Many multinational enterprises are now providing their expatriates with cross-cultural training (CCT), which many studies suggest is an effective way to improve expatriates’ intercultural competence and their work performance overseas. This study attempts to develop an optimal methodology for CCT in China, based on review of the literature and empirical data of five semi-structured interviews. A seven-step model is developed, and each step is examined for its effectiveness and applicability in a Chinese context. Ultimately, the final model is presented in the Research Summary, and its implications are discussed in detail.

In an attempt to explain culture more clearly, the "Iceberg Model of Culture" can be used2 since culture is often compared to an iceberg which has both visible (on the surface) and invisible (below the surface) parts. Visible elements of culture - the "percepta"- can be seen, such as food, clothing or laws. Those elements which are not as obvious -the "concepta" - such as norms, values or beliefs are represented by the much larger portion of the iceberg underwater. In a course of increasing cross-cultural business encounters, the question arouses whether it is necessary to be acquainted with both the visible and the greater invisible part of the culture concerned - i.e. to possess intercultural competence - in order to gain international business success. 1.2. Objectives With reference to Hofstede's Dimensions of National Culture, this seminar paper has the intention to verify the close correlation between intercultural competence and international business success. In this context, it makes an attempt to visualize the "invisible" part of culture by the example of China, which gains a steadily increasing importance for the world economic growth shown by its gross domestic product real growth rate of 8.7 % est. in 20096, thus attracting more and more companies from all over the world to establish business in China.

Book excerpt: Intercultural competence (IC) is considered as an essential soft skill for successful functioning in the globalized society in the 21st century. However, there is still a lack of culturally appropriate framework and instrument to understand and assess Chinese university students’ IC development. The purpose of this study was to design a valid and reliable scale for assessing Chinese students’ IC. Based on the AAA (Approach-Analyze-Act)-Chinese framework, a 30-item Intercultural Competence Scale-Chinese Version (ICS-CHN) was developed and validated with confirmatory factor analysis. Subsequent multigroup confirmatory factor analysis model further proved the measurement invariance of ICS-CHN in different gender groups. Together with its adequate reliability, convergent and discriminant validity, it is reasonable to conclude that ICS-CHN is a reliable and valid scale, corroborating that IC is a combination of affective/attitudinal, cognitive and behavioral skills and characteristics applied in intercultural encounters.
