Book excerpt: From proceedings of the International Summer Institute in surface science; Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA (28 Aug 1973). Molecular beam - surface scattering experiments, the nature of elastic and inelastic scattering, and the information obtained from detection of the angular distribution and kinetic energy of the scattered particles are described. The types of energy exchange that take place between a gas atom or molecule and the surface atoms and the theories that have been developed to explain some of these energy transfer processes are discussed. Finally the results of some experiments are reviewed, and directions for future research are pointed out. (JFP).

Book Interaction of Atoms and Molecules with Solid Surfaces

Download or read book Interaction of Atoms and Molecules with Solid Surfaces written by V. Bortolani and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-22 with total page 693 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is considerable interest, both fundamental and technological, in the way atoms and molecules interact with solid surfaces. Thus the description of heterogeneous catalysis and other surface reactions requires a detailed understand ing of molecule-surface interactions. The primary aim of this volume is to provide fairly broad coverage of atoms and molecules in interaction with a variety of solid surfaces at a level suitable for graduate students and research workers in condensed matter physics, chemical physics, and materials science. The book is intended for experimental workers with interests in basic theory and concepts and had its origins in a Spring College held at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Miramare, Trieste. Valuable background reading can be found in the graduate-Ievel introduction to the physics of solid surfaces by ZangwilI(1) and in the earlier works by Garcia Moliner and F1ores(2) and Somorjai.(3) For specifically molecule-surface interac tions, additional background can be found in Rhodin and Ertl(4) and March.(S) V. Book MOLECULAR BEAM SURFACE INTERACTIONS

Download or read book MOLECULAR BEAM SURFACE INTERACTIONS written by MASSACHUSETTS INST OF TECH CAMBRIDGE. and published by . This book was released on 1944 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the work was to study the detailed behavior of gas molecules at a solid boundary in order to gain understanding of gas-solid collision phenomena. Experimentally, the scheme involves analysis of the velocity distribution of a beam of molecules incident on a solid surface and analysis of velocity and spatial distribution of the molecules after surface collision. The experimental work has thus far been directed towards the development of: (1) a molecular velocity spectrometer, (2) a vacuum apparatus, and (3) a signal detection and discrimination system. The report includes primarily a description of these components.

Book Interaction of Charged Particles and Atoms with Surfaces

Download or read book Interaction of Charged Particles and Atoms with Surfaces written by and published by Springer. This book was released on 1995-06-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface physics has experienced in the last decades an explosive expansion caused by the development and/or substantial improvement of surface sensitive techniques and UHV apparatuses. It has grown into a mature field of research, with data of the highest accuracy and reproducibility. Surface physics is of great importance for technological applications like field effect devices, molecular beam epitaxy, chemisorption and catalysis, corrosion, surface hardening etc. The present volume III/24 is restricted to the so-called "clean" surfaces, i.e. to surfaces atomically clean and well characterized, leaving the more complex field of the contaminated surfaces and overlayers to a later occasion.

Book Dynamics of Gas Surface Interaction

Download or read book Dynamics of Gas Surface Interaction written by Giorgio Benedek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades surface science has experienced a large growth in connection with the development of various experimental techniques which are able to characterize solid surfaces through the observation of the scattering of ions, electrons, photons or atoms. These methods of investigation, known under different labels such as LEED, AES, XPS, UPS, etc. have been extensively applied in describing the structure, morphology, and chemical and physical properties of crystal surfaces and interfaces of a large variety of materials of interest in solid-state physics, electronics, metallurgy, biophysics, and heterogeneous catalysis. Among these methods we wish to emphasize molecular beam scattering from solid surfaces. ~lolecular beam scattering has gone through a large development in the last ten years. In this decade a large number of laboratories have used this method to study various clean and adsorbate-covered surfaces. The technique is nonetheless quite old. It dates back to the beginning of the thirties, when Estermann and Stern performed the first atom diffraction experiment proving the wave nature of atoms. In the following years the entire subject of gas-surface interaction was considered a branch of rarefied gas dynamics and developed in connection with aerospace research. Attention was then given to the integral properties of gas-solid interactions (sticking and energy accomodation, mean momentum transfer) rather than to atom-surface scatter ing from well-characterized surfaces.

Book excerpt: First published in 1956, this classic work by N.F. Ramsey, 1989 Nobel Laureate in Physics, provides an account of atomic and molecular structure. After an introductory section reviewing experimental apparatus and the kinds of quantities that can be measured, Ramsey provides comprehensive accounts of gas kinetics, chemical equilibria, and atomic and nuclear magnetic moments by nonresonance methods. He also provides tables of nuclear moments, as well as detailed accounts of nuclear and molecular interactions. Finally there are sections on atomic fine and hyperfine structure, and the design of experimental apparatus. The focus throughout is on the physics of beams composed of electrically neutral particles. As a seminal work by one of the world's leading scientists, this volume will interest students and researchers in a range of fields, including atomic physics, physical chemistry, spectroscopy, and biological chemistry.

Book On the Behaviour of a Molecular Beam Scattered by a Solid Surface Additional Theoretical Study for Normal Incidence

Download or read book On the Behaviour of a Molecular Beam Scattered by a Solid Surface Additional Theoretical Study for Normal Incidence written by Silvio Nocilla and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present paper deals with the problem of the surface interaction between a rigid surface and a molecular beam normally incident on it. The interaction model is here generalized by introducing a suitable energy parameter which simulates the effect of the dissipative forces acting during the collisions between the surface atoms and the incident molecules. Then, the normal pressures and the total translation energies of all the scattered molecules, as well as the corresponding accommodation coefficients, are calculated. Then, a similarity rule between the above mentioned pressures and energies is deduced. At last, the obtained theoretical results are compared with the experimental ones deduced by Stickney and Hurlbut. (Author).
