Book Interactions of Coherent Optical Radiation with Solids

Download or read book Interactions of Coherent Optical Radiation with Solids written by R. Braunstein and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of double-photon absorption, harmonic generation in semiconductors, and the frequency tuning of injection lasers by uniaxial stress are reported. Observations have been made of the two-photon excitation of an electron from the valence to the conduction band in CdS. The radiative recombination emission from exciton and impurity levels subsequent to the simultaneous absorption of two quanta was observed as a function of laser intensity and compared to the emission excited by single-quanta absorption for photons. The frequency of a GaAs laser can be readily tuned by the application of uniaxial stress. Analysis of the frequency changes with stress of diodes prepared in different fashions indicates that different emission processes may be taking place. (Author).

Book Optical Interactions In Solids 2nd Edition

Download or read book Optical Interactions In Solids 2nd Edition written by Di Bartolo Baldassare and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2010-06-30 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical Interactions in Solids presents an extensive and unified treatment of the basic principles of the optical properties of solids. It provides a theoretical background to workers in the field of laser physics and absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy of solid state materials. The book is a comprehensive coverage of the subject and is systematically and didactically organized. The level of presentation is such that it will benefit and interest both advanced students and research workers. Group theory — which is useful throughout — is introduced early in the book advocating the scientific community to overcome the reluctance to employ this powerful method. Consistent emphasis is given throughout the book to the relevance of symmetry and to detailed calculations. Different subjects as various as quantum theory of radiation field, thermal vibrations of molecules and crystals and covalent bonding are brought together in a unified treatment which requires knowledge of all these topics and this points to the interpretation of the spectral properties of solids. The content of this work could be used as a two term graduate course in solid state spectroscopy.br>

Book Coherent Cooperative Radiation in Solids

Download or read book Coherent Cooperative Radiation in Solids written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Avalanche upconversion dynamics and associated nonlinear optical response was also reported for the first time in Tm:YALO crystals at room temperature. The avalanche mechanism involves a cooperative down conversion (cross relaxation) step and is a promising method of pumping rare earth lasers at entirely new (diode compatible) wavelengths, corresponding to excited state absorptions rather than ground state absorptions. Quantum theory describing the threshold for photo-darkening and the role of energy migration in avalanches was developed, and semi quantitative agreement obtained with preliminary measurements of nonlinear susceptibilities. Cooperative dynamics in general, and avalanche dynamics in particular, were shown to furnish a promising new mechanism not only for solid state lasers but for nonlinear optical interactions as well, opening the door to practical signal processing and switching applications exploiting the low intensity thresholds of avalanche processes.

Book Optical Properties of Excited States in Solids

Download or read book Optical Properties of Excited States in Solids written by Baldassare di Bartolo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 749 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an account of the course "Optical Properties of Excited States in Solids" held in Erice, Italy, from June 16 to 3D, 1991. This meeting was organized by the International School of Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy of the "Ettore Majorana" Centre for Scientific Culture. The purpose of this course was to present physical models, mathematical formalisms and experimental techniques relevant to the optical properties of excited states in solids. Some active physical species, such as ions or radicals, could survive indefinitely if they were completely 'isolated in space. Other active species, such as excited molecular and solid-state systems, are inherently unstable, even in isolation, due to the spontaneous mechanisms that may convert their excitation energies into radiation or heat. Physical parameters that may be used to characterize these excited systems are the localization or delocalization, and the coherence or incoherence, of their state excitations. In solids the excited states, whether they are localized (as for impurities in insulators) or delocalized (as they may occur in semiconductors), are relevant in several regards. Their de-excitation is extremely sensitive to the nature of the excitations of the systems, and a study of the de-excitation processes can yield a variety of information. For example, the excited states may represent the initial condition of the onset of such processes as Stokes-shifted emission, hot luminescence, symmetry-dependent Jahn-Teller and scattering processes, tunneling processes, energy transfer to like and unlike centers, superradiance, coherent radiation, and excited state absorption.

Book Interaction of Coherent Light with Solids and with Turbulent Atmospheres

Download or read book Interaction of Coherent Light with Solids and with Turbulent Atmospheres written by W. P Brown (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considerable progress was made on the development of an improved theory and physical model of propagation in turbulent media. Topics studied include (1) the effective refractive index of random media; (2) the statistics of waves propagated in random media; (3) the dyadic Green's functions for vector waves propagated in random media; (4) and extension and generalization of earlier results on the validity of the Rytov approximation; and (5) a geometrical-diffraction theory of optical propagation in random media. As a second and distinct part of the research program, the nonlinear absorption of high intensity radiation was studied. A number of compounds with potential as Q-switch materials were investigated, and a rather complete picture of the mechanism responsible for their behavior has been developed. In addition, the photoisomerization of indigo dyes by giant pulse radiation has been investigated. This work yielded the first direct observation of a short-lived intermediate of a photoisomerization process. (Author).

Download or read book Light Matter Interaction written by John Weiner and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-07-11 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thorough introduction to atomic, molecular, and optical (AMO) science and engineering Atomic, molecular, and optical (AMO) science and engineering stands at the confluence of strong scientific and technological currents in physics, chemistry, and electrical engineering. It seeks ways to expand our ability to use light for many purposes: to observe and manipulate matter at the atomic scale, to use nanostructures to manipulate light at the subwavelength scale, to develop quantum devices, and to control internal molecular motion and modify chemical reactivity with light. The two-volume Light-Matter Interaction draws together the principal ideas that form the basis of AMO science and engineering. Volume 1: Fundamentals and Applications fills many gaps left by standard courses and texts in chemical physics and electrical engineering to supply the basis of what the AMO scientist or engineer needs to build a solid foundation of understanding in the field. Organized to serve as both textbook and reliable desk reference to a diverse audience ranging from student and novice to advanced practitioner, this book discusses both the fundamentals and common applications, including: * Classical absorption and emission of radiation * Quantum dipole coupling to the two-level system * The optical Bloch equations * Quantized fields and dressed states * Optical forces and cooling from atom-light interaction * The laser in theory and practice * Geometrical and wave optics: theory and applications * The Gaussian beam and optical resonators
