Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Intension and Decision: A Philosophical Study In traditional logic and in most modern theories, a term is regarded as having one and only one intension just as it is regarded as having one and only one extension or designatum. This traditional point of view has obscured the important fact that there are many different kinds of intensions to be discriminated carefully from one another. Traditional theories have failed to make such discrimination in part because they provide no clear condition under which two intensions differ or are the same. Each term (of the proper kind) has a unique intension, according to those theories, but precisely how this intension differs from the intension of some other term is not clearly indicated. The intension of 'man' is supposed to differ from the intension of 'animal', but just how we are not told. Also intensions are usually regarded as in some sense sui generis, and hence how they involve (or consist of or are generated out of) other kinds of entities is not considered. It is not the deliberate aim of this book to discriminate as many kinds of intensions as possible. It will turn out, however, in the course of our inquiry that there are as a matter of fact many such kinds with of course some family resemblance. In particular there is the family of objective intensions, which depend only or at least primarily upon logical and semantical features of the language at hand. These are objective in the sense that they in no way involve the person (who uses the language) or a time. As contrasted with these there is the family of subjective intensions of terms, which depend not only upon logical features of the language but also upon the particular user or users of the terms as well as upon the time or times at which they are used. Within each family there are many branches, and indeed we shall find ourselves somewhat surprised at the plethora of kinds of intensions we shall encounter. Also we shall meet with entities which are very like intensions or which can be used to represent or mirror them for some purposes, but which are not in any proper sense intensions themselves. Such entities we shall call quasi-intensions. Here also there will be many types to distinguish, and the quasi-intensions will turn out to be every whit as important and interesting as intensions themselves. Book Action Decision and Intention

Download or read book Action Decision and Intention written by Robert Audi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the papers in this collection are contributions to action theory intended to be of some relevance to one or another concern of decision theory, particularly to its application to concrete human behavior. Some of the papers touch only indirectly on problems of interest to decision theorists, but taken together they should be of use to both decision theorists and philosophers of action. Robert Audi's paper indicates how a number of questions in action theory might bear on problems in decision theory, and it suggests how some action-theoretic results may help in the construction or interpretation of theories of decision, both normative and empirical. Carl Ginet's essay lays foundations for the conception of action. His volitional framework roots actions internally and conceives them as irreducibly connected with intentionality. Hugh McCann's essay is also foundational, but stresses intention more than volition and lays some of the groundwork for assessing the rationality of intention and intentional action. In William Alston's paper, the notion of a plan as underlying (intentional) action is central, and we are given both a con ception of the structure of intentional action and a set of implicit goals and beliefs - those whose content is represented in the plan - which form an indispensable part of the basis on which the rationality of the action is to be judged.

Book Stable Design Patterns for Software and Systems

Download or read book Stable Design Patterns for Software and Systems written by Mohamed Fayad and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-09-01 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attention to design patterns is unquestionably growing in software engineering because there is a strong belief that using made to measure solutions for solving frequently occurring problems encountered throughout the design phase greatly reduces the total cost and the time of developing software products. Stable Design Patterns for Software and Systems presents a new and fresh approach for creating stable, reusable, and widely applicable design patterns. It deals with the concept of stable design patterns based on software stability as a contemporary approach for building stable and highly reusable and widely applicable design patterns. This book shows that a formation approach to discovering and creating stable design patterns accords with Alexander’s current understanding of architectural patterns. Stable design patterns are a type of knowledge pattern that underline human problem solving methods and appeal to the pattern community. This book examines software design patterns with respect to four central themes: How do we develop a solution for the problem through software stability concepts? This book offers a direct application of using software stability concepts for modeling solutions. How do we achieve software stability over time and design patterns that are effective to use? What are the unique roles of stable design patterns in modeling the accurate solution of the problem at hand and in providing stable and undisputed design for such problems? This book enumerates a complete and domain-less list of stable patterns that are useful for designing and modeling solutions for frequently recurring problems. What is the most efficient way to document the stable design patters to ensure efficient reusability? This book is an extension to the contemporary templates that are used in documenting design patterns. This book gives a pragmatic and a novel approach toward understanding the problem domain and in proposing stable solutions for engineering stable software systems, components, and frameworks.

Download or read book The Logics of Preference written by N.J. Moutafakis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With characteristic incisiveness Georg Henrik von Wright identifies pro haireticIogic (i. e. the logic of preference) as the core of a general theory of value concepts. Essentially, this nucleus involves the logical study of acts from the point of view of their preferability. 1 (italics added) Though the term prohairesis is found in Plato, as well as in Aristotle's treatment of the relations of preference, it is von Wright who introduces this word into contemporary analytical philoso phy, and succinctly specifies the philosophical dimensions it encompasses. The above emphasis upon the philosophical study of the formalization of preferences is a matter of utmost importance for understanding the type of in quiry this investigation attempts to initiate. Over the past one hundred years the literature on general theories of subjective utility has become massive, where one considers the work done in psychometrics, econometrics, statistical theories, probability theories, etc., etc. Histories in these areas are strong in tracing various evolutions in the development of the concept of preference in decision-making. However, what has not been investigated with sustained at tention are the fundamentally philosophical inquiries into the formalization of preference-relations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It is not thought as such that can move anything, but thought which is for the sake of something and is practical." This discerning insight, which dates back more than 2000years to Aristotle, seems to have been ignored by most psycholo gists. For more than 40years theories of human action have assumed that cogni tion and action are merely two sides of the same coin. Approaches as different as S-O-R behaviorism, social learning theory, consistency theories, and expectancy value theories of motivation and decision making have one thing in common: they all assume that "thought (or any other type of cognition) can move any thing," that there is a direct path from cognition to behavior. In recent years, we have become more and more aware of the complexities in volved in the relationship between cognition and behavior. People do not always do what they intend to do. Aside from several nonpsychological factors capable of reducing cognition-behavior consistency, there seems to be a set of complex psychological mechanisms which intervene between action-related cognitions, such as beliefs, expectancies, values, and intentions, and the enactment of the be havior suggested by those cognitions. In our recent research we have focused on volitional mechanismus which presumably enhance cognition-behavior consistency by supporting the main tenance of activated intentions and prevent them from being pushed aside by competing action tendencies.

Book Intention Recognition Commitment and Their Roles in the Evolution of Cooperation

Download or read book Intention Recognition Commitment and Their Roles in the Evolution of Cooperation written by The Anh Han and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-11 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This original and timely monograph describes a unique self-contained excursion that reveals to the readers the roles of two basic cognitive abilities, i.e. intention recognition and arranging commitments, in the evolution of cooperative behavior. This book analyses intention recognition, an important ability that helps agents predict others’ behavior, in its artificial intelligence and evolutionary computational modeling aspects, and proposes a novel intention recognition method. Furthermore, the book presents a new framework for intention-based decision making and illustrates several ways in which an ability to recognize intentions of others can enhance a decision making process. By employing the new intention recognition method and the tools of evolutionary game theory, this book introduces computational models demonstrating that intention recognition promotes the emergence of cooperation within populations of self-regarding agents. Finally, the book describes how commitment provides a pathway to the evolution of cooperative behavior, and how it further empowers intention recognition, thereby leading to a combined improved strategy.

First published in 1957, it has acquired the status of a modern philosophical classic. The book attempts to show in detail that the natural and widely accepted picture of what we mean by an intention gives rise to insoluble problems and must be abandoned. This is a welcome reprint of a book that continues to grow in importance.
