Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book deals with structural changes relating to the Indian Economy through an over time view in an intercountry perspective. We have examined in this study the structural changes and growth performance of the Indian Economy and contrasted it with the happenings across a set of countries at different levels of development. The Indian Economy is first examined in isolation and then an inter-country analysis is carried out where some of the features depicted by the Indian Economy are further tested. The structural changes in the Indian Economy are examined on the basis of twenty two structural variables as were identified by Syrquin and Chenesy (1989). We also examine Economy and also for a set of countries at different levels of development.

Book The Effects of Space on Inter State Growth Dynamics and Income Disparities in India Modeling the Simultaneous Growth of a System of Spatial Units

Download or read book The Effects of Space on Inter State Growth Dynamics and Income Disparities in India Modeling the Simultaneous Growth of a System of Spatial Units written by Adriana Kocornik-Mina and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation examines the effects of spatial-specific conditions on trends in inter-state disparities in a sample of 17 Indian states. It employs an extended Lotka-Volterra model to estimate the magnitude and direction of inter-state growth dynamics and the long run collective behavior of this system of states. The study evaluates the estimates of growth effects or inter-state growth dynamics and offers meaningful insights into their association with the varying levels and rates of growth of income per capita of states in the sample. It also models and compares growth effects that are driven by geographical proximity with those that are driven by structures that are equivalent. There are several significant contributions of this dissertation. First, it develops a new methodology that makes it possible to model spatial and, more significantly, structural dynamic spillover effects among spatial units. Second, it provides new insight into the relationship between divergent tendencies in the Indian economy (despite a long history of India's attempt to deploy a generally balanced growth policy) and both their spatial and structural relations. And third, the empirical findings show that the methodology enables a deeper insight into potential policy prescriptions for the nation, its states and combinations of states.

Book Structural Transformation of the Indian Economy

Download or read book Structural Transformation of the Indian Economy written by Shivani Jaswal and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic development has often been associated with structural changes in any economy. The 1990's ushered a remarkable shift from the long-established principles held since Indian Independence(such as self-reliance and socialistic policies of economic development)which resulted in the isolation, overall backwardness and inefficiency in the Indian economy. The new economic reforms of '91 aimed at making India the fastest growing and a globally competitive nation. These reforms with respect to industrial sector, trade and financial sector aimed at making the Indian economy more efficient.Furthermore, the technical transfer from the multi-national companies put India on a higher footing. However, unlike various other economies India's growth path has been characterized by service-led rather than manufacturing-led growth. This book attempts to study the distinctiveness of the pattern of India's economic growth over the past few decades, which has probably gone unnoticed, as the euphoria over emergence of India as one of the fastest growing economies of the world seems to have overshadowed the fact of rather intriguing and somewhat a historical pattern of its growth.

Book Structure and Structural Changes in India

Download or read book Structure and Structural Changes in India written by Sudhir K. Thakur and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This research aims to provide an understanding of the economic structure and structural change for the Indian economy at the national and regional levels applying the fundamental economic structure (FES) approach. The overarching problem addressed in this study is whether there are identifiable patterns of relations between various macro aggregates and economic transactions as revealed via input-output tables. Would identification of such patterns allow regional analysts to predict economic change? The FES construct implies that selected characteristics of an economy will vary predictably with region size, as measured by gross national/regional product, population and total gross output. Jensen, Hewings and West discussed three approaches: 'partitioned', 'tiered', and 'temporal' to identify FES. This study utilizes the tiered approach. A linear and logarithmic regression models are used to identify the FES and non-FES cells for the Indian national and regional economies. The research questions addressed are: Does an identifiable FES exists for the Indian national and regional economies? What proportions of the cells are predictable? Can the 1968-90 temporal FES predict the 1993-94 input-output table and if the regional FES can predict the Punjab 1983-84 table? Does the temporal and regional FES manifest an enhanced understanding of the Indian economic structure? Small sample estimation issues are addressed using the maximum entropy econometrics and cross-entropy methods. The national input-output tables for 1968-69, 1973-74, 1978-79, 1983-84, 1989-90, 1993-94 and regional input-output table for 1965 for twenty-one regions provide data for the analysis. FES analysis reveals the existence of temporal and regional FES in India. Utilizing total sector output and logarithmic total sector output as the predictors, 54.0 percent of the cells were determined to be predictable at the national level and 61.7 percent of the cells were predictable at the regional level. A pertinent observation is the existence of FES cells that are predictable, stable and important. Therefore, temporal FES includes tertiary, primary and secondary sectors and the regional FES includes secondary and primary sectors as predominant components of FES. These patterns are unlike the Australian FES which included secondary, tertiary and trade sectors. A fundamental cell can be classified as: weak, moderate and strong.
