Download or read book The Mathematics of Models for Climatology and Environment written by Jesus I. Diaz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the culmination of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on The Mathematics of Models for Climatology and Environment which was held at Puerto de la Cruz ,Tenerife, Spain during 11-21 January 1995. One of the main goals of the ASI was to establish a bridge between mathematical modellers on the one hand and physical oceanographers and climatologists on the other. The book is divided into fourth parts containing a total of 16 chapters: Parts I, II and III are devoted to general models and Part IV to models related to some local problems. Most of the mathematical models here considered involve systems of nonlinear partial differential equations. The mathemat ical treatment cover a large list of subjects: existence and uniqueness for well-possed problems, large time behaviour, stability, bifurcation, diagrams of equilibria, conditions for the occurrence of interfaces or free boundaries, numerical algorithms and its implementation, controllability of the problems, etc. I thank Jacques- Louis Lions and Cornelius Johannes van Duijn for their guidance and collaboration as co-directors of the AS!. I also thank J.F.Padial and G. Diaz for their help in the planning and conduct of the ASI as well as in the preparation of this book.

Download or read book Quaternary Environmental Change in the Tropics written by Sarah E. Metcalfe and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-08-24 with total page 826 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global climate changes that led to the expansion and contraction of high latitude ice sheets during the Quaternary period were associated with equally dramatic changes in tropical environments. These included shifts in vegetation zones, changes in the hydrology and ecology of lakes and rivers, and fluctuations in the size of mountain glaciers and sandy deserts. Until recently it was thought that such changes were triggered by fluctuations in the distribution of polar ice cover. Now there is increasing recognition that the tropics themselves have acted as drivers of global climate change over a range of timescales. The aim of Quaternary Environmental Change in the Tropics is to provide a synthesis of the changes that occurred in tropical terrestrial and marine systems during the Pleistocene and Holocene, complementing data-derived reconstructions with output from state-of-the-art climate models. It is targeted at final-year undergraduate students and research specialists, but will provide an introduction to tropical Quaternary research for a variety of other readers.

Download or read book Modelling Ocean Climate Variability written by Artem S. Sarkisyan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-05-13 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this wide-ranging and comprehensive review of the historical development and current status of ocean circulation models, the analysis extends from simple analytical approaches to the latest high-resolution numerical models with data assimilation. The authors, both of whom are pioneer scientists in ocean and shelf sea modelling, look back at the evolution of Western and Eastern modelling methodologies during the second half of the last century. They also present the very latest information on ocean climate modelling and offer examples for a number of oceans and shelf seas. The book includes a critical analysis of literature on ocean climate variability modelling, as well as assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the best-known modelling techniques. It also anticipates future developments in the field, focusing on models based on a synthesis of numerical simulation and field observation, and on nonlinear thermodynamic model data synthesis.

Download or read book Stochastic Modelling in Physical Oceanography written by Robert Adler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the ocean is almost as old as the history of mankind itself. When the first seafarers set out in their primitive ships they had to understand, as best they could, tides and currents, eddies and vortices, for lack of understanding often led to loss of live. These primitive oceanographers were, of course, primarily statisticians. They collected what empirical data they could, and passed it down, ini tially by word of mouth, to their descendants. Data collection continued throughout the millenia, and although data bases became larger, more re liable, and better codified, it was not really until surprisingly recently that mankind began to try to understand the physics behind these data, and, shortly afterwards, to attempt to model it. The basic modelling tool of physical oceanography is, today, the partial differential equation. Somehow, we all 'know" that if only we could find the right set of equations, with the right initial and boundary conditions, then we could solve the mysteries of ocean dynamics once and for all.
