Download or read book Fish Antifreeze Proteins written by Kathryn Vanya Ewart and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2002 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Antifreeze proteins enable organisms to avoid freezing under extreme conditions. The greatest diversity of known antifreeze proteins is in teleost fish and much work has gone into the understanding of these proteins and their applications. Antifreeze proteins are an exciting model system for the study of protein-surface (ice) interaction. They have served as unique model structures in protein science and they are also useful tools in the study of fish physiology and behaviour. Their emergence in some fish species has even provided a rare glimpse of de novo protein evolution in action. To cover the diverse aspects of fish antifreeze study, a wide spectrum of researchers was selected to write comprehensive articles on different areas of antifreeze research. This text should be a very useful and informative resource for life science researchers.

Book Transcriptional Regulation of the Antifreeze Protein Genes in Winter Flounder

Download or read book Transcriptional Regulation of the Antifreeze Protein Genes in Winter Flounder written by Ming Megan Miao and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winter flounder, 'Pleuronectes americanus', produces two types of antifreeze proteins (AFPs) to avoid freezing during winter. The expression of the liver-type AFPs (wflAFPs) and skin-type AFPs (wfsAFPs) are differentially regulated by environmental factors and growth hormone. The only intron of the wflAFP gene acts as a liver-specific enhancer and a more refined core sequence Element B interacts with a liver-enriched transcription factor C/EBPÃ and a presumptive antifreeze enhancer-binding protein (AEP). In the present study, the specific binding of C/EBPÃ to Element B and the presumptive AEP was confirmed in both rat and flounder liver extracts. Element B of the wflAFP gene was shown to be the core enhancer. Mutations of Element B significantly decreased the enhancer activity of the wflAFP gene intron. Recombinant C/EBPÃ interacted specifically with Element B and transactivated the wflAFP gene expression, indicating its pivotal role in the liver-specific expression of wflAFP gene. Also, C/EBP proteins were shown to be present in winter flounder. Moreover, IGF-1 and PI3-kinase were found to inhibit the wflAFP gene expression, suggesting their involvement in wflAFP gene regulation. In addition, the intron of a wfsAFP gene was shown to be a ubiquitous enhancer. Element S, the corresponding region of Element B of the wfsAFP intron, did not interact with C/EBPÃ, while it still bound to the antifreeze enhancer-binding protein. As expected, a TA insertion in Element B of the wflAFP gene intron destroyed its liver-specific enhancer activity. Finally, the identity of rat AEP was revealed as a novel protein with 988 residues in length. It is homologous to Smubp-2/Rip-1 with DNA-binding domain and putative helicase motifs. AEP interacted specifically with Element B and was necessary for the transactivation of the enhancer of the wflAFP gene. Furthermore, AEP was shown to be widely expressed in various tissues and its homologous gene was present in flounder. The present study provides a mechanism(s) by which the differential tissue distribution of the wflAFP and wfsAFP gene expression can be achieved. A model is proposed integrating the involvement of GH and IGF-1 signaling pathway as well as the roles of C/EBPÃ and AEP in mediating the seasonal and hormonal regulation of the AFP genes in winter flounder.

Book Life Under Extreme Conditions

Download or read book Life Under Extreme Conditions written by Guido di Prisco and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In their very first lecture biochemists learn that biomolecules, namely nucleic acids, proteins and lipids, are extremely temperature sensitive and will denature and lose their function easily. Then how do Archaebacteria survive in hot springs or Antarctic fishes which live in ice-cold water? The way nature engineered subcellular structures, lipid membranes or proteins to meet the biochemical requirements of extreme conditions - like extreme temperature or salt concentrations - is described in Life Under Extreme Conditions.

