Book Intense Pulsed Neutron Source IPNS I Accelerator Rf System

Download or read book Intense Pulsed Neutron Source IPNS I Accelerator Rf System written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rf equipment constructed for the IPNS-I accelerator system, formerly called the Zero Gradient Synchrotron (ZGS) Booster II, is described in this report. The accelerator is a first harmonic rapid cycling machine intended to accelerate 3 x 1012 protons from 50 MeV to 500 MeV, 30 times per second. The rf system produces a peak accelerating voltage of 22 kV over a 2.2 MHz to 5.3 MHz frequency band. Two single gap ferrite loaded cavities are located 180° around the accelerator and operated 180° out of phase to provide the desired voltage. High level equipment, low level subsystems and control equipment are covered as well as modifications incorporated after start-up.

This book was released on 1983 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rapid Cycling Synchrotron (RCS) of the Intense Pulsed Neutron Source (IPNS) operating at Argonne National Laboratory is presently producing intensities of 2 to 2.5 x 1012 protons per pulse (ppp) with the addition of a new ion source. This intensity is close to the space charge limit of the machine, estimated at approx. 3 x 1012 ppp, depending somewhat on the available aperture. Accelerator improvements are being directed at (1) increasing beam intensities for neutron science, (2) lowering acceleration losses to minimize activation, and (3) gaining better control of the beam so that losses can be made to occur when and where they can be most easily controlled. We are now proposing a third cavity for the RF system which would provide control of the longitudinal bunch shape during the cycle which would permit raising the effective space charge limit of the accelerator and reducing losses by providing more RF voltage at maximum acceleration. This paper presents an outline of the expected benefits together with recent results obtained during low energy operation with one of the two existing cavities operating at the second harmonic (2f0).

Book Bunch Stabilization Using Rf Phase Modulation in the Intense Pulse Neutron Source IPNS Rapid Cycling Synchrotron RCS

Download or read book Bunch Stabilization Using Rf Phase Modulation in the Intense Pulse Neutron Source IPNS Rapid Cycling Synchrotron RCS written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phase modulation (PM) is used to increase the current limit in the IPNS RCS. A device referred to as a scrambler introduces a small oscillating phase between the two RCS rf cavities at approximately twice the synchrotrons frequency, f{sub s}. The modulation introduced by the scrambler generates longitudinal oscillations in the bunch at 2f{sub s}. Modulations in the bunch are also observed transversely indicating a coupling between longitudinal and transverse motion. Comparing PM with amplitude modulation (AM), coupling to the beam is roughly equivalent at 2f{sub s}.

Book Reviews Of Accelerator Science And Technology Volume 6 Accelerators For High Intensity Beams

Download or read book Reviews Of Accelerator Science And Technology Volume 6 Accelerators For High Intensity Beams written by Alexander Wu Chao and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As particle accelerators strive forever increasing performance, high intensity particle beams become one of the critical demands requested across the board by a majority of accelerator users (proton, electron and ion) and for most applications. Much effort has been made by our community to pursue high intensity accelerator performance on a number of fronts. Recognizing its importance, we devote this volume to Accelerators for High Intensity Beams. High intensity accelerators have become a frontier and a network for innovation. They are responsible for many scientific discoveries and technological breakthroughs that have changed our way of life, often taken for granted. A wide range of topics is covered in the fourteen articles in this volume.
