Book Interaction of Organotin Compounds with Model and Biological Membranes

Download or read book Interaction of Organotin Compounds with Model and Biological Membranes written by Enrico Bertoli and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organotin compounds find extensive commercial applications in three main areas: as heat stabilizers for PVC polymers, as industrial and agricultural biocides, and as industrial catalysts for a variety of chemical reactions. The widespread use of tributyltins (TBTs) has necessitated studies aimed at a better understanding of the effects of exposure of TBT compounds to mammals. The cellular and biological effects of TBTs have been examined in order to elucidate their molecular mode of action, as the plasma membrance can be considered to be the first target site of a cell. In particular, TBTs are potent membrane toxicants, their interaction with the constituent membrane. In general, the toxicity of TBTs is less than that of the dibutyltins, which in turn is less than that of monobutyltins; within a series of trialkyltin compounds, the lower homologues, trimethyltins and triethyltins.

Their chemically versatile structure makes organotin compounds able to bind to a variety of biomolecules thus widely affecting biological functions. Trisubstituted molecules, namely tributyltin (TBT) and triphenyltin (TPhT), have been widely employed in antifouling paints and are also exploited as plastic stabilizers that unfortunately cause harmful biological effects. Persistent bioaccumulation has resulted in organotins becoming a significant environmental threat. Chapter by chapter, the biological and biochemical effec.

Book Biological Effects by Organotins

Download or read book Biological Effects by Organotins written by Toshihiro Horiguchi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of the induction mechanism of imposex caused by organotin compounds in gastropods, as well as fundamental information on the physiology and biochemistry of reproduction in mollusks. Are the sex hormones of gastropod mollusks vertebrate-type steroids, or neuropeptides? What about lipid disturbance and membrane toxicity due to organotin compounds? The book also discusses the latest findings on the role of nuclear receptors, such as retinoid X receptor (RXR), retinoic acid receptor (RAR) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR), in the development of imposex in gastropods. Further, it describes the current state of contamination by organotins in the marine environment and gastropod imposex, with a special focus on Europe and Asia, introduces readers to analytical techniques for organotin compounds, and assesses the contamination and adverse effects of alternatives to organotin-based antifouling paints. Imposex, a superimposition of male genital tracts, such as penis and vas deferens, on female gastropod mollusks, is known as a typical phenomenon or consequence of endocrine disruption in wildlife. Imposex is typically induced by very low concentrations of organotin compounds, such as tributyltin (TBT) and triphenyltin (TPhT) from antifouling paints on ships and fishing nets. Reproductive failure may be brought about in severely affected stages of imposex, resulting in population decline and/or mass extinction. Thus, gastropod imposex has been recognized as a critical environmental pollution issue. Although gastropod imposex is also highly interesting for the biological sciences because of its acquired pseudohermaphroditism and/or sex change by certain chemicals, such as TBT and TPhT, the mechanism that induces the development of imposex remains unclear, possibly due to our limited understanding of the endocrinology of gastropod mollusks. This book offers a useful guide for professionals and students interested in the fields of aquatic biology, invertebrate physiology, ecotoxicology and environmental science.

Book Pollutant Solid Phase Interactions Mechanisms Chemistry and Modeling

Download or read book Pollutant Solid Phase Interactions Mechanisms Chemistry and Modeling written by Tarek A. Kassim and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-09-11 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growth in the numbers of organic chemicals during recent decades has been extraordinary. Most are complex compounds that are released directly and/or indirectly to the surrounding environment. A view is emerging in relation to environmental protection and hazardous substance management that (1) some organic chemicals and/or organic leachates from solid waste materials and contaminated sediment/soil sites are of such extreme environmental concern that all use should be highly controlled including isolation for disposal; and (2) most hazardous substances are of sufficient social value that their continual use, production and disposal are justified. For these chemicals their types, sources, fate, behavior, effects and remediation at solid- aqueous phase interfaces must be fully assessed and understood. This assessment and understanding are essential for society to accept risks of adverse ecological or human health effects.
