Book Interactions of Energetic Particles and Clusters with Solids

Download or read book Interactions of Energetic Particles and Clusters with Solids written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ion beams are being applied for surface modifications of materials in a variety of different ways: ion implantation, ion beam mixing, sputtering, and particle or cluster beam-assisted deposition. Fundamental to all of these processes is the deposition of a large amount of energy, generally some keV's, in a localized area. This can lead to the production of defects, atomic mixing, disordering and in some cases, amorphization. Recent results of molecular dynamics computer simulations of energetic displacement cascades in Cu and Ni with energies up to 5 keV suggest that thermal spikes play an important role in these processes. Specifically, it will be shown that many aspects of defect production, atomic mixing and cascade collapse'' can be understood as a consequence of local melting of the cascade core. Included in this discussion will be the possible role of electron-phonon coupling in thermal spike dynamics. The interaction of energetic clusters of atoms with solid surfaces has also been studied by molecular dynamics simulations. this process is of interest because a large amount of energy can be deposited in a small region and possibly without creating point defects in the substrate or implanting cluster atoms. The simulations reveal that the dynamics of the collision process are strongly dependent on cluster size and energy. Different regimes where defect production, local melting and plastic flow dominate will be discussed. 43 refs., 7 figs.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 699 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early in 1989, while most of us were gathered in the Mediterranean five-centuries-old city of Alacant, the idea of a school on stopping and particle penetration phenomena came to our minds. Later that year when discussing this plan with some of the participants in the 13th International Conference on Atomic Collisions in Solids in Aarhus, we were pleased to note that the proposal was warmly welcomed indeed by the community. An Advanced Study Institute on this or a related subject had not been organized in the last decade. Because of the progress made particularly in the interaction of high energy beams with matter, and the many applications which the general subject of the stopping of charged particles (ions and electrons) in matter enjoys, a Study Institute appeared a worthy enterprise. Even though several international conference series cover developments in these areas, they miss tutorial introductions to the field. The title chosen was Interaction of Charged Particles with Solids and Surfaces, and the objectives were stated as follows: "to cover theory and experiments, including selected applications and hot topics, of the stopping of charged particles (ions and electrons) in matter. The emphasis will be on outlining the areas where further effort is needed, and on specifying the basic needs in applications. Fundamental concepts will prevail over applications, and the character of the Institute as a school will be stressed. " The school was directed by Fernando Flores (Spain), Herbert M. Urbassek (Germany), Nestor R.

This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an increasing demand for techniques that are able to provide high resolution molecular imaging of biological materials. Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) is one technique that has been focused on in order to achieve the above. Traditionally, SIMS has predominantly made use of atomic projectiles for this bombardment process - Atomic SIMS. However, a bit over two decades ago, a breakthrough in SIMS occurred with the advent of cluster projectiles - Cluster SIMS. This has generated deep interest for studying the nature of cluster-surface interactions. Ion-surface interactions have constantly had access to simulation programs with predictive capability. For cluster-surface interactions however, there is no such software available (yet). Some existing techniques are too slow for making predictions. Thus, the purpose of this thesis was to develop a model that was able to help in predicting SIMS relevant information for these cluster-surface interactions. The model used in the thesis is based on a simplistic energy spread approach that behaves according to a diffusional process. With the help of MD simulations, it is shown that the above approach can be a valid method for consolidating prediction capabilities for cluster-surface interactions. It has been shown that by dumping energy into the target and allowing this energy to spread, the dimension of the crater that is formed from a cluster impact can be emulated. In addition, the amount of material removed from the solid can also be matched. It was found that the following are key initial criteria that have to be met for the deposited energy. The angular distribution of the initially energetic particles is needed to be randomly and spherically distributed. The energy density (or temperature) is not required to be very sensitive although above a certain threshold. The energy requires to be deposited in such as way that its spread in the vertical direction is twice that in the lateral dimensions.

Book Modern Many particle Physics Atomic Gases Quantum Dots And Quantum Fluids

Download or read book Modern Many particle Physics Atomic Gases Quantum Dots And Quantum Fluids written by Enrico Lipparini and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2003-09-26 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important part of this book is devoted to the description of homogenous systems, such as electron gas in different dimensions, the quantum well in an intense magnetic field, liquid helium and nuclear matter. However, the most relevant part is dedicated to the study of finite systems: metallic clusters, quantum dots, the condensate of cold and diluted atoms in magnetic traps, helium drops and nuclei. The book focuses on methods of getting good numerical approximations to energies and linear response based on approximations to first-principles Hamiltonians. These methods are illustrated and applied to Bose and Fermi systems at zero and finite temperature.Modern Many-Particle Physics is directed towards students who have taken a conventional course in quantum mechanics and possess a basic understanding of condensed matter phenomena.

This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Friday, February 20, 1980, I had the pleasure to be present at the inaugural lecture of my colleague Jan Reedijk, who had just been named at the Chair of Inorganic Chemistry of Leiden University. According to tradition, the ceremony took place in the impressive Hall of the old University Academy Building. In the course of his lecture, Jan mentioned a number of recent developments in chemistry which had struck him as particularly important or interesting. Among those was the synthesis of large metal cluster compounds, and, to my luck, he showed a slide ofthe molecular structure of [PtI9(C)b]4-. (To my luck, since at traditional Leiden University it is quite unusual to show slides at such ceremonies.) This constituted my first acquaintance with this exciting new class of materials. I became immediately fascinated by this molecule, partly because of the esthetic beauty of its fivefold symmetry, partly because as a physicist it struck me that it could be visualized as an "embryonically small" metal particle, embedded in a shell of CO ligands.
