Book Intensives and Down Toners

Download or read book Intensives and Down Toners written by C. Stoffel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Intensives and Down-Toners: A Study in English Adverbs Of intensives used to modify adjectives and adverbs, it may in general be said that most of them are adverbs derived from adjectives expressing absolute qualities, i. e. such as do not admit of variation, as, for example, pure, full, very, which in their strictest sense do not admit of degrees of comparison. For this reason they were naturally pitched upon to express the notion of completeness of a quality, so that, as we shall see in the sequel, pure blind, which has afterwards changed both its form and its meaning (purblind), originally meant «completely blind». But most of those intensives that originally expressed completeness, have in course of time come to mean merely a high degree of a quality; and this is in exact accordance with one of the well-established facts of word-history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Intensives and Down-Toners: A Study in English Adverbs This sense straightway would seem to have been archaic as early as Shakespeare, who has the phrase by and by almost exclusively in the modern sense of presently, before long. The only instance I know of in Shakespeare, in which by and by means straightway, is in II Henry VI, 11 1, 142: Now fetch me a stool hither by and by. Book Linguistic Inquiries into Donald Trump s Language

Download or read book Linguistic Inquiries into Donald Trump s Language written by Ulrike Schneider and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From an abundance of intensifiers to frequent repetition and parallelisms, Donald Trump's idiolect is highly distinctive from that of other politicians and previous Presidents of the United States. Combining quantitative and qualitative analyses, this book identifies the characteristic features of Trump's language and argues that his speech style, often sensationalized by the media, differs from the usual political rhetoric on more levels than is immediately apparent. Chapters examine Trump's tweets, inaugural address, political speeches, interviews, and presidential debates, revealing populist language traits that establish his idiolect as a direct reflection of changing social and political norms. The authors scrutinize Trump's conspicuous use of nicknames, the definite article, and conceptual metaphors as strategies of othering and antagonising his opponents. They further shed light on Trump's fake news agenda and his mutation of the conventional political apology which are strategically implemented for a political purpose. Drawing on methods from corpus linguistics, conversation analysis, and critical discourse analysis, this book provides a multifaceted investigation of Trump's language use and addresses essential questions about Trump as a political phenomenon.

Book Like Literally Dude

Download or read book Like Literally Dude written by Valerie Fridland and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2023-04-18 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "With easygoing authority... [Fridland] offers context, and a welcoming spirit, to the many contentious realignments in our language."—The Wall Street Journal “Smart and funny—I loved it!" —Mignon Fogarty, author of New York Times bestseller Grammar Girl’s Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing A lively linguistic exploration of the speech habits we love to hate—and why our “like”s and “literally”s actually make us better communicators Paranoid about the “ums” and “uhs” that pepper your presentations? Concerned that people notice your vocal fry? Bewildered by “hella” or the meteoric rise of “so”? What if these features of our speech weren’t a sign of cultural and linguistic degeneration, but rather, some of the most dynamic and revolutionary tools at our disposal? In Like, Literally, Dude, linguist Valerie Fridland shows how we can re-imagine these forms as exciting new linguistic frontiers rather than our culture’s impending demise. With delightful irreverence and expertise built over two decades of research, Fridland weaves together history, psychology, science, and laugh-out-loud anecdotes to explain why we speak the way we do today, and how that impacts what our kids may be saying tomorrow. She teaches us that language is both function and fashion, and that though we often blame the young, the female, and the uneducated for its downfall, we should actually thank them for their linguistic ingenuity. By exploring the dark corners every English teacher has taught us to avoid, Like, Literally, Dude redeems our most pilloried linguistic quirks, arguing that they are fundamental to our social, professional, and romantic success—perhaps even more so than our clothing or our resumes. It explains how filled pauses benefit both speakers and listeners; how the use of “dude” can help people bond across social divides; why we’re always trying to make our intensifiers ever more intense; as well as many other language tics, habits, and developments. Language change is natural, built into the language system itself, and we wouldn’t be who we are without it. Like, Literally, Dude celebrates the dynamic, ongoing, and empowering evolution of language, and it will speak to anyone who talks, or listens, inspiring them to communicate dynamically and effectively in their daily lives.

Book The Sociopragmatics of Stance

Download or read book The Sociopragmatics of Stance written by Peter J. Grund and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anchored in historical pragmatics, historical sociolinguistics, and corpus linguistics, this book weaves together a powerful narrative of the significance of stance marking in the history of English. Focusing on the community of practice that developed during the witch trials in Salem (Massachusetts) in 1692–1693, it showcases how witnesses and the recorders of their ca. 450 depositions deployed linguistic features to signal the evaluation of experiences with alleged witchcraft, the intensification of those experiences, and the sources of the witnesses’ knowledge. The resulting stance profiles for groups of depositions, witnesses, and recorders highlight varying strategies of claiming, supporting, and boosting the importance of the evidence and the role of the witnesses within the community of practice. With its innovative focus on sociopragmatic variation in a historical community, the book demonstrates the essential contribution of synchronic-historical research to the analysis, description, and theorization of stance and historical English more broadly.

Book Sense and Sensitivity

Download or read book Sense and Sensitivity written by David I. Beaver and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-01-30 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sense and Sensitivity advances a novel research proposal in the nascent field of formal pragmatics, exploring in detail the semantics and pragmatics of focus in natural language discourse. The authors develop a new account of focus sensitivity, and show that what has hitherto been regarded as a uniform phenomenon in fact results from three different mechanisms. The book Makes a major contribution to ongoing research in the area of focus sensitivity – a field exploring interactions between sound and meaning, specifically the dependency some words have on the effects of focus, such as "she only LIKES me" (i.e. nothing deeper) compared to "she only likes ME" (i.e. nobody else) Discusses the features of the QFC theory (Quasi association, Free association, and Conventional association), a new account of focus implying a tripartite typology of focus-sensitive expressions Presents novel cross-linguistic data on focus and focus sensitivity that will be relevant across a range of linguistic sub-fields: semantics and pragmatics, syntax, and intonational phonology Concludes with a case study of exclusives (like “only”), arguing that the entire existing literature has missed crucial generalizations, and for the first time explaining the focus sensitivity of these expressions in terms of their meaning and discourse function
