Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We desire to render scenes onto 3D displays for realtime applications based on image data, targeting media such as streaming multi-view video. The conventional method for rendering would be to first perform 3D reconstruction of the image data, then render the 3D geometric and texture data. However, this approach would be too slow and would lack robustness for complex scenes. Instead, we take an image based approach by using appropriate filtering. Our approach interpolates limited light field data of a 3D scene to simulate depth of field, so that we are able to render new stereo pair views from camera array data in realtime. This allows users to roam in front of a 3D display and still experience seamless natural viewing. We produce these images by convolving 2D image data with an elliptical Gaussian. By shearing the line-like Gaussian to minimize variance over an area-of-interest, the application determines the depth of a user designated pixel. This lets users change focus in realtime, so that their vision does not feel inhibited by the shallower focal depth. Instead, they are able to better focus on the details of their current interest. Our method can be combined with eye trackers and video data for minimally invasive surgery, video conferencing, or any other remote controlled interactive visual applications for enhanced realistic viewing experience.

The first category is nonphotorealistic 3D approaches based on conventional optical cameras to implement 3D stereoscopic observation of a scene. In the context of nonphotorealistic 3D imaging and reconstruction systems, the authors introduce general principles and also demonstrate camera calibration for 3D imaging, smart cameras, and full-link imaging methods using the optical modulation transfer function to improve imaging quality in conventional cameras. The second category is based on light-ray light field technology to achieve photorealistic 3D imaging and displays. In the context of light-ray light field systems, two approaches capable of light-ray light field 3D imaging by utilizing a camera array or a lens array are demonstrated. Accordingly, light-ray light field display approaches comprising head-mounted displays and integral displays are also introduced. The third category is also photorealistic 3D imaging and display technology, which is based on holography (i.e., diffraction or wavefront light field). Virtual Storytelling 2003 was held on November 20–21, 2003, in Toulouse (France) in the Modern and Contemporary Art Museum “Les Abattoirs.” One hundred people from 17 different countries attended the conference composed of 3 invited lectures, 16 scientific talks and 11 posters/demonstrations. Since autumn 2003, there has been strong collaboration between the two major virtual/digital storytelling conference series in Europe: Virtual Storytelling and TIDSE (Technologies for Interactive Digital Storytelling and Entertainment). Thus the conference chairs of TIDSE and Virtual Storytelling decided to establish a 2 year turnover for both conferences and to join the respective organizers in the committees. For the third edition of Virtual Storytelling, the Organization Committee chose to extend the conference to 3 days so that more research work and applications could be be presented, to renew the Scientific and Application Board, to open the conference to new research or artistic communities, and to call for the submission of full papers and no longer only abstracts so as to make a higher-level selection.
