Book Inter institutional Agreements for Academic International Cooperation

Download or read book Inter institutional Agreements for Academic International Cooperation written by Adriane Marie Salm and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Scientific and Technological Agreements for International Cooperation (STAICs) between higher education institutions, and/or technical educational institutions and/or business institutions is part of the discourse of higher education, and constitutes an element of strategic importance in the process of the internationalization of higher education. However, there is little information about the relation between the language used in the academic agreements and the practices they represent. In order to contribute to this area of research, ten (10) STAICs between 5 Brazilian Higher education institutions and 7 foreign education institutions were analyzed in order to make a description of textual and contextual elements of this particular discourse. Regarding their configuration as a text, the STAICs were investigated in terms of their genericstructure potential. Transitivity choices and instances of modality were analyzed in order to look at, respectively, the representation of the universities in relation to the roles prescribed to them and their level of commitment towards those roles. Regarding contextual concerns, the STAICs were analyzed in terms of the power relations considering the performance of the participating universities in the enactment of those roles. The analysis draws on genre analysis (Hasan, 1985a, 1994, 2004), other genre studies (Meurer, 1998, 2002), Halliday#s (1994; Halliday & Matthiessen, 2004) Systemic Functional Grammar, notions from Giddens# (1979, 1984) Structuration Theory and the Law of the Subsidiary Character of the Scientific Production from Ramos# (1965) Theory of Sociological Reduction. Results have provided linguistic grounds tocharacterize this discourse as a type of promotional discourse as well as to show hidden evidence of power relations between its discourse participants.iv The results are expected to contribute as support for the fields of EFL teaching, Applied linguistics, Discourse Analysis including ESP and Business English, and Social Sciences.

Book Comparative Paradiplomacy

Download or read book Comparative Paradiplomacy written by Jorge Schiavon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studying paradiplomacy comparatively, this book explains why and how sub-state governments (SSG) conduct their international relations (IR) with external actors, and how federal authorities and local governments coordinate, or not, in the definition and implementation of the national foreign policy. Sub-state diplomacy plays an increasingly influential international role as regions, federal states, provinces and cities seek to promote trade, investments, cooperation and partnership on a range of issues. This raises interesting new questions about the future of the state system. Schiavon conducts a comparative study of paradiplomacy in 11 federal systems which are representative of all the regions of the world, stages of economic development and degree of consolidation of their democratic institutions (Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Germany, India, Mexico, Russia, South Africa and the United States). The author constructs a typology to measure and explain paradiplomacy based on domestic political institutions, especially constitutional provisions relating foreign affairs and the intergovernmental mechanisms for foreign policy decision making and implementation. This comparative, systematic and theoretically based analysis of paradiplomacy between and within countries will be of interest to scholars and students of comparative politics, diplomacy, foreign policy, governance and federalism, as well as practitioners of diplomacy and paradiplomacy around the world.

Book Research Collaboration between Europe and Latin America

Download or read book Research Collaboration between Europe and Latin America written by Rigas Arvanitis and published by Archives contemporaines. This book was released on 2014-02-19 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International collaboration has become increasingly important in carrying out research activities. This book, written by a large group of scholars from Europe and Latin America, maps, analyses and discusses research collaboration between the two continents during the last twenty years. The empirical material underlines the richness and the variety of the links that bind the two continents, well beyond the simplified views of science, either as the brainchild of global networking or as a result of dependence. The book also develops an innovative methodological approach, combining bibliometric analysis, social surveying, in-depth interviews, and a careful analysis of research programmes and policies. While arguing that the asymmetry of relations that once existed in cooperation has turned into a more equal partnership between the two continents, it deciphers some of the reasons behind this more balanced cooperation. It also challenges the view of science as a global self-organising system through collective action at the level of researchers themselves. On the contrary, the importance of policy, institutions, and previously developed research is highlighted and recognised

Book Inter Municipal Cooperation in Europe

Download or read book Inter Municipal Cooperation in Europe written by Filipe Teles and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sheds light on the central complexities of municipal cooperation and examines the dynamics, experiences and drivers of inter-municipal cooperation (IMC) in Europe. Particular attention is given to the features of governance arrangements and institutions created to generate and maintain collaborative settings between different local governments in a particular territory. The thematically grouped case studies presented here address the dearth of comprehensive and comparative analyses in recent scholarship. The authors provide fresh insights into the rise of inter-municipal cooperation and its evolution during a period of financial crisis and European Union enlargement. This includes critical examinations of the impact of austerity policies, the behavior and perceptions of key actors; and under-explored new member states. Crucially, this work goes beyond the comparison of institutional forms of IMC to address why the phenomenon so widespread and questions whether it is successful, manageable and democratic. This work which presents the most recent and innovative research on inter-local collaborative arrangements will appeal to practitioners as well as scholars of local government, public economy, public administration and policy.
