Book excerpt: The arms race, the definition of amateurism, Title IX, commercialism and academic integrity are regularly titles of chapters or catch phrases of texts written about intercollegiate athletics. Community college research focuses on the student population, transfer issues and the role of 2-year colleges within higher education. This study focuses on the intersection. Junior college athletic programs have been operating for nearly a century and currently serve more than 70,000 college students throughout the country without the guidance of appropriate research. Five research questions are divided into two subgroups; the first focusing on the history of participation through affiliation with the NJCAA and the next four on current trends in the presence, size and specific sport opportunities in community colleges. Data on the history of participation was collected directly from NJCAA national offices and imported into spreadsheets, providing a substantial amount of raw data previously unavailable. The second subset of questions utilized merged data sets from IPEDS and EADA. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the historic data. Logisitic and OLS regression techniques provided results for the presence, size and specific sport analyses. The decline of men's opportunities in NJCAA institutions provides evidence that women's growth made possible through Title IX, occurred at the expense of men. The economic status of colleges provided a better indicator of growth or decline for either gender in junior college athletic programs after the initial thrust of women's teams ended. Enrollment, the percentage of full time students and the rural variable all proved to be positively associated with the presence of and size of athletic programs, while the female share of the student population was negatively associated with presence and size. The results provide information for local administrators of athletic departments, college administration, state governance groups and national associations. Financial constraints and concerns of supporting athletics at the community college level can be expanded. Gender equity issues should be explored in more detail. A foundation has been established, needs to be reinforced and should provide a launching point for future research in junior college athletics.

Gaining insight into the variety of opportunities for student personal development as a result of participation in intercollegiate athletics and extracurricular activities during college is explored by this study. Quality student engagement activities and understanding the reasons for engagement contributing to personal development continues to be valuable information in development of student on campus programming at colleges and universities. This qualitative study takes a phenomenological approach to describe the experiences of students involved in intercollegiate athletics competition at a small rural serving community college in the Midwest. Through a series of semi-structured interviews of at least (n = 14), students tell their stories of personal development and the contributions that intercollegiate athletics made to their out-of-class experiences. Findings of this study indicate that the participants valued their experiences in participating in intercollegiate athletics, reporting the development of personal pride and a greater sense of self-identity. For the participants in this study, intercollegiate athletics provided an opportunity for increased student engagement and thus contributed to the overall campus environment.

Book excerpt: Colleges and universities are complex entities, and athletic departments are among the most difficult components to manage (Duderstadt, 2000). The relationship between athletics and academics is marked by a "myriad of contradictions" (Zimbalist, 1999, p. 5). Intercollegiate athletics can not only provide institutions with positive benefits but can also detract from schools' educational missions. Hannah and Beyer (2000) believe this conflict is best understood as a consequence of the unique cultural role of intercollegiate athletics. Therefore, this study's purpose was to qualitatively examine one small college athletic program using the organizational culture perspective. Data was collected through interviews with leaders, observations of cultural events, and document analysis. Theorizing, an analytical method developed by Goetz & LeCompte (1983), was used to analyze the data. Findings indicated that Pacific Christian's intercollegiate athletic program reflected tensions created by a transformation in the college's overall culture. The college's culture had centered on its Christian mission, but environmental factors have forced the college to reorient its culture around the need to become academically elite. Athletics contributed to this transformation by marketing the school, enhancing the college's image, improving fundraising, and facilitating community relations. However, the quest for an improved academic reputation also created tensions within the athletic department. The increasing selectivity of the college and financial concerns related to this shift threatened the athletic teams' ability to remain successful and weakened its link to the college culture. Nevertheless, the study concluded that strong leadership from administrators and coaches was the key to keeping athletics culturally relevant. To integrate the two cultures, leaders used extensive communication and relied on subcultural hybrids. Leaders also embodied new cultural assumptions by paying attention to the athletic department, role modeling assumptions about athletics, and designating specific personnel criteria. In addition, the integration and embodiment mechanisms were both facilitated by the organizational design and structure of Pacific Christian. Practitioners can draw on these conclusions to better manage the relationship between athletics and academics at other institutions. Furthermore, the insight provided by the organizational culture perspective should continue to inform research on intercollegiate athletics.
