Download or read book Ichnoentomology written by Jorge Fernando Genise and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-31 with total page 707 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the ichnology of insects, and associated trace fossils, in soils and paleosols. The traces described here, mostly nests and pupation chambers, include one of the most complex architectures produced by animals. Chapters explore the walls, shapes and fillings of trace fossils followed by their classifications and ichnotaxonomy. Detailed descriptions and interpretations for different groups of insects like bees, ants, termites, dung beetles and wasps are also provided. Chapters also highlight the the paleoenvironmental significance of insect trace fossils in paleosols for paleontological reconstructions, sedimentological interpretation, and ichnofabrics analysis. Readers will discover how insect trace fossils act as physical evidence for reconstructing the evolution of behavior, phylogenies, past geographical distributions, and to know how insects achieved some of the more complex architectures. The book will appeal to researchers and graduate students in ichnology, sedimentology, paleopedology, and entomology and readers interested in insect architecture.

Download or read book Ichnology written by Luis A. Buatois and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-08-11 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ichnology is the study of traces created in the substrate by living organisms. This is the first book to systematically cover basic concepts and applications in both paleobiology and sedimentology, bridging the gap between the two main facets of the field. It emphasizes the importance of understanding ecologic controls on benthic fauna distribution and the role of burrowing organisms in changing their environments. A detailed analysis of the ichnology of a range of depositional environments is presented using examples from the Precambrian to the recent, and the use of trace fossils in facies analysis and sequence stratigraphy is discussed. The potential for biogenic structures to provide valuable information and solve problems in a wide range of fields is also highlighted. An invaluable resource for researchers and graduate students in paleontology, sedimentology and sequence stratigraphy, this book will also be of interest to industry professionals working in petroleum geoscience.

Book Integrated Ichnology Sedimentology and Stratigraphy of the Lower Cretaceous Grand Rapids Formation and Equivalents East central Alberta

Download or read book Integrated Ichnology Sedimentology and Stratigraphy of the Lower Cretaceous Grand Rapids Formation and Equivalents East central Alberta written by Cameron Thompson and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uppermost parasequences of the Grand Rapids Formation and Upper Mannville Group record progradation of open-coast wave/storm-dominated deltas in the west, passing eastward into brackish-water bay-head deltas. Distributary channel deposits occur in close proximity to both settings. Stratigraphic cross-sections indicate that autocyclic delta lobe switching occurred in both delta types. Open-coast deltas contain low-diversity trace fossil suites consisting of slightly more robust ichnogenera, most of whom reflect opportunistic colonization of storm beds. Ichnogenera typical of more marine conditions are sporadically distributed, indicating that environments were not as persistently salinity stressed as in the east. Bay-head deltas in brackish-water settings display the lowest trace fossil diversities and pronounced size reductions. Facies lack ichnogenera associated with more marine conditions. Brackish-bay deposits are the most intensely burrowed, attesting to low deposition rates. Ichnological diversities are slightly greater than in bay-head delta deposits, reflecting less marked salinity fluctuations in persistently brackish-water conditions.

Book Atlas of Trace Fossils in Well Core

Download or read book Atlas of Trace Fossils in Well Core written by Dirk Knaust and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-21 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides readers with a well-balanced blend of high-quality photographs, figures and accompanying texts on the identification of trace fossils, both in core and in outcrop. Ichnological data has become increasingly important in sedimentological and paleoenvironmental interpretations, not only in the exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbons but also in the characterization of aquifers and in scientific drilling. Following an introduction to the study of trace fossils in core and an outline of ichnological basics, principles and concepts, the book provides detailed descriptions and interpretations of 39 trace fossils (ichnogenera) and associated features (such as bioturbate texture, plant roots and their traces, borings and pseudo-trace fossils) commonly encountered in well cores and in outcrop. The trace fossils are highlighted by their expression in well cores and illustrated with carefully prepared, eye-catching core photographs. This unique information is complemented by examples of trace fossils in outcrop, as well as relevant key figures from the literature. Each description is presented in a consistent manner, stating the ichnogenus name and author in the title, followed by sections on the morphology and size, ichnotaxonomy, substrate, appearance in core, similar trace fossils, producers, ethology, depositional environment, ichnofacies, age, and reservoir quality. An extensive list of references per chapter for further reading rounds out the book, which is based on the author’s continuous work with trace fossils in core over the past two decades.

Book Ichnology in Shallow marine and Transitional Environments

Download or read book Ichnology in Shallow marine and Transitional Environments written by C. Cónsole-Gonella and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2023-06-06 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ichnology of shallow-marine to transitional environments is a key field of study with respect to understanding the variability of environmental parameters from inshore marginal-marine settings to the offshore transition zone. Over the last decades ichnology has evolved from being a tool to determine bathymetry, becoming the standard palaeoenvironmental methodology by which trace fossils can be used to inform sedimentary facies models. In particular, the analysis of mixed assemblages of invertebrate and vertebrate trace fossils allows detailed palaeoenvironmental and facies analysis. This volume focuses on the ichnological record of shallow-marine to transitional environments through the geological record, in addition to modern ones through neoichnology.

Book Principles of Tidal Sedimentology

Download or read book Principles of Tidal Sedimentology written by Richard A. Davis Jr. and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-20 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive, contemporary review of tidal environments and deposits. Individual chapters, each written by world-class experts, cover the full spectrum of coastal, shallow-marine and even deep-marine settings where tidal action influences or controls sediment movement and deposition. Both siliciclastic and carbonate deposits are covered. Various chapters examine the dynamics of sediment transport by tides, and the morphodynamics of tidal systems. Several chapters explore the occurrence of tidal deposits in the stratigraphic context of entire sedimentary basins. This book is essential reading for both coastal geologists and managers, and geologists interested in extracting hydrocarbons from complex tidal successions.

Book Integrated Ichnology and Sedimentology of Mixed River and Wave influenced Delta Complexes Upper Cretaceous Basal Belly River Formation Central Alberta Canada

Download or read book Integrated Ichnology and Sedimentology of Mixed River and Wave influenced Delta Complexes Upper Cretaceous Basal Belly River Formation Central Alberta Canada written by Brittan Miles Jones and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine-generated bounding discontinuities subdivide the basal Belly River cycles into 3 allomembers (D, E, and G). Detailed sedimentological and ichnological analysis of allomembers D and E of the Upper Cretaceous basal Belly River Formation (central Alberta) reveals 13 discrete facies. Sedimentary facies are grouped into 6 mappable facies associations. Depositional environments are interpreted to record a variety of marginal-marine, paralic, and coastal environments, including: river-dominated, storm-influenced deltas (FA1); storm-dominated, mixed river- and wave-influenced deltas (FA2); fluvial channels (FA3); fluvio-estuarine distributary channels (FA4); marine-influenced, lower delta plains (FA5); and delta/coastal plains (FA6). Based on the integration of data from cored intervals, multiple dip- and strike oriented cross-sections, and net-sand isopach maps; no lateral variations in facies distribution, consistent with the asymmetric delta model, are identified. Correlations indicate that the deposits of Allomember D are exclusively linked to FA1 successions, whereas the deposits of Allomember E are exclusively linked to FA2 successions.
