Book The Analysis of Shear Wall Structures and Their Interaction with Elastic Foundations

Download or read book The Analysis of Shear Wall Structures and Their Interaction with Elastic Foundations written by N. W. Adams and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The various structural forms commonly adopted for the construction of multi-storey structures are outlined and the advantages of the use of shear walls as the load bearing elements in such structures are indicated. It is shown that, although a considerable amount of research has been devoted to the analysis of multi-storey structures, very little attention has been paid to the effects of foundation deformations on these structures. Three methods for the analysis of shear wall structures are indicated and the suitability of the continuous connection technique for the investigation of the effects of foundation deformations is shown. Two-dimensional coupled shear wall systems and single walls or box cores, all of which may be based on elastic foundations are analysed subjected to either of two generalised distributions of horizontal forces. The expressions derived for plane coupled shear walls are adapted to produce methods whereby design curves may be drawn for the rapid evaluation of stresses and deflections. The relationships derived for the two-dimensional analysis are used to derive a method for the analysis of the load distribution in three-dimensional multi-storey shear wall structures subjected to any system of lateral loads which may produce bending and torsion of the structure. The suitability of the analytical methods for the numerical computation of problems involving shear wall structures is discussed with particular reference to the feasibility of hand calculations and the development of a useful system of programs for computer analysis. The results of a number of numerical studies, carried out with the aid of the computer programs, are given to illustrate various aspects of the theory. The importance of accurately determining the extent and nature of the lateral load bearing systems within a structure is illustrated. The convergence of solutions obtained using the two load distributions are compared and the applications of each are discussed. The effects of varying the flexibility of the foundations, both of a two-dimensional coupled wall system and of specific walls in three-dimensional structures are illustrated by examples. A description is given of an experimental investigation carried out to study the effects of the elastic deformation of foundations on model shear wall structures constructed from "Perspex" sheets. The results of a comprehensive series of tests on the models are compared with the corresponding analytical solutions in order to assess the validity of the assumptions which were made in the derivation of the analytical methods.

Book excerpt: Tall Buildings provides information and research on tall buildings. This book presents the advances in structural analysis, in methods of design, in methods of construction, and in the properties of materials. Organized into three sections encompassing 27 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the important features of the interaction of a tall building with the wind. This text then examines the reasons for requiring a more rational and refined approach to the wind loading of tall buildings. Other chapters consider the different solutions to the layout of plans for offices and flats using shear walls. This book discusses as well the comparisons made in respect of construction, design, and economy. The final chapter deals with the increase in the number of tall buildings, for both residential and commercial purposes, under construction throughout the world. This book is a valuable resource for civil, structural, consulting, and research engineers.

Book Structural Dynamics of Earthquake Engineering

Download or read book Structural Dynamics of Earthquake Engineering written by S Rajasekaran and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2009-05-30 with total page 909 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the risk of earthquakes in many countries, knowing how structural dynamics can be applied to earthquake engineering of structures, both in theory and practice, is a vital aspect of improving the safety of buildings and structures. It can also reduce the number of deaths and injuries and the amount of property damage. The book begins by discussing free vibration of single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) systems, both damped and undamped, and forced vibration (harmonic force) of SDOF systems. Response to periodic dynamic loadings and impulse loads are also discussed, as are two degrees of freedom linear system response methods and free vibration of multiple degrees of freedom. Further chapters cover time history response by natural mode superposition, numerical solution methods for natural frequencies and mode shapes and differential quadrature, transformation and Finite Element methods for vibration problems. Other topics such as earthquake ground motion, response spectra and earthquake analysis of linear systems are discussed.Structural dynamics of earthquake engineering: theory and application using Mathematica and Matlab provides civil and structural engineers and students with an understanding of the dynamic response of structures to earthquakes and the common analysis techniques employed to evaluate these responses. Worked examples in Mathematica and Matlab are given. - Explains the dynamic response of structures to earthquakes including periodic dynamic loadings and impulse loads - Examines common analysis techniques such as natural mode superposition, the finite element method and numerical solutions - Investigates this important topic in terms of both theory and practise with the inclusion of practical exercise and diagrams

Book Three Dimensional Analysis of Non planar Coupled Shear Walls

Download or read book Three Dimensional Analysis of Non planar Coupled Shear Walls written by Re Ato Lu Rifat and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, a rapid increase has taken place in the number of tall buildings. In multi-storey buildings made of reinforced concrete, the lateral loads are often resisted by specially arranged shear walls. Weakening of shear walls in tall buildings by doors, windows and corridor openings is one of the most frequently encountered problems of structural engineering. In planar coupled shear wall analyses, the lateral loads are applied in such a way that the deformation of the shear wall is confined within its own plane. In this book, the Continous Connection Method (CCM) is used in conjunction with Vlasov's theory of thin-walled beams, for the three dimensional analysis of non-planar coupled shear walls subjected to lateral loads which produce combined flexural and torsional deformations. To be more general, the present book deals with non-symmetrical structures both in the formulation and in the numerical applications. Both symmetrical and asymmetrical examples have been solved by the program prepared in the present study and compared with the solutions found by the SAP2000 structural analysis program and a perfect match has been observed.

Book Structural Analysis of Multi Storey Buildings

Download or read book Structural Analysis of Multi Storey Buildings written by Karoly A. Zalka and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-03-02 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The structural analysis of multi-storey buildings can be carried out using discrete (computer-based) models or creating continuum models that lead to much simpler albeit normally approximate results. The book relies on the second approach and presents the theoretical background and the governing differential equations (for researchers) and simple closed-form solutions (for practicing structural engineers). The continuum models also help to understand how the stiffness and geometrical characteristics influence the three-dimensional behaviour of complex bracing systems. The back-of-the-envelop formulae for the maximum deflection and rotation, load shares, fundamental frequency and critical load facilitate quick global structural analysis for even large buildings. It is shown how the global critical load ratio can be used for monitoring the "health" of the structure acting as a performance indicator and "safety factor". Evaluating the results of over sixteen hundred calculations, the accuracy of the procedures is comprehensively demonstrated by comparing the discrete and continuum results. Nineteen worked examples illustrate the use of the methods, whose downloadable MathCad and Excel worksheets (www.crcpress.com/ 9780367350253) can also be used as templates for similar practical situations.

Book Approximate Analysis of Shear Wall frame Structures

Download or read book Approximate Analysis of Shear Wall frame Structures written by Saurendranath Guhamajumdar and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A computer analysis has been developed to predict the behavior of tall buildings subjected to lateral loads. The buildings considered are composed of shear walls and frames. Each shear wall-frame unit undergoes equal lateral deformations and the structure as a whole does not deform torsionally. The analysis is performed on a subassemblage consisting of a lumped shear wall system and a simple substitute frame. The load-deflection relationship for the structure is determined up to the ultimate load. The formation of plastic hinges in the substitute frame has been considered as well as the inelastic action of the wall. In addition, the secondary moments produced by the axial forces in the columns acting through the sway displacements of the structure are considered. The lumping procedure used to form the subassemblage is discussed and the analysis of the subassemblage in both the elastic and inelastic range, including the P-[delta] effect, is presented. The results of the analysis are compared with those obtained by other methods. The behavior of a shear wall-frame structure is discussed and illustrated by an example.
