Book excerpt: Thrips (fhysanoptera) are very small insects, widespread throughout the world with a preponderance of tropical species, many temperate ones, and even a few living in arctic regions. Of the approximately 5,000 species so far identified, only a few hundred are crop pests, causing serious damage or transmitting diseases to growing crops and harvestable produce in most countries. Their fringed wings confer a natural ability to disperse widely, blown by the wind. Their minute size and cryptic behavior make them difficult to detect either in the field or in fresh vegetation transported during international trade of vegetables, fruit and ornamental flowers. Many species have now spread from their original natural habitats and hosts to favorable new environments where they often reproduce rapidly to develop intense damaging infestations that are costly to control. Over the past decade there have been several spectacular examples of this. The western flower thrips has expanded its range from the North American continent to Europe, Australia and South Africa. Thrips palmi has spread from its presumed origin, the island of Sumatra, to the coast of Florida, and threatens to extend its distribution throughout North and South America. Pear thrips, a known orchard pest of Europe and the western United States and Canada has recently become a major defoliator of hardwood trees in Vermont and the neighboring states. Local outbreaks of other species are also becoming problems in field and glasshouse crops as the effectiveness of insecticides against them decline.

Book excerpt: "The objectives of this thesis were to review the existing literature on predatory soil mites and alternative food sources in biocontrol systems, identify a suitable natural predator for controlling invasive thrips species Echinothrips americanus and Thrips parvispinus, and investigate the role of increased soil biodiversity in shaping plant phenology traits.The thesis starts with an overview of below-ground biocontrol systems using predatory soil mites to manage pests in the soil with the aim to consolidate existing studies, emphasizing the potential of these natural enemies which have had limited research in this area. Since the focus of the thesis is biological control, I next focused on the role of alternative food for natural enemies and its effects on predator and pest populations. Using a meta-analysis approach, I revealed that introducing natural enemies before pests and providing alternative food can enhance long-term biocontrol effectiveness.Moving towards the experimental chapters of the thesis, I started by testing predatory mites to control thrips on various plants and showed promising results for controlling T. parvispinus with certain predatory soil mites. Since biocontrol of E. americanus was not successful, I explored thrips' antipredator behaviours, which might hinder predator success. Echinothrips americanus displayed these behaviours most frequently of all the thrips investigated, making it challenging for predatory mites to prey on them. Lastly, I investigated the effects of increased soil biodiversity on plant performance, showing improved plant performance under suboptimal fertilization conditions when adding the predatory soil mite S. scimitus and its associated soil biota."--

Plants and insects are highly diverse groups due to their ability to exploit a wide range of niches, from the desert to the arctic zone and also almost all the plant species growing on the planet. Plants and insects make up together approximately half of all known species of multicellular organisms. Each plant interacts with insects in a different manner; insects may act as protection, dispersers, or fertilizers for plants while plants may be a food/energy resource or nest location for insects. In an environment with changing availability and quality of host plants, phytophagous insects are under selection pressure to find quality hosts. They need to maximize their fitness by locating suitable plants and avoiding unsuitable ones. Thus, they have evolved a finely tuned sensory system, for detection of host cues, and a nervous system, capable of integrating inputs from sensory neurons with a high level of spatio-temporal resolution. Insect responses to cues are not fixed but depend on the context in which they are perceived, the physiological state of the insect, and prior learning experiences. However, there are examples of insects making 'mistakes' and being attracted to poor quality hosts. While insects have evolved ways of finding hosts, plants have been under selection pressure to do precisely the opposite and evade detection or defend themselves when attacked. Once on the plant, insect-associated molecules may trigger or suppress defence depending on whether the plant or the insect is ahead in evolutionary terms. Plant volatile emission is influenced by defence responses induced by insect feeding or oviposition which can attract natural enemies but repel herbivores. Conversely, plant reproductive fitness is increased by attraction of pollinators. Interactions can be altered by other organisms associated with the plant such as other insects, plant pathogens, or mycorrhizal fungi. Plant phenotype is plastic and can be changed by epigenetic factors in adaptation to periods of biotic stress. Space and time play crucial roles in influencing the outcome of interactions between insects and plants. This book has been designed to suit the knowledge and pursuit of the researcher and scholars and to empower them with various aspects of plant-pest interactions, so that they are updated with the information.
