Download or read book Compatible Forest Management written by Robert A. Monserud and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003-09-30 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public debate has stimulated interest in finding greater compatibility among forest management regimes. The debate has often portrayed management choices as tradeoffs between biophysical and socioeconomic components of ecosystems. Here we focus on specific management strategies and emphasize broad goals such as biodiversity, wood production and habitat conservation while maintaining other values from forestlands desired by the public. We examine the following proposition: Commodity production (timber, nontimber forest products) and the other forest values (biodiversity, fish and wildlife habitat) can be simultaneously produced from the same area in a socially acceptable manner. Based on recent research in the Pacific Northwest, we show there are alternatives for managing forest ecosystems that avoid the divisive arena of 'either-or' choices. Much of the work discussed in this book addresses two aspects of the compatibility issue. First, how are various forest management practices related to an array of associated goods and services? Second, how do different approaches to forest management affect relatively large and complex ecosystems?

Book Conserving Forest Diversity through Ecosystem Management

Download or read book Conserving Forest Diversity through Ecosystem Management written by David R. Patton and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2019-08-19 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forestry, wildlife, and other natural-resource professionals manage ecosystems. Ecosystems bring together diversity in a way that considers all life-forms within a unified system. Patton, Fox, and Bailey present introductory students with an integrated, balanced approach to ecosystem management based on the concept of diversity—a natural phenomenon of life with different levels of recognition that can change over time and space. Applying decades of teaching, research, and management experience, the authors introduce readers to each major life-form. Sections on significant forces that have shaped our landscape and how it is managed orient students in the field. Insightful approaches to the planning process are highlighted. Specific instruction on effective management practices includes inventory design, decision support system development, and database organization. Carefully curated library recommendations and appendices comprised of invaluable data sets prepare readers to navigate an extremely complex planning environment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing ecological challenges ranging from wildland fires to climate change have revived interest in moving the Dept. of Agriculture's (USDA) Forest Service into the Dept. of the Interior. The Forest Service manages almost a quarter of the nation's lands but is the only major land mgmt. agency outside Interior. This is a report on the potential effects of moving the Forest Service into Interior and creating a new bureau equal to Interior's other bureaus, such as the Bureau of Land Mgmt. (BLM). This report identifies factors that should be considered if such a move were legislated and mgmt. practices that could facilitate a move. Nazzaro analyzed five historical proposals to reorganize fed. land mgmt. agencies. Illustrations.
