For example, a thought might "say" that grass is green or that Santa Claus is jolly, and a visual experience might be "of" a blue cup. While the existence of the phenomenon of intentionality is manifestly obvious, how exactly the mind gets to be "directed" at things, which may not even exist, is deeply mysterious and controversial. It has been long assumed that the best way to explain intentionality is in terms of tracking relations, information, functional roles, and similar notions. This book breaks from this tradition, arguing that the only empirically adequate and in principle viable theory of intentionality is one in terms of phenomenal consciousness, the felt, subjective, or qualitative feature of mental life. According to the theory advanced by Mendelovici, the phenomenal intentionality theory, there is a central kind of intentionality, phenomenal intentionality, that arises from phenomenal consciousness alone, and any other kind of intentionality derives from it. The phenomenal intentionality theory faces important challenges in accounting for the rich and sophisticated contents of thoughts, broad and object-involving contents, and nonconscious states. Mendelovici proposes a novel and particularly strong version of the theory that can meet these challenges. The end result is a radically internalistic picture of the mind, on which all phenomenally represented contents are literally in our heads, and any non-phenomenal contents we in some sense represent are expressly singled out by us.

Eric Chelstrom offers a unique account of how consciousness is formative of the social world-that is, in some cases our collectively thinking something to be the case is what makes it so. For instance, that the money one uses on a daily basis is worth something is not because of its physical characteristics, but because we believe that those physical traits, printed by the right institutions, make it so. Our institutions only have authority because we believe they do. This book promotes a position between atomism and collectivism. Chelstrom argues that there is, strictly speaking, no such thing as collective consciousness. Further, this book disputes the atomistic conception of the human subject, the view that individuals are like islands unto themselves, able to develop their capacities independent from others, and free of necessary relations to others. The resulting analysis in the work offers a strong challenge to common interpretations of the philosophy of Edmund Husserl. Social Phenomenology is primarily written for phenomenologists concerned with the social world. Its broader aim, however, is to draw into dialogue both analytic and continental philosophers working in social philosophy, specifically on collective intentionality. Book jacket.

Book excerpt: Kevin Hermberg's book fills an important gap in previous Husserl scholarship by focusing on intersubjectivity and empathy (i.e., the experience of others as other subjects) and by addressing the related issues of validity, the degrees of evidence with which something can be experienced, and the different senses of 'objective' in Husserl's texts. Despite accusations by commentators that Husserl's is a solipsistic philosophy and that the epistemologies in Husserl's late and early works are contradictory, Hermberg shows that empathy, and thus other subjects, are related to one's knowledge on the view offered in each of Husserl's Introductions to Phenomenology. Empathy is significantly related to knowledge in at least two ways, and Husserl's epistemology might, consequently, be called a social epistemology: (a) empathy helps to give evidence for validity and thus to solidify one's knowledge, and (b) it helps to broaden one's knowledge by giving access to what others have known. These roles of empathy are not at odds with one another; rather, both are at play in each of the Introductions (if even only implicitly) and, given his position in the earlier work, Husserl needed to expand the role of empathy as he did. Such a reliance on empathy, however, calls into question whether Husserl's is a transcendental philosophy in the sense Husserl claimed.

The flawed and prescriptive organizations these power brokers create have a singular intention: to replace the possibility of an innovative, collaborative and free society with a compliant, fearful citizenry unwittingly sacrificing their sovereignty to false, utopian promises. This book was written to help people understand how this process works. Only then can action be taken to move society in a more constructive direction. Its author, Greg Jemsek, worked at world headquarters of an international socio-spiritual organization during the 1970s gold rush of new religious movements into the U.S. His involvement led him, in short order, to being recruited to train with a select group of others in the terrorist tactics necessary to bring about a new world order. Those trainings served as the impetus to escape the organization, believing that doing so would put the cultic thinking embedded in its machinery into his past. To his surprise - and distress - he discovered an alarming reality over the next 35 years: ideological thinking is as integral to the success of mainstream organizations as it is to extremist groups. Success in todays world is based on 4 trends which, left unchecked, will undermine a societys capacity to build a constructive world: 1). The normalization of narcissism, 2) The erosion of authentic relationships through surrogacy, 3) The continued commitment to outmoded meta-narratives based on puritanical self-loathing and frontier era delusions about limitless growth, and 4) The continuous confusion between transcendence and transformation: a confusion prompting people to substitute emotional excitation for the hard work necessary to advance self-knowledge. The alternative to ideological living is not easy, but is essential if we are to face the complexity characterizing our times. As Quiet Horizon points out, this requires all of us to find ways to expand personal awareness, act in ethically braver ways, forge genuine relationships, and move beyond our fears individually and collectively. Doing so non-dogmatically allows all of us to contribute to the creation of an honorable, compassionate and just society. .
