Book excerpt: This paper analyses the intelligence requirements of German automotive companies for strategic decision-making in the context of the Chinese car industry. Moreover, it scrutinises the role of social capital in deriving decision-relevant insights from uncertain market conditions. The author pursues an exploratory approach by using semi-structured interviews with ten representatives of both original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and suppliers to derive insights into their information gathering and processing activities. The results show that the complexity induced by the confluence of megatrends such as shared driving and digitalisation places high demands on the intelligence processing capabilities of firms. The author finds that managers cope with these high demands by accessing a large variety of internal and external intelligence sources and by collaborating with other departments or external stakeholders. Additionally, the findings detail the importance of social capital in its regional variant Guanxi for the establishment and subsequent proper functioning of these work relationships. Lastly, the results indicate that hierarchies play an important role in strategic decision-making as top management generates insights via integration of the collected and processed intelligence. This thesis contributes to existing literature by investigating both contemporary strategy work and social capital use within the specific context of the Chinese automotive industry from a foreign perspective.

This simple statement breaks down the risks and opportunities for the German automotive supplier industry in China into two keywords. The first one is “big”: in the last decades, the eyes of the world’s automotive supplier industry have been directed to China, because it is promising to be the world’s biggest market soon. Given the fact that one fifth of mankind lives in China and its standard of living is rapidly improving, it is only a question of time until the promise becomes real. In addition to this enormous sales potential, the advantages of cheap labor and an improving level of technology and education show China’s attractive sourcing potential. The second one is “not easy”: exploiting this potential and taking part in the growth comes with a variety of challenges to the foreign suppliers: a completely different culture, a dynamic and highly competitive market and a political-legal system that favors its home industry over the foreigners – only to name a few. Although this paper is concerned with the German automotive suppliers in particular, it is inevitable to draw a complete picture of the country in general and the situation of the automotive manufacturers, which are in many areas the driving force behind the supplier’s activities. So the first chapters describe the market environment, progressing from the general to the specific and providing the framework necessary for the in-depth analysis of risks and opportunities. These are separated into internal and external aspects. Internal risks and opportunities derive from the weaknesses and strengths of a company itself. The external risks and opportunities in contrast can hardly be influenced by the suppliers as they are effects of the political and economical development. But the suppliers can develop strategies to adapt: using the opportunities and avoiding the risks! So, the aim of this paper is to show why China is such an important but difficult market for the German automotive suppliers and – as a conclusion – to give recommendations and strategies for being Successful in China. With economic problems like stagnating real income, rising raw material prices and credit-driven consumerism in the industrial countries the importance of the Chinese market for car companies will even grow. Saturated passenger car markets in the USA and Western Europe and low rates of motorization in new automotive markets like China focus the attention of the market participants on these new, growing markets. The focus of this study is on the passenger vehicle market and lines out why the Chinese market is profitable and attractive for international manufacturers. Moreover, it shows how to deal with the problems and how to use the opportunities regarding the dimensions of internationalization. Firstly, the PEST-Analysis of the Chinese automobile market lines out the political-legal, economic, socio-cultural and technological factors. In such a rapidly changing and growing as well as culturally completely different country like the PRC, the framework conditions and circumstances are of big importance for foreign enterprises willing to do business there. The third chapter deals with possible internationalization strategies for China by showing possibilities of timing and market development strategies plus options for locating business markets. This is also further established in the fourth chapter, in which the internationalization strategies of two German enterprises are analyzed. Furthermore the fourth chapter analyses the internationalization strategies of VW and BMW. At the end of this thesis, the results are summarized in two SWOT-analyses of both firms including measures on how to deal with threats in the PRC and on how to benefit from strengths and opportunities.

But the upward trend has already shown a downside. Increasing de-pendency on the strong politically influenced market and claims about know-how transfer are exemplary threats. As German enterprises in this industrial sector are popular worldwide and the car-industry is the key industry in our country, the internationalisation strategies of German automotive companies in China will be analysed in the following. The trend of the Chinese automobi-le market can be summarised in a quote of Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler: “Wir fahren noch nicht im höchsten Gang, wir können noch mehr”. The quote relates to the expected turnover and profit records of Daimler in 2011, which were mainly based on the success in the PRC: The Swabian vehicle manufacturer sold 198,500 automobiles in China. In spite of these difficulties, the automotive market in the PRC is very attractive, especially for the well-known German firms. However, the companies should know how to manage the problems in China. Therefore, the choice of a suitable strategy of internationalisation is crucial. By definition internationalisation strategy is the orientation of corporate development by growth in different foreign markets. In contrast to an international market entry strategy, an internationalisation strategy is not only about starting business in a foreign market, but also developing a strategy in a market which has already been entered. Book excerpt: The entry of China into the globalized world and onto the stage of the global automarket has presented auto manufacturers with the largest ever market opportunity. While global competitive forces drive firms to develop product innovation through their global supply chains, the approach of global auto manufacturers and their first tier suppliers has been to bring existing technology into China. Only recently has the supply chain in China become integrated into the global product innovation cycle. While innovations generated by supply channel relationships, as opposed to individual partners, are playing an increasingly important role in the success of all supply chain partners, there has been limited research in the literature on how supply chain relationships cultivate the process of such innovation generation, particularly in China. Correspondingly, this study explores how multinational suppliers can develop adaptive product innovation in order to create a sustainable competitive advantage in China and how the protection of their knowledge helps them sustain it. Drawing on the knowledge-based view and transaction cost economics, and integrating those with behavioural governance and the institution-based view this study identifies drivers of product innovation for MNC suppliers in their relationships with Chinese OEMs, investigates the influence of supplier involvement and knowledge protection on supplier product innovation and examines the outcomes in the specific context of the Chinese automotive industry from the first-tier supplier perspective. Survey results of 170 multinational automobile suppliers in China indicate support for most of the hypotheses. Specifically, knowledge protection is found to have an impact on product innovation in the context of the auto industry in China. Supplier involvement in co-design and co-development with an automotive OEM customer has an inverted U-shaped relationship with product innovation. Furthermore, trust and technological uncertainty are found to drive greater product innovation. In addition, the institutional environment moderates the effect of product innovation on performance. Overall, this study enhances the understanding of how MNC suppliers can acquire local knowledge, develop products adapted to the local market requirements and foster product innovation while retaining their knowledge and know-how and minimizing negative effects of spill-overs to the local competition in the automotive industry in China.

