Book excerpt: This book is a thought provoking challenge for the Believer of their accepted faith. The mass majority of the world believes in a higher being but that Being is viewed and worshiped in various different ways. The author delves into an intelligent discussion regarding one question. That question is "Why do we believe in the faith that we follow?" What influence made us followers of Christianity, Judaism or Islam? Focusing on the three Major Abrahamic Religions, he pushes the reader to reason, critically think and question their belief system. Is Jesus Christ God or the son of God? Is he believed to be the false Messiah like those who follow Judaism? Did He die for our sins like the Christians believe, and is the Prophet Muhammad the last and final Prophet like the belief of the Muslims; or is he the anti-christ like the world of Christianity depicts him to be? The once Christian, then agnostic and now Muslim convert, takes us through his journey of comparative religion and final acceptance of Islam.

Download or read book Rational Belief written by Robert Audi and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rational Belief provides conceptions of belief and knowledge, offers a theory of how they are grounded, and connects them with the will and thereby with action, moral responsibility, and intellectual virtue. A unifying element is a commitment to representing epistemology-which is centrally concerned with belief-as integrated with a plausible philosophy of mind that does justice both to the nature of belief and to the conditions for its formation and regulation. Part One centers on belief and its relation to the will. It explores our control of our beliefs, and it describes several forms belief may take and shows how beliefs are connected with the world outside the mind. Part Two concerns normative aspects of epistemology, explores the nature of intellectual virtue, and presents a theory of moral perception. The book also offers a theory of the grounds of both justification and knowledge and shows how these grounds bear on the self-evident. Rationality is distinguished from justification; each clarified in relation to the other; and the epistemological importance of the phenomenal-for instance, of intuitional experience and other "private" aspects of mental life-is explored. The final section addresses social epistemology. It offers a theory of testimony as essential in human knowledge and a related account of the rational resolution of disagreements.

Download or read book The God Conclusion written by I. W. Brown and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-09 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is an all too familiar path. A young person leaves home for college. He still believes in God and likely believes in the particular faith of his family. Then the deconversion begins. By the time he earns an undergraduate degree not only has he discarded the faith of his family, he has abandoned belief in God altogether. In fact, he looks back at his family and those who continue to believe in wonder. How can they still believe? It is a fact that the more education a person receives the more likely she is to become an atheist. A recent study also found that average intelligence is an excellent predictor of rates of atheism. That is, the higher the intelligence, the higher the rate of non-belief.It is natural to assume that intelligence and education give us a firmer grip on truth. Doesn't it make sense then that the individual who replaces faith with skepticism and disbelief is headed in the right direction? Shouldn't we conclude that this person is drawing closer to truth?Absolutely not!Having abandoned faith himself by the end of graduate school, author IW Brown then spent years examining the very best arguments for and against God's existence. In The God Conclusion: Why Smart People Still Believe, Brown makes a powerful case that the most educated and intellectual among us are often the furthest from the truth about God. They most certainly don't enjoy any advantage over the less educated when striving to understand existence and the transcendent. Vocal advocates of atheism regularly boast that the brainiest among us are non-believers. Contrary to what they would suggest, however, there is no reason to defer to the experts in science, philosophy, or academia when it comes to the God Question. The God Conclusion dispels the notion that intelligence and learning should lead to disbelief. It describes how and why rational, well-informed people still have reason to believe in God. If you or someone you know struggles to maintain faith in God in the face of the wisdom of the world, The God Conclusion is for you!

Book Islam and the Destiny of Man

Download or read book Islam and the Destiny of Man written by Charles Le Gai Eaton and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1985-09-30 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islam and the Destiny of Man by Charles Le Gai Eaton is a wide-ranging study of the Muslim religion from a unique point of view. The author, a former member of the British Diplomatic Service, was brought up as an agnostic and embraced Islam at an early age after writing a book (commissioned by T.S. Eliot) on Eastern religions and their influence upon Western thinkers. As a Muslim he has retained his adherence to the perennial philosophy which, he maintains, underlies the teachings of all the great religions. The aim of this book is to explore what it means to be a Muslim, a member of a community which embraces a quarter of the world’s population and to describe the forces which have shaped the hearts and the minds of Islamic people. After considering the historic confrontation between Islam and Christendom and analysing the difference between the three monotheistic faiths (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam), the author describes the two poles of Muslim belief in terms of ‘Truth’ and ‘Mercy’—the unitarian truth which is the basis of the Muslim’s faith and the mercy inherent in this truth. In the second part of the book he explains the significance of the Qur’an and tells the dramatic story of Muhammad’s life and of the early Caliphate. Lastly, the author considers the Muslim view of man’s destiny, the social structure of Islam, the role of art and mysticism and the inner meaning of Islamic teaching concerning the hereafter. Throughout this book the author is concerned not with the religion of Islam in isolation, but with the very nature of religious faith, its spiritual and intellectual foundations, and the light it casts upon the mysteries and paradoxes of the human condition.

Book Kierkegaard on Intellect and Faith a Critical Study

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction In the great theistic world-religions, notably Christianity, Judaism and Islam, religious faith is closely tied to God. To speak of faith for a member of one of these religions is to speak primarily of faith in God. This of course does not solve our problem, but merely introduces a new question: what does it mean to have faith in God? Minimally, it might mean faith that God exists. Certainly many discussions in the philosophy of religion focus on belief in God, as a belief that there is a God. It is worth noting that faith in God, as it is understood in the Bible, is never understood merely as belief that God exists. It is also trust and obedience. Any way, how a person can obtains such a faith in the today's world? We do not live in the same world as the people of Biblical times. Then, there is the new question in the mind of thinkers of Christian world: Can we base the faith on intellect? Is the rational justification of religious belief possible? The history of Christian theology and philosophy shows that there have been Great masters, who thought about the question of the relation between faith and intellect. In twentieth century Bertrand Russell claims that religious belief would only be appropriate if it were based on sufficient evidence, and that no such evidence is available. But John Locke thinks some religious truths are knowable by intellect. Kant had attempted to develop a religion within the limits of reason alone, in which the essential tenets of Christian faith could be derived from practical reason. Hegel had constructed a,

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lived faith involves doctrines, evidences and rational coherence—but it includes much more. Philosopher Clifford Williams puts forth an argument as to why certain needs, desires and emotions have a legitimate place in drawing people into faith in God. Addressing the strongest objections to these types of grounds for faith, he shows how the personal and experiential aspects of belief play an important part in coming to faith and in remaining a believing person.
