Book World Regional Social Policy and Global Governance

Download or read book World Regional Social Policy and Global Governance written by Bob Deacon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-12-04 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the case for and the prospects of the development of world-regional social policies as integral elements of a pluralistic, equitable and effective system of global governance. Focusing on transnational regionalism, this book examines the trajectory and crossing over of the three strands of scholarly analysis within the past decade which have given rise to this volume: the perceived negative impact of neo-liberal globalisation upon national social policy; the need for but the difficulty of securing reforms in the institutions of global social governance; and the increasing salience of the world-regional level of governance in handling cross-border issues. The authors develop an intellectual and research agenda that will also inform the political development of an international programme concerned with the social policy dimensions of regional governance. Combining the perspectives and collective expertise of a team of international scholars and activists, the book features: Theoretical and policy cases for a focus on regionalism and social policy A mapping and analysis of social policy dimensions of regional integration processes and formations in four continents An assessment of the regional dimensions of global agencies, in particular of the UN (ILO, WHO, UNESCO, UNDP) including the approach to regional social policy of the UN Regional Economic Commissions and Development Banks An articulation of a multi-levelled conceptualisation of global social governance within which regional associations of countries plays a significant part. The book will be of interest to students and scholars of social policy, development studies, international relations and political science, especially those focused on the public policy dimensions of globalisation, regionalisation and international development.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Comparative Regionalism

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Comparative Regionalism written by Tanja A. Börzel and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 705 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Comparative Regionalism - the first of its kind - offers a systematic and wide-ranging survey of the scholarship on regionalism, regionalization, and regional governance. Unpacking the major debates, leading authors of the field synthesize the state of the art, provide a guide to the comparative study of regionalism, and identify future avenues of research. Twenty-seven chapters review the theoretical and empirical scholarship with regard to the emergence of regionalism, the institutional design of regional organizations and issue-specific governance, as well as the effects of regionalism and its relationship with processes of regionalization. The authors explore theories of cooperation, integration, and diffusion explaining the rise and the different forms of regionalism. The handbook also discusses the state of the art on the world regions: North America, Latin America, Europe, Eurasia, Asia, North Africa and the Middle East, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Various chapters survey the literature on regional governance in major issue areas such as security and peace, trade and finance, environment, migration, social and gender policies, as well as democracy and human rights. Finally, the handbook engages in cross-regional comparisons with regard to institutional design, dispute settlement, identities and communities, legitimacy and democracy, as well as inter- and transregionalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the complex arena of international planning for development has until now been uniquely the privilege of influential senior western planners. This book calls into question many of their hallowed principles and much of the conventional wisdom still evident in the halls of academe. At a time of increasing enrollment of foreign students in North American planning programs, the emergence of a new voice has coincided with a growing skepticism, worldwide, about old notions of planning and development in poorer and ex-colonial countries. Now there is a need for brave innovations to reshape our understanding of the global crisis and the potential for progressive and democratic local solutions in both rich and poor nations alike. This new voice is given expression by academics and professionals from Third World nations who received their planning education in the west and who now hold posts in major western planning schools. Breaking the Boundaries presents their views, and those of concerned colleagues, about the need for a radically changed curriculum based on a comparative, one-world approach to planning education. Their personal experiences as young expatriate scholars, and later as teachers of both Third World and First World students in western planning schools are seen as crucial to this need for change. Through candid reflections and perceptive critiques of their own field- the spatial, environmental, social, design and communications disciplines - the contributors explore crucial issues in development planning from theoretical and professional practice perspectives.

Book BCIM Economic Cooperation

Download or read book BCIM Economic Cooperation written by Gurudas Das and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the strategic and economic logic behind the Bangladesh–China–India–Myanmar (BCIM) Regional Cooperation. According to estimates, BCIM covers approximately 9 percent of the world’s mass and 40 percent of the world’s population spanning across four countries, constituting the confluence of East, Southeast and South Asia. It contributes about 13 percent to world trade but ironically only 5 percent to inter-regional trade. This volume compares the various approaches to cooperation – trade-led vs project-led, geo-political vs geo-strategic, Sino-centric vs India-led. The chapters explore the complex interplay of geo-economics and geo-politics associated with BCIM sub-regional cooperation in general, and the BCIM Economic Corridor (BCIM-EC) in particular. It points to the current challenges that impede globalisation and economic growth, and critically reviews implications for the stakeholders, institutional frameworks and the spatial impact of the Corridor, especially on the underdeveloped regions. The book discusses the geo-political, geo-economic and geo-strategic advantages that will accrue to the member countries once the sub-regional cooperation becomes fully functional. It advocates the adoption of best practices from similar sub-regional groupings across the globe. This book will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of politics and international relations, geo-politics, strategic studies, sub-regional cooperation, South Asian studies, India–China relations, foreign trade and economics, besides those dealing with foreign policy and development cooperation. It will especially benefit policymakers, development agencies and strategic think tanks.
