Book Soviet Research on the Transport of Intense Relativistic Electron Beams Through High pressure Air

Download or read book Soviet Research on the Transport of Intense Relativistic Electron Beams Through High pressure Air written by Nikita Wells and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soviet research on the propagation of intense relativistic electron beams (IREB) through fairly high-pressure air (pressure range 0.1 to 760 Torr) since the early 1970s has included the study of the plasma channel created by the passage of the electron beam through air, the resistive hose instability and its effect on beam propagation, the effect of self-fields, current enhancement, gas expansion, return currents, inherent beam energy spread, and other factors. This report covers Soviet developments in IREB propagation through air where the beam is not focused by external magnetic fields. The information was obtained from Soviet open-source publications with emphasis given to the last ten years of beam propagation in the Soviet Union. The volume of papers published on this subject in recent years indicates a significant increase in Soviet research in this area.

Book Intense Relativistic Electron Beam Investigations

Download or read book Intense Relativistic Electron Beam Investigations written by Wesley O. Doggett and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Intense Relativistic Electron Beam Investigation', was reported in the 'Interim Scientific Report to the AFOSR for the period October 1, 1979 to September 30, 1980' and is herewith included by reference as part of this final report. Progress during the second (final) year of this contract is reported herein. In particular the following topics are discussed: (a) collective ion acceleration experiments using relativistic electron beams and localized ion sources produced by thin films, filaments, puffed gases and vaporization of small diameter wires; and (b) electron beam quality studies experiments in collaboration with Drs. Robert K. Parker and V.L. Granatstein at the Naval Research Laboratory with the objective of obtaining 'cool' beams propagating in vacuum in an axial magnetic field obtaining 'cool' beams propagating in vacuum in an axial magnetic field with minimum energy spread for such applications as the free electron laser.

Book Profile of a Relativistic Electron Beam Propagated Through a Linear Wiggler and an Axial Guide Field

Download or read book Profile of a Relativistic Electron Beam Propagated Through a Linear Wiggler and an Axial Guide Field written by B. Hafizi and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The density and parallel temperature of an electron beam passing through a magnetic guide field and a linear wiggler are determined as functions of distance from the anode. Starting with a given beam emittance and phase space distribution at the anode, single-particle orbits are employed to propagate the beam along the drift tube. Finite gyro-orbit effects induce substantial modulation in density. Additionally, the evolution of an initial spread in the parallel speed of the electrons is sensitively dependent on the wiggler strength and contributes to further density fluctuation. The beam's parallel temperature, a critical factor in determining laser efficiency and gain, is found to increase significantly when the wiggler strength is raised. Keywords: Relativistic electron beams, Directed-beam quality, Propagation through Guide field and Linear wiggler, Density modulation, and Effective temperature.

Book Wave Particle Interactions on Relativistic Electron Beams

Download or read book Wave Particle Interactions on Relativistic Electron Beams written by Ira B. Bernstein and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A summary of research performed under subject contract is given. The work is in the main concerned with the theory, both linear and non-linear, for the gain of a free electron laser (FEL) in a strong axial magnetic field. Both wiggler and wiggler-free configuration are considered. An experimental study is described of the transition from helical to non-helical orbits in a wiggler with a guide field. THe exact magnetic field of a filimentary bifilar current-carrying helix is given. The degradation in gain of a FEL without axial guide field due to velocity spread is given. Twelve published papers are appended. (Author).

Book Intense Electron Beam Propagation Across a Magnetic Field

Download or read book Intense Electron Beam Propagation Across a Magnetic Field written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper we consider the propagation of an intense electron-ion beam across an applied magnetic field. In the absence of the applied field, the beam system is in a Bennett equilibrium state that involves electrons with both large axial and thermal velocities and a cold stationary space-charge neutralizing ion species. Typical parameters under consideration are V{sub o} (approximately) 1 MV, I (approximately) 5 kA, T{sub e} (approximately) 100 keV, and beam radii (approximately) 1 cm. We find that in the intense beam regime, the propagation is limited due to space-charge depression caused by the deflection of the electron beam by the transverse field. This critical field is of the order of the peak self-magnetic field of the electron beam which is substantially higher than the single particle cut-off field. 8 refs., 3 figs.

Book Guiding of Self focused Relativistic Electron Beams

Download or read book Guiding of Self focused Relativistic Electron Beams written by Thomas G. Roberts and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The magnetic field of a conventional linear pinched argon plasma was used to guide a self-focused intense beam of relativistic electrons. A 30-nsec, 30,000-amp pulse of 3.5 MeV electrons was extracted from the electrode space of a flash X-ray machine and injected into the end of a cylindrical plasma column. The plasma column contained a 90-deg bend on a radius of 15 cm and the high energy electron beam was guided around this curve without becoming defocused and without causing the plasma column to become unstable.
