Emmanuel Lartey stresses the importance of recognizing different cultural influences on individuals in order to effectively counsel, guide and empower them. He provides a clear and concise history of pastoral care and considers its relationship to different models of counseling and spirituality. Theological teachers and students will welcome its return as an indispensable introduction to the field of pastoral care. This book is also a useful resource for practitioners in a wider range of caring contexts who work in multicultural environments.

Book Where Are We Pastoral Environments and Care for Migrants

Download or read book Where Are We Pastoral Environments and Care for Migrants written by Daniel S. Schipani and published by . This book was released on 2017-09 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is published by the Society for Intercultural Pastoral Care & Counseling (SIPCC), Dusseldorf, Germany. It addresses key questions such as, what makes for competent pastoral care for, and with migrants?; how does pastoral care relate to social action for, and with migrants'. These are urgent questions in times when the flows of migration seem to grow even faster than the manifold controversies on migration. The issues are numerous, as they mirror the great diversity of causes, contexts, conflicts, political constellations, and attempts at conviviality. All those diverse factors shape the environments in which pastoral care and social action are undertaken and they condition the ways in which care and action can in turn shape the environments in which interactions between migrants and non-migrants take place. The collection of perspectives in this volume are the fruit of a seminar of the SIPCC in Gent, Belgium, in September of 2016, ¿Care and Counseling as Social Action. Inter-religious Cooperation in Urban Migration Contexts.¿ The participants represented many nationalities from five continents. They came as pastors, organizers, supervisors, teachers, religious leaders and academic researchers. They were Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist and Humanist. They reflected upon their contexts and in many cases on their own work. That means that the reflections offered in this text are born out of engagement with migrants, and/or experiences as migrants. Some provide stories. Some propose pastoral approaches. Some present research. They are made available in this volume in order to contribute to discussions on cultural and social perspectives on migrants and migration, and also to foster good pastoral and social care for and with migrants. The book has four main sections: Surveying the Landscapes of migration; Cultivating care for migrants; and Mediating spaces: Reflections on pastoral care with migrants; and a A selected and annotated bibliography.

Book Care Healing and Human Well Being within Interreligious Discourses

Download or read book Care Healing and Human Well Being within Interreligious Discourses written by Helmut Weiss and published by African Sun Media. This book was released on 2021-12-08 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Care, Healing, and Human Well-Being within Interreligious Discourses is an edited, peer reviewed volume of global perspectives on interreligious approaches to healing and well-being by 23 academics and practitioners from five different faith practices and 13 different cultures. With chapters by counsellors, chaplains, religious thinkers and linguists, the multifaceted nature of the volume provides an expansive approach to spiritual care and counselling. In order to understand the ways in which interreligious encounters can have an enriching effect on our humanity, the volume is divided into four sections that address: methodological questions surrounding spiritual caregiving, perspectives of different faith traditions on care and healing, the challenges to the praxis of care in diverse cultural and political settings and, finally, how spiritual care and healing can be carried out in public places such as the police, the military, and hospitals. The book is an outgrowth of 25 years of experience within the Society for Interreligious Care and Counselling (SIPCC) to promote better understanding and practices of intercultural and interreligious spiritual caregiving.

Book Spiritual Care in our Multifaith World

Download or read book Spiritual Care in our Multifaith World written by Daniel S. Schipani and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-07-16 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across the helping professions, and as a compassionate response to human suffering, spiritual care is a special process of companioning. Furthermore, all forms of spiritual care always consist in connecting diverse wisdom traditions with care receivers’ spiritual resources, longings, and struggles in socio-cultural and contextually pertinent ways. This book thoroughly explicates such understanding with interdisciplinary lenses. Its main purpose is to offer a comprehensive response to the new challenges and opportunities for excellent care presented by increasing cultural and religious-spiritual pluralization. Practical guidelines and case studies are connected with models of spirituality, spiritual toxicity and injury, communication strategies for engaging difference, patterns of caregiving work, and profiles of professional competence. In addition to offering an overarching orientation to the field, the contents of this book invite further reflection, dialogue, and collaboration among clinical pastoral education and psychospiritual therapy students and supervisors; chaplains, pastors and other religious caregivers; counselors; psychotherapists; and others interested in spiritual care in our multifaith world. It thus reflects the shared hope and, indeed, the expectation that spiritual care theory and practice across traditions and disciplines will continue to be enhanced in the days ahead.

Book Compassionate Intercultural Care Practices for Coping with Grief

Download or read book Compassionate Intercultural Care Practices for Coping with Grief written by James Japheth Sudarshan Harrichand and published by Langham Publishing. This book was released on 2024-03-31 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As humans, we all express our grief differently. Acknowledging this truth, Dr. James Harrichand examines Old Testament accounts of grief and mourning alongside the experiences of marginalized Guyanese and Vietnamese immigrant communities in Canada. He explores both biblical and pastoral theology through an anthropological lens, bridging the horizons of Scripture and culture in a hermeneutically and pastorally sensitive manner. Dr. Harrichand’s focus on prosaic prayers in the Old Testament fills a significant gap in the scholarship, but this book is also significant for its immense practicality, sensitizing readers to grief’s varied expressions and equipping culturally intelligent pastoral caregivers. He presents five compassionate intercultural care practices for coping with grief, grounding each in the living hope of the redemptive work of Jesus Christ, the one who bore our griefs and carries our sorrows.

