Book excerpt: This paper is an attempt to measure and evaluate voluntary Intellectual Capital (IC) disclosures made by Indian pharmaceutical and software companies in their annual report. The research technique called content analysis has been used to measure the extent and nature of disclosure in 24 sample companies across the two industries with the help of certain criteria identified in the form of 18 IC indicators across three broad categories, viz., structural capital elements, relational capital elements and human capital elements. From the study, it can be inferred that most of the reported IC attributes are expressed in discursive rather than numerical or monetary terms. The IC disclosure made by the sample companies does not adequately fulfil the informational needs of stakeholders, and hence companies need to disclose more meaningful information in their annual reports or in separate IC reports.

One of it is that traditional accounting and reporting practices couldn't explain the exact status of the business because of increasing importance of intangible assets rather than tangible. As an evidence for this, researchers have identified the growing disparity between book value and market value of the company. Hence, this paper is an effort to identify the determinant of Intellectual capital disclosure which is firm-specific in Indian context. As far IC concerned, it possesses a vital role because of as said before increasing disparity between market value and book value of companies. Literature are saying IC can explain or at least can reduce this disparity. This study has chosen leading pharmaceutical companies included in Pharma sector. For this study, annual reports of a sample of 10 companies from NSE Pharma Index are analyzed over a three-year period from 2015-2017. Content analysis has been applied to calculate Intellectual Capital Disclosure score and Regression models are used to examine the relationship between IC disclosure and the selected variables. Results reveal that IC disclosure in Indian pharmaceutical sector is increasing year by year. While considering multiple regression analysis, the age of the company and number of independent directors are showing a significant positive relationship with Intellectual Capital disclosure. In other hand, variables such as value added intellectual coefficient (VAIC) and leverage, size of the firm and profitability are showing an insignificant relationship with IC disclosure.

Book excerpt: Objective: This is an exploratory study, which focuses on two issues: (a) mapping the current state of intellectual capital (IC) reporting scenario, and (b) attempt to measure the value of IC by the selected 8 companies in the Indian pharmaceutical industry during the 5 financial years.Methods: The Modified Intangible Assets Monitor is used to capture the reporting of elements of the IC framework. The technique used for calculation of reporting index is content analysis applying the five-point rating scale.Results: The findings show that, on an average, the sample companies reported a positive value of IC; significant correlation has been noticed between tangible assets (TA) and net operating profits (NOP). However, no significant difference was found between percentage of IC to MV, and per cent of TA to MV. The study finds wide-disparity, low-level, and purely voluntary nature of the ICR made by the selected companies. But as expected, IC reporting are very low and substantially differs across these companies. First three top ICR scorers were: Dr. Reddy's, Aventis Pharma and Aurbindo; they get first, second and third ranks.Conclusion: The IC reporting done by the sample companies does not adequately fulfill the information needs of stakeholders, and hence companies need to report more meaningful information in their annual reports or in separate IC Reports. Furthermore, the above analysis reveals that the IC Reporting among Indian pharmaceutical companies is very low. It is recommend to the international accounting bodies, to take the lead by establishing a harmonized ICR standard, and provide guidance to the big listed.

Content analysis technique was used to analyse intellectual capital reporting among the top 15 pharmaceutical companies in India. The analysis was done using the annual reports of these pharmaceutical companies for the year 2011-12. The analysis reveals that the intellectual capital reporting among Indian pharmaceutical companies is very low.

Book excerpt: This study analyzes the impact of the revision of the Indian Patent Act (2005) on the Indian pharmaceutical industry, which has been achieving healthy growth over the past 30 to 40 years or more. As of 2005, the Indian pharmaceutical industry was ranked as No. 4 in the world in terms of volume and 15th in terms of value. WTO/TRIPS required India to revise its patent law, however, and to introduce product patents in the pharmaceutical field. Many not only in India but also in the world had argued that the local pharmaceutical industry could deteriorate once a strong patent law (such as a product patent) was introduced. However, the Indian pharmaceutical industry has continued to develop rapidly even after the revision of the patent law in 2005. This present study started with efforts to work out the reason the Indian pharmaceutical industry successfully expanded even after the introduction of product patents. The study found that a unique article (the so-called '3-d‘) inserted in the Patent Act 2005 might have played a role in diminishing or preventing a negative impact from the introduction of a strong patent system, such as a product patents. The study also considers that a change of the business model adopted by the Indian pharmaceutical industry might have contributed to diminishing the effect of the negative impact from the introduction of a strong patent law. This study also covers recent developments in India regarding intellectual property rights and the pharmaceutical industry. One is India’s very first compulsory license granted to an Indian pharmaceutical company, Natco, against the large German pharmaceutical firm Bayer; and the second is the Supreme Court decision on Novartis’ Gleevec. The study analyzes the fundamental problems that caused these two events: access to medicine and gaps in the concept of intellectual property in the pharmaceutical industry. As possible solutions to these fundamental issues, this book explores the ideas of voluntary licensing and tiered pricing.

Total medical expenditures are rapidly approaching 20 percent of the gross domestic product and are crowding out other priorities of national importance. The use of increasingly expensive prescription drugs is a significant part of this problem, making the cost of biopharmaceuticals a serious national concern with broad political implications. Especially with the highly visible and very large price increases for prescription drugs that have occurred in recent years, finding a way to make prescription medicinesâ€"and health care at largeâ€"more affordable for everyone has become a socioeconomic imperative. Affordability is a complex function of factors, including not just the prices of the drugs themselves, but also the details of an individual's insurance coverage and the number of medical conditions that an individual or family confronts. Therefore, any solution to the affordability issue will require considering all of these factors together.
