Book excerpt: La présence de macles à l'intérieur des grains a un effet surprenant sur les propriétés plastiques de cristaux de cuivre. Ces structures cristallographiques séparées du grain par deux interfaces miroir, semblent limiter la propagation des dislocations. Le travail présenté ici, a pour but l'étude des interactions dislocations-macle grâce à la modélisation moléculaire et la microscopie électronique in-situ. La première technique a permis de mettre en évidence différents mécanismes d'interaction à OK, fonction du caractère des dislocations ; on a évalué la sensibilité de ces mécanismes aux modes de réalisations des simulations. La seconde technique a permis l'observation dynamique de phénomènes d'interactions entre des dislocations et des macles ; on a révélé la présence d'un phénomène inhabituel de déformation, le maclage. On a rapproché les résultats obtenus par les deux méthodes et conclut à un fort effet de barrière de la part des interfaces de macle sur le mouvement de dislocations.

This book is comprised of 17 chapters and opens with an overview of the general concept of mean-field magnetohydrodynamics, followed by a discussion on the back-reaction of the magnetic field on motion; the structure of the turbulent electromotive force; homogeneous and two-scale turbulence; turbulent electromotive force in the case of rotational mean motion; and the dynamo problem of magnetohydrodynamics. The dynamo theory, which is based on mean-field magnetohydrodynamics, is explained and its applications to cosmical objects are described. The remaining chapters explore toroidal and poloidal vector fields; a simple model of an a-effect dynamo; and spherical models of turbulent dynamos as suggested by cosmical bodies. Book excerpt: The Institute for Amorphous Studies was founded in 1982 as the international center for the investigation of amorphous mate rials. It has since played an important role in promoting the und er standing of disordered matter in general. An Institute lecture series on "Fundamentals of Amorphous Materials and Devices" was held during 1982-83 with distinguished speakers from universities and industry. These events were free and open to the public ,and were attended by many representatives of the scientific community. The lectures themselves were highly successful inasmuch as they provided not only formal instruction but also an opportunity for vigorous and stimulating debate. That last element could not be captured within the pages of a book I but the lectures concentrated on the latest advances in the field I which is why their essential contents are he re reproduced in collective form. Together they constitute an interdisciplinary status report of the field. The speakers brought many different viewpoints and a variety of back ground experiences io bear on the problems involved I but though language and conventions vary I the essential unity of the concerns is very clear I as indeed are the ultimate benefits of the many-sided approach.