Book Identification of Ligand Binding Site and Protein Protein Interaction Area

Download or read book Identification of Ligand Binding Site and Protein Protein Interaction Area written by Irena Roterman-Konieczna and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-10-19 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a review of the latest numerical techniques used to identify ligand binding and protein complexation sites. It should be noted that there are many other theoretical studies devoted to predicting the activity of specific proteins and that useful protein data can be found in numerous databases. The aim of advanced computational techniques is to identify the active sites in specific proteins and moreover to suggest a generalized mechanism by which such protein-ligand (or protein-protein) interactions can be effected. Developing such tools is not an easy task – it requires extensive expertise in the area of molecular biology as well as a firm grasp of numerical modeling methods. Thus, it is often viewed as a prime candidate for interdisciplinary research.

Book Insects at Low Temperature

    Book Details:
  • Author : Richard Lee
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 147570190X
  • Pages : 516 pages

Download or read book Insects at Low Temperature written by Richard Lee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of insects at low temperature is a comparatively new field. Only recently has insect cryobiology begun to mature, as research moves from a descriptive approach to a search for underlying mechanisms at diverse levels of organization ranging from the gene and cell to ecological and evolutionary relationships. Knowledge of insect responses to low temperature is crucial for understanding the biology of insects living in seasonally varying habitats as well as in polar regions. It is not possible to precisely define low temperature. In the tropics exposure to 10-15°C may induce chill coma or death, whereas some insects in temperate and polar regions remain active and indeed even able to fly at O°C or below. In contrast, for persons interested in cryopreservation, low temperature may mean storage in liquid nitrogen at - 196°C. In the last decade, interest in adaptations of invertebrates to low temperature has risen steadily. In part, this book had its origins in a symposium on this subject that was held at the annual meeting of the Entomological Society of America in Louisville, Kentucky, USA in December, 1988. However, the emergence and growth of this area has also been strongly influenced by an informal group of investigators who met in a series of symposia held in Oslo, Norway in 1982, in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada in 1985 and in Cambridge, England in 1988. Another is scheduled for Binghamton, New York, USA (1990).

Book Marine Proteins and Peptides

Download or read book Marine Proteins and Peptides written by Se-Kwon Kim and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-03-18 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food proteins and bioactive peptides play a vital role in thegrowth and development of the body’s structural integrity andregulation, as well as having a variety of other functionalproperties. Land animal-derived food proteins such as collagen andgelatine carry risks of contamination (such as BSE). Marine-derivedproteins, which can provide equivalents to collagen and gelatinwithout the associated risks, are becoming more popular amongconsumers because of their numerous health beneficial effects. Mostmarine-derived bioactive peptides are currently underutilized. While fish and shellfish are perhaps the most obvious sources ofsuch proteins and peptides, there is also the potential for furtherdevelopment of proteins and peptides from sources like algae, seacucumber and molluscs. Marine-derived proteins and peptides alsohave potential uses in novel products, with the possibility of widecommercialization in the food, beverage, pharmaceutical andcosmetic industries, as well as in other fields such asphotography, textiles, leather, electronics, medicine andbiotechnology. Marine Proteins and Peptides: Biological Activities andApplications presents an overview of the current status, future industrial perspectives and commercial trends of bioactivemarine-derived proteins and peptides. Many of the industrialperspectives are drawn from the food industry, but the book alsorefers to the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries. There haverecently been significant advances in isolating functionalingredients from marine bio-resources and seafood by-products foruse in these industries, but little has been published, creating aknowledge gap, particularly with regard to the isolation andpurification processes. This book is the first to fill thatgap. Marine Proteins and Peptides: Biological Activities andApplications is a valuable resource for researchers inmarine biochemistry field as well as food industry managersinterested in exploring novel techniques and knowledge onalternative food protein sources. It will become a standardreference book for researchers involved in developing marinebio-resources and seafood by-products for novel nutraceutical, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical applications. It will also appeal tomanagers and product developers in the food, pharmaceutical andcosmetics industries, particularly those looking to usemarine-derived proteins and peptides as substitutes or replacementsfor unfashionable or outdated food components.
