Ce langage, appelé Langage Adressé à l’Enfant (LAE), présente des caractéristiques spécifiques. Tous les aspects linguistiques sont concernés : lexique, morpho-syntaxe, pragmatique et prosodie. Le LAE, et particulièrement celui de la mère, favorise le développement langagier de l’enfant. Le LAE est-il différent lorsque l’enfant est dysphasique ? Les mères d’enfants dysphasiques réalisent-elles des adaptations ? Les études à ce sujet sont contradictoires. Notre recherche s’intéresse au langage adressé à l’enfant dysphasique ainsi qu’aux stratégies d’étayage linguistique dont il bénéficie. Nous avons comparé dix dyades mère-enfant dysphasique avec dix dyades mère-enfant tout-venant, en les appariant sur l’âge et le sexe de l’enfant. Nous les avons enregistrées dans deux situations d’interaction : une tâche de récit d’album sans texte et une tâche de jeu libre. Deux types d’analyses ont été réalisés : analyse linguistique et analyse des stratégies d’étayage. Les résultats indiquent des différences dans le langage adressé à l’enfant dysphasique : le lexique est moins diversifié et les mères occupent davantage le dialogue. En revanche l’analyse syntaxique n’a pas mis en évidence de différence significative entre les deux groupes. Enfin, l’analyse des stratégies d’étayage est quantitativement différente : les mères d’enfants dysphasiques produisent plus de reformulations et de demandes en confirmation. The Oral Speech Mechanism Screening Examination (OSMSE) is designed primarily for use by clinical speech-language pathologists. The examination could also serve, however, as a useful tool for oral myofunctional therapists, as well as physical therapists, dentists, and orthodontists interested specifically in speech. It is reliable, relatively easy and quick to administer, and appropriate for children and adults in either diagnostic or therapy settings. The OSMSE is intended to assess those anatomical structures and physiological functions that are most often considered to be potentially related to speech or language disorders. Structural and/or functional judgments included are organized on the OSMSE test form under categories of: lips, tongue, jaw, teeth, hard palate, soft palate, pharynx, breathing, and diadochokinesis. Results of a preliminary study with normal speaking subjects indicated that the OSMSE had satisfactory intra- and inter-examiner reliability after minimal training. The time required to administer the examination typically ranged from 5 to 10 minutes. (Author/GK)

Indeed, one child out of 20 experiences one or more seizures before the age of 5, and one in a hundred develops epilepsy as a chronic disorder. Approximately half of these children with epilepsy display academic difficulties and/or behavioral disorders. Moreoever, it is now believed that a sizable proportion of children with learning disability suffer from undiagnosed epilepsy. While a great number of textbooks have been devoted to various medical aspects of chi- hood epilepsy (diagnosis, genetics, etiology, drug and surgical treatment, etc.), there have been no comprehensive accounts of the cognitive consequences of this condition. Advance of medical knowledge has shown that childhood epilepsy should not be considered as a single disorder but encompasses a whole range of different conditions that exhibit specific clinical EEG and outcome characteristics. It is not becoming apparent that these various clinical entities have different cognitive expression that yet need to be specified. The purpose of this book is to provide a complete up-to-date analysis of this multi-faceted pathology.
