Book excerpt: The robots are coming -- but they probably don't look anything like you expected... Artificial Intelligence (AI) is going to revolutionise your life. Will it cost you your job, or give you a new career? Will it isolate or liberate you? Will it lead us all into a new type of war, or save us all from sickness? The truth is that nobody knows, yet. But the AI revolution is fast approaching, and the world has little time to prepare. But prepare we must, because, as James Adams and Richard Kletter explain in Artificial Intelligence: Confronting the Revolution, what mankind has set in motion cannot now be undone -- and it's going to change everything. In this ground-breaking work, Adams and Kletter clearly explain the potential and likely ramifications of AI. They show how ill-prepared we are for the forthcoming 'fourth industrial revolution' and look at how human beings might fare as it unfolds. Meticulously researched and extensively referenced, this guidebook to the brave new world is written by two highly credible authors, who use all of their experience, insight and contacts to give readers a privileged look into that which is to come. This is surely a 'must read' for anybody who takes an interest in current affairs and social history, as well as those with an interest in technology. James Adams is a former Sunday Times journalist and entrepreneur and a former Board Member of the National Security Agency who has worked with the CIA and the White House on issues including cyber security, warfare (including cyber warfare), espionage and terrorism. Richard Kletter has been a Research Associate at Stanford focused on new communications technology, an adjunct professor at USC where he consults for the DOD lab, The Institute For Creative Technology. Book excerpt: The Evolution Arti?cielle cycle of conferences was originally initiated as a forum for the French-speaking evolutionary computation community. Previous EA m- tings were held in Toulouse (EA’94), Brest (EA’95, LNCS 1063), Nˆ?mes (EA’97, LNCS 1363), Dunkerque (EA’99, LNCS 1829), and ?nally, EA 2001 was hosted by the Universit ́e de Bourgogne in the small town of Le Creusot, in an area of France renowned for its excellent wines. However, the EA conferences have been receiving more and more papers from the international community: this conference can be considered fully internat- nal, with 39submissions from non-francophonic countries on all ?ve continents, out of a total of 68. Out of these 68 papers, only 28 were presented orally (41%) due to the formula of the conference (single session with presentations of 30 minutes) that all participants seem to appreciate a lot. The Organizing Committee wishes to thank the members of the International Program Committee for their hard work (mainly due to the large number of submissions) and for the service they rendered to the community by ensuring the high scienti?c content of the papers presented. Actually, the overall quality of the papers presented was very high and all 28 presentations are included in this volume, grouped in 8 sections which more or less re?ect the organization of the oral session: 1. Invited Paper: P. Bentley gave a great talk on his classi?cation of int- disciplinary collaborations, and showed us some of his work with musicians and biologists.

Book Artificial Intelligence

Download or read book Artificial Intelligence written by Saswat Sarangi and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What will the future be? A dystopian landscape controlled by machines or a brave new world full of possibilities? Perhaps the answer lies with Artificial Intelligence (AI)—a phenomenon much beyond technology that has, continues to, and will shape lives in ways we do not understand yet. This book traces the evolution of AI in contemporary history. It analyses how AI is primarily being driven by "capital" as the only "factor of production" and its consequences for the global political economy. It further explores the dystopian prospect of mass unemployment by AI and takes up the ethical aspects of AI and its possible use in undermining natural and fundamental rights. A tract for the times, this volume will be a major intervention in an area that is heavily debated but rarely understood. It will be essential reading for researchers and students of digital humanities, politics, economics, science and technology studies, physics, and computer science. It will also be key reading for policy makers, cyber experts and bureaucrats.

Book A Guided Tour of Artificial Intelligence Research

Download or read book A Guided Tour of Artificial Intelligence Research written by Pierre Marquis and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-05-08 with total page 808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to provide an overview of AI research, ranging from basic work to interfaces and applications, with as much emphasis on results as on current issues. It is aimed at an audience of master students and Ph.D. students, and can be of interest as well for researchers and engineers who want to know more about AI. The book is split into three volumes: - the first volume brings together twenty-three chapters dealing with the foundations of knowledge representation and the formalization of reasoning and learning (Volume 1. Knowledge representation, reasoning and learning) - the second volume offers a view of AI, in fourteen chapters, from the side of the algorithms (Volume 2. AI Algorithms) - the third volume, composed of sixteen chapters, describes the main interfaces and applications of AI (Volume 3. Interfaces and applications of AI). Implementing reasoning or decision making processes requires an appropriate representation of the pieces of information to be exploited. This first volume starts with a historical chapter sketching the slow emergence of building blocks of AI along centuries. Then the volume provides an organized overview of different logical, numerical, or graphical representation formalisms able to handle incomplete information, rules having exceptions, probabilistic and possibilistic uncertainty (and beyond), as well as taxonomies, time, space, preferences, norms, causality, and even trust and emotions among agents. Different types of reasoning, beyond classical deduction, are surveyed including nonmonotonic reasoning, belief revision, updating, information fusion, reasoning based on similarity (case-based, interpolative, or analogical), as well as reasoning about actions, reasoning about ontologies (description logics), argumentation, and negotiation or persuasion between agents. Three chapters deal with decision making, be it multiple criteria, collective, or under uncertainty. Two chapters cover statistical computational learning and reinforcement learning (other machine learning topics are covered in Volume 2). Chapters on diagnosis and supervision, validation and explanation, and knowledge base acquisition complete the volume.

Book excerpt: We are currently experiencing more than the Fourth Industrial Revolution: a Multiverse Revolution is profoundly changing everyday life for businesses and citizens. The dazzling progress of artificial intelligence, the metaverse and digital twins is pushing back the frontiers of possibilities in fields as diverse as advanced medicine, the conquest of space, smart cities, quantum computing and ecological transition. Although the advent of the Internet and Web 2.0 coincided with the digitalization of our lives, the Multiverse Revolution is reversing this trend. New simulation software can help our societies make the world a more sustainable place, expand the field of knowledge and optimize resource management. At the confluence of the digital sphere and the physical universe, these innovations can play a pivotal role in the real world. If the right choices and investments are made, Europe can become a leader in this paradigm shift. It has an opportunity to provide an alternative to Chinese and American tech models by focusing on clean energy, health, education and people's well-being. Today, issues of sovereignty and strategic autonomy are of crucial importance. There is an urgent need to accelerate progress in these areas in order to improve not only the competitiveness of our economy but also the daily lives of European citizens.Translated from French by Laurie Hurwitz.

Book Industry 4 0

Download or read book Industry 4 0 written by Jean-Claude André and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-07-10 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital technology opens up extraordinary fields for applications that will deeply change the nature of jobs and trade, the very concept of work and the expectations of user–producers. The “masters of algorithms” have disrupted production and services, and this trend will continue for as long as electric energy and the elements of Industry 4.0 are in continued development. Beyond data control, a power struggle is working its way through the links in the value chain: intermediation, control of resources and command over human and physical networks, as well as partnerships, creativity and the political system. Industry 4.0: Paradoxes and Conflicts examines the need for a serious and technological review, as well as for research and training regarding citizenship and politics. This is a new situation in terms of relationships of competence and authority, which must be the subject of scientific as well as political reflections for the whole social body, which needs to be educated about choices. Throughout the book, the author poses the following question: instead of submitting to choices, would it not be better to exercise foresight?
