansas town to demand food for their dying children and when priests turned away hungry widows and orphans because they were no needier than anyone else, southern clergy of both races spoke with one voice to say that they had done allthey could. It was time for a higher power to intervene. They looked to God, and then they looked to Roosevelt. When Roosevelt promised a new deal for the "forgotten man," Americans cheered, and when he took office, churches and private agencies gratefully turned much of the responsibility for welfare and social reform over to the state. Yet, argues historian Allison Collis Greene, Roosevelt's New Dealthreatened plantation capitalism even while bending to it. Black southern churches worked to secure benefits for their own communities while white churches divided over loyalties to Roosevelt and Jim Crow. Frustrated by their failure and fractured by divisions over the New Deal, leaders in the majorwhite Protestant denominations surrendered their moral authority in the South. Although the Protestant establishment retained a central role in American life for decades after the Depression, its slip from power made room for upstart Pentecostals and independent evangelicals, who emphasized personalrather than social salvation.
