Book Interaction of Low Energy Electronics with Adsorbed Molecules Mechanisms of Energy Transfer and Dissociation

Download or read book Interaction of Low Energy Electronics with Adsorbed Molecules Mechanisms of Energy Transfer and Dissociation written by Leon Sanche and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chemical reactivity of molecules physisorbed or chemisorbed on solid surfaces is a topic of interest in many areas of applied physics and chemistry. A large portion of the activity in this field of research has been focused on the catalytic action of surfaces; however, the recent discoveries on the possibility to enhance, trigger and even control chemical reactions with photon and particle beams incident on surfaces are now starting to shift scientific interests toward studies of the dynamics involved in these non-thermal reactions. Particularly, photon and electron beam methods are expected to surpass present macroscopic methods (e.g., plasma etching) in the manufacture of microelectronic and micromechanical devices requiring fine-line lithography . One class of such techniques involves the utilization of laser photons with energies ranging from 0.1 eV in the infrared to 6 eV in the ultraviolet. Many of the laser-driven surface reactions are expected to be caused by the photogeneration of low-energy electrons which transfer energy to an adsorbate causing dissociation and desorption. Low-energy electrons are also expected to play a dominant role in the basic physical and chemical mechanisms involved in microlithography techniques utilizing high-energy radiation such as direct writing with an electron beam and etching with laser- or synchrotrongenerated X-rays.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the latest to appear in a series documenting the progress of this exciting field in surface science. It presents recent results and reviews of the rapidly growing field of interaction of particles and lasers with solid surfaces leading to excitation, ionisation and desorption. The main emphasis is on the microscopic understanding of DIET, especially electron- and ion-induced desorption of adsorbed layers, emission from insulators, laser-induced desorption and ablation, photophysics and photochemistry. Applications ranging from laser ablation for medical purposes to DIET in high-temperature superconductors are also described.

Book Surface Science

Download or read book Surface Science written by Kurt W. Kolasinski and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-03-30 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface science has evolved from being a sub-field of chemistry or physics, and has now established itself as an interdisciplinary topic. Knowledge has developed sufficiently that we can now understand catalysis from a surface science perspective. No-where is the underpinning nature of surface science better illustrated than with nanoscience. Now in its third edition, this successful textbook aims to provide students with an understanding of chemical transformations and the formation of structures at surfaces. The chapters build from simple to more advanced principles with each featuring exercises, which act not only to demonstrate concepts arising in the text but also to form an integral part of the book, with the last eight chapters featuring worked solutions. This completely revised and expanded edition features: More than 100 new pages of extensive worked solutions New topics, including: Second harmonic generation (SHG), Sum Frequency Generation (SFG) at interfaces and capillary waves An expanded treatment of charge transfer and carbon-based materials including graphene Extended ‘Frontiers and Challenges’ sections at the end of each chapter. This text is suitable for all students taking courses in surface science in Departments of Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, as well as for researchers and professionals requiring an up-to-date review of the subject.

Book Topics in Electron Diffraction and Microscopy of Materials

Download or read book Topics in Electron Diffraction and Microscopy of Materials written by Peter. B Hirsch and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Topics in Electron Diffraction and Microscopy of Materials celebrates the retirement of Professor Michael Whelan from the University of Oxford. Professor Whelan taught many of today's heads of department and was a pioneer in the development and use of electron microscopy. His collaborators and colleagues, each one of whom has made important advances in the use of microscopy to study materials, have contributed to this cohesive work. The book provides a useful overview of current applications for selected electron microscope techniques that have become important and widespread in their use for furthering our understanding of how materials behave. Linked through the dynamical theory of electron diffraction and inelastic scattering, the topics discussed include the history and impact of electron microscopy in materials science, weak-beam techniques for problem solving, defect structures and dislocation interactions, using beam diffraction patterns to look at defects in structures, obtaining chemical identification at atomic resolution, theoretical developments in backscattering channeling patterns, new ways to look at atomic bonds, using numerical simulations to look at electronic structure of crystals, RHEED observations for MBE growth, and atomic level imaging applications.

Book Beam Effects Surface Topography and Depth Profiling in Surface Analysis

Download or read book Beam Effects Surface Topography and Depth Profiling in Surface Analysis written by Alvin W. Czanderna and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many books are available that detail the basic principles of the different methods of surface characterization. On the other hand, the scientific literature provides a resource of how individual pieces of research are conducted by particular labo- tories. Between these two extremes the literature is thin but it is here that the present volume comfortably sits. Both the newcomer and the more mature scientist will find in these chapters a wealth of detail as well as advice and general guidance of the principal phenomena relevant to the study of real samples. In the analysis of samples, practical analysts have fairly simple models of how everything works. Superimposed on this ideal world is an understanding of how the parameters of the measurement method, the instrumentation, and the char- teristics of the sample distort this ideal world into something less precise, less controlled, and less understood. The guidance given in these chapters allows the scientist to understand how to obtain the most precise and understood measu- ments that are currently possible and, where there are inevitable problems, to have clear guidance as the extent of the problem and its likely behavior.