Pastoral Theology and Care: Critical Trajectories in Theory and Practice offers a collection of essays by leading pastoral theologians that represent emerging trajectories in the fields of pastoral theology and care. The topics explored include: qualitative research and ethnography, advances in neuroscience, care across pluralities and intersections in religion and spiritualties, the influence of neoliberal economics in socio-economic vulnerabilities, postcolonial theory and its implications, the intersections of race and religion in caring for black women, and the usefulness of intersectionality for pastoral practice. Book excerpt: Weaving together insights from social psychology, theology, and experiences of interfaith religious leaders, Dagmar Grefe develops practical strategies that support interreligious contact at a grassroots level. She develops tools that equip religious leaders with the interreligious competence needed for spiritual care and counseling with individual persons in crisis. Cooperation is not only effective in the care for communities and persons in crisis, it also heals distant and strained interreligious relationships. In the process of working together, perceptions of each other can transform.

Book The Practice of Pastoral Care

Download or read book The Practice of Pastoral Care written by Carrie Doehring and published by Presbyterian Publishing Corp. This book was released on 2014-12-05 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Practice of Pastoral Care has become a popular seminary textbook for courses in pastoral care and a manual for clinical pastoral education. In it, Doehring encourages counselors to view their ministry through a trifocal lens that incorporates premodern, modern, and postmodern approaches to religious and psychological knowledge. Doehring describes the basic ingredients of a caregiving relationship, shows how to use the caregiver's life experience as a source of authority, and demonstrates how to develop the skill of listening and establishing the actual relationship. This new edition elaborates on and expands the author's previous work, adding an intercultural perspective that gives more attention to religious pluralism in the pastoral care setting. It offers a road map for using a step-by-step narrative, relational, embodied approach to spiritual care that respects the unique ways people live out their values and beliefs, especially in coping with stress, loss, and violence. Readers will be able to confidently and professionally offer pastoral care and counseling to members of their congregations or other places of ministry.

Book Pastoral Identity as Social Construction

Download or read book Pastoral Identity as Social Construction written by Samuel Park and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do chaplains and counselors form their identities as "pastoral" caregivers in challenging clinical contexts such as institutional, interdisciplinary, postmodern, inter-cultural, and multi-faith work environments? This book is a product of the fifteen-year-long journey towards answering a well-known but hardly answered question about pastoral identity. Based on narratives of many pastoral practitioners who work in hospitals or counseling settings, the author puzzles through ways for helping professionals to form their identities in bewildering work environments. Previous studies on pastoral identity have focused on an individual interiority of pastoral practitioners and have emphasized mainly the caregivers' perceptions and practices from a developmental and training perspective. Grounded in an empirical study of active pastoral care providers, this book presents pastoral identity as a relational and interactional property, socially constructed among pastoral care partners, culture, and God. Findings of the empirical study support contemporary theological and social psychological discourses: identity is embedded in and embodied by relationships. This book will guide you through confusions, worries, insights, and woes you have experienced while helping others in order to envision yourself more clearly as a spiritually-embodied and pastorally-tending caregiver. You will find yourself to be more who you are and engage more with others as they become who they are.

Book The Practice of Pastoral Care

Download or read book The Practice of Pastoral Care written by Carrie Doehring and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on psychological, theological, and cultural studies on suffering, Carrie Doehring encourages counselors to view their ministry through trifocal lenses and include approaches that are premodern (apprehending God through religious rituals), modern (consulting rational and empirical sources), and postmodern (acknowledging the contextual nature of knowledge). Utilizing strategies from all three perspectives, Doehring describes the basic ingredients of a caregiving relationship, shows how to use the caregiver's life experience as a source of authority, and demonstrates how to develop the skill of listening and establish the actual relationship. She then explains the steps of psychological assessment, systemic assessment, and theological reflection, and finally she delineates the basic steps for plans of care: attending to the careseeker's safety, building trust, mourning losses, and reconnecting with the ordinariness of life.

Book Celebrating the Past Present and Future of British and Irish Practical Theology

Download or read book Celebrating the Past Present and Future of British and Irish Practical Theology written by Andrew P. Rogers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-13 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practical theology has become a well-established academic discipline in Britain and Ireland over the past half century, evidenced in its chairs, journals, books, conferences, and contribution to transformed practices. The British and Irish Association for Practical Theology (BIAPT) and its journal, Practical Theology, has had a significant role to play in the story of the discipline. This volume is a celebration of practical theology in Britain and Ireland in all its inventiveness and variety on the occasion of BIAPT’s twenty-fifth birthday. It offers an account of its roots in its emergence from the Scottish Pastoral Association in the 1960s, its trajectories established in the journal Contact/Practical Theology and how human experience has been a constant companion on the journey. The book considers a range of methodologies including engagement with popular culture, public theology, the arts, and the importance of conversation. It explores new shoots in the discipline that consider how sexuality, ethnicity, and different religious traditions may be addressed within practical theology. It concludes by asking how it may be fruitful in the future, by reflecting on the challenges ahead, not least the ubiquity of ignorance. This is a landmark text in the unfolding of British and Irish practical theology in all its glorious distinctiveness, which promises to be a major contribution to international debate in the discipline. The chapters in this book were first published in Practical Theology.