Sie enthält die bisherigen Projektergebnisse eine Forschungsprojekts, welches von der Kühne-Stiftung, Schweiz gefördert und in Kooperation mit der Tongi Universität Shanghai, China durchgeführt wird. Die Studie präsentiert die Ergebnisse einer langjährigen Analyse erfolgreicher westlicher Unternehmen im chinesischen Markt. Sie stellt aktuelle und zukünftige logistische Herausforderungen in Deutsch-Chinesischen Logistiknetzen dar und erarbeitet Gegenmaßnahmen. Book excerpt: Many western companies went East and started subsidiaries also in China to use large costs reduction potentials and to get new market shares at potential 1.3 billion customers. This hype was justified with the resulting success of the companies and the raise of China to the world's biggest economy. Starting new business in China is not only related with success and increasing profit, because before being successful, a functional factory has to be set up. This includes the setup of a suitable and efficient Quality Management System (QMS) and the according Knowledge transfer. This sounds easy, but not all of the enthusiastic firms made it through the built-up phase. This Study researches the theoretical background of Chinese business environment, according to the High Level Structure needs of the ISO 9001, and then compares the culture and also investigates the individual network system. This theoretical analysis is then merged with the quantitative and qualitative results of an expert survey, of German experts of companies with comparable industrial products and QMS. The result is that the cultural differences are big enough to be considered, when making the strategy plan. Especially hierarchical and group social differences make it necessary that the right people have to be prepared to be send to the subsidiary for a certain period. For the Quality topics, the focus should be on the freedom for process adjustments, content of inspection plans, audit strategies, supplier management and failure analysis. Here has to be created and trained a more sensitivity not only to push colleagues or suppliers, but also to develop them. Cost pressure makes it necessary to produce also more complex products in China, why the suppliers also have to be fit for this new challenge. In the end it can be said that the successful startup mainly depends on the right people, placed in higher hierarchical positions, who train the new colleagues on site continuously and with great patience.

It is a good summery for automation since 1970 for all who want to know about the context of automation developments and their standards. It is a fundamental summery and enables the reader to get experience in the complex field of automation. In detail the question is arised, whether Industry 4.0, China 2025, IoT, AI are a revolution or more an evolution of timewise established availbale technologies in HW, SW and algorithms. Is the hype about Industry 4.0 justified or not? In that context a timelline since 1970 ist shown for AI, ANN, essential milestones in automation, e.g OSI-model, automation pyramid, standards for bus systems, main SW-languages, robots, AI, ANN, pattern recognittion, Ethernet, the 12 most important international field busses, their main features and characterisitcs, foundation of committees, harmonization and standardization efforts, OPC UA and cloud computing, field devices, PLCs, SCADA, MES, ERP and automation history. All that history is seen in the context of μ-controller, DSP (Digital signal processor), FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays), ASICs (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit) , Chip on Board. It is include the HW-history, from Intel 8080 to octuple multicore processors. In the same way it is shown the history of field device out from laboratory into the field with all difficulties and benefits of that transition. The issues are summerized in a pyramid of complexity. Requirements for robustness and safety are shown for field devices. In the same way it is shown the development of mainframes, workstations and PC’s. SAP a leading ERP System is explained in mor detail. Specially it is figured out how SAP works and what has to be considered in working with such kind of system. The differences between MES- and ERP-systems are discussed, specially also for future combined SAP/MES systems. Explained are the problems of middlesized companies (SMEs) in dealing with Industry 4.0 and automation. Further examples are given and discussed for automized quality control in automotvie, PCB-handling, CIGS (Solar cell)-production. Also shown is the upgrade for older products and make them ready for automation standards. In detail the history oft he modern robotics is shown for the automotive industry. In summery also is figured out the Industry 5.0 which is just coming up more and more.
