Book Monitoring and Counteracting Functional Deterioration in Parkinson s Disease A Multilevel Integrative Approach in a Primate Model System

Download or read book Monitoring and Counteracting Functional Deterioration in Parkinson s Disease A Multilevel Integrative Approach in a Primate Model System written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is still largely unknown what the general course is in the progression of Parkinson's disease (PD). Presumably more than one factor is responsible. There is evidence suggesting that metabolic compromise, excitotoxicity and oxidative stress are involved in the neurodegenerative process causing PD. To investigate the connection of excitotoxicity and oxidative stress with metabolic compromise in the development of the disease, anti-excitotoxic treatment with riluzole and anti-oxidant treatment with EGCG will be compared to untreated controls and to a standard treatment with L-DOPA in a MPTP induced Parkinson model. We hypothesize that critical changes indicating the nature of the gradual patho-physiological changes leading to PD will be revealed if anti-oxidants or anti-excitatory treatments are given in a situation where the brain is susceptible to develop PD. The comparison, of the results on the different levels of research, between the neuroprotective regimes and the symptom control drug L-DOPA will give insight in the relative role of the different markers for neuroprotection and behavioral output. In particular relatively new technologies such as differential proteomics and sleep research will yield novel insights. In this report period new test methods were developed, the use of brain imaging or neurophysiology was validated and the dose range finding of the test compounds was performed. The highest sign-free dose will be used in the neuroprotective experiments.

Bush involving the NIH and NIMH "to enhance public awareness of the benefits to be derived from brain research"(1). Book The Cognitive Neuropsychiatry of Parkinson s Disease

Download or read book The Cognitive Neuropsychiatry of Parkinson s Disease written by Patrick McNamara and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed examination of the major neuropsychiatric syndromes of Parkinson's disease and a cognitive theory that accounts for their neurology and phenomenology. Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) suffer most visibly with such motor deficits as tremor and rigidity and less obviously with a range of nonmotor symptoms, including autonomic dysfunction, mood disorders, and cognitive impairment. The neuropsychiatric disturbances of PD can be as disabling as its motor disorders; but they have only recently begun to be studied intensively by clinicians and scientists. In this book, Patrick McNamara examines the major neuropsychiatric syndromes of PD in detail and offers a cognitive theory that accounts for both their neurology and their phenomenology. McNamara offers an up-to-date review of current knowledge of such neuropsychiatric manifestations of PD as cognitive deficits, personality changes, speech and language symptoms, sleep disorders, apathy, psychosis, and dementia. He argues that the cognitive, mood, and personality symptoms of PD stem from the weakening or suppression of the agentic aspects of the self. McNamara's study may well lead to improved treatment for Parkinson's patients. But its overarching goal is to arrive at a better understanding of the human mind and its breakdown patterns in patients with PD. The human mind-brain is an elaborate and complex structure patched together to produce what we call the self. When we observe the disruption of the self structure that occurs with the various neuropsychiatric disorders associated with PD, McNamara argues, we get a glimpse into the inner workings of the most spectacular structure of the self: the agentic self, the self that acts.

Book Ending Parkinson s Disease

Book Parkinson s Disease Management through ICT

Download or read book Parkinson s Disease Management through ICT written by Joan Cabestany and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-09-01 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that manifests with motor and non-motor symptoms. PD treatment is symptomatic and tries to alleviate the associated symptoms through an adjustment of the medication. As the disease is evolving and this evolution is patient specific, it could be very difficult to properly manage the disease. The current available technology (electronics, communication, computing, etc.), correctly combined with wearables, can be of great use for obtaining and processing useful information for both clinicians and patients allowing them to become actively involved in their condition.Parkinson's Disease Management through ICT: The REMPARK Approach presents the work done, main results and conclusions of the REMPARK project (2011 – 2015) funded by the European Union under contract FP7-ICT-2011-7-287677. REMPARK system was proposed and developed as a real Personal Health Device for the Remote and Autonomous Management of Parkinson’s Disease, composed of different levels of interaction with the patient, clinician and carers, and integrating a set of interconnected sub-systems: sensor, auditory cueing, Smartphone and server. The sensor subsystem, using embedded algorithmics, is able to detect the motor symptoms associated with PD in real time. This information, sent through the Smartphone to the REMPARK server, is used for an efficient management of the disease.

  • ISBN : 0190051620
  • Pages : 464 pages

Download or read book Integrative Neurology written by John W. McBurney and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-19 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dementia, Parkinson's Disease, headache, and neuropathy are all conditions for which narrowly focused medical interventions all too often fall short. The first book in its field, Integrative Neurology synthesizes complementary modalities with state-of-the-art medical treatment to offer a new vision for neurological care. The authors begin by looking inward at the crisis of stress and burnout that confronts all of medicine, but neurology in particular. It goes on to provide a selective yet in-depth review of important topics in neurological practice from the perspective of integrative medicine. Taking an evidence based approach throughout, chapters cover chronic diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis, Dementia, and Parkinson's Disease. The volume also address clinical issues such as headache, traumatic brain injury, navigating the endocannabinoid system and aging, nutrition and stroke, neuropathy, toxins and neurodevelopment, as well as the modalities of Ayurvedic Medicine and acupuncture. Integrative medicine is defined as a healing-oriented medicine that takes account of the whole person (body, mind, and spirit) as well as all aspects of lifestyle. It emphasizes the therapeutic relationship and makes use of appropriate therapies, both conventional and alternative. Series editor Andrew Weil, MD is Professor and Director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona. Dr. Weil's program was the first such academic program in the US, and its stated goal is "to combine the best ideas and practice of conventional and alternative medicine into cost effective treatments without embracing alternative practices uncritically."
