Population ageing has significant implications for many public services such as health, transport, housing and social care; and people over pension age are expected to receive around £63 billion in state pensions and benefits in 2002-03. This report examines whether public services relevant to older people take adequate account of their characteristics and needs, and whether there is sufficient effective service co-ordination. It finds that the Government had made good progress towards meeting the varied needs of older people and achieving better service co-ordination through a variety of policy initiatives and consultations. However, there is scope for further improvement, for example, by publishing an overall strategy to co-ordinate work across departments, and by ensuring better feedback to older people on how services are improving.
