Book A Case Study of the Integration of Environmental Learning in the Primary School Curriculum

Download or read book A Case Study of the Integration of Environmental Learning in the Primary School Curriculum written by Mmahlomotse Sekinah Sehlola and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In line with international developments, the Department of Education in South Africa (SA) recognises environmental education as a key vehicle to respond to the national and global environmental crisis (DoE, 2001, P. 3). For this reason, the post-1994 education provision sought to infuse environmental education into the new curriculum called Curriculum 2005. The White Paper on Education and Training (RSA, 1995) perceived environmental education as a means to a better quality of life for all people and argued that it should be integrated at all levels of the SA Education and Training system. The White Paper further stated that environmental education, involving an inter-disciplinary, integrated and active approach to learning, must be a vital element of all levels and programmes of the education and training system, in order to create environmentally literate and active citizens and ensure that all South Africans, present and future, enjoy a decent quality of life through the sustainable use of resources' (RSA, 1995, P. 22). How have the schools responded to this challenge by the new integration policy? How is the environmental learning provided for in the primary school curriculum across SA? What resources exist to make environmental policy workable in schools, and how are these resources mobilised and organised to promote learning? These and other questions formed the basis for the present inquiry An Opportunity to Learn (OTL) study was conducted to explore how one primary school in SA provides OTL about the environment. The main aim of the study was to understand the manner in which teachers integrate environmental learning in the school curriculum. A qualitative research approach was used as a mode of inquiry for this study. Interviews, classroom observations and document analysis were used as data collection methods. The findings of the study suggest that Sechaba Primary School has managed to integrate environmental learning in its curriculum through the help of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and other stakeholders. The research concluded by arguing that OTL about the environment appear to be enhanced where there are strong connections between the schools and NGOs. Specifically, the following set of recommendations was documented: First, local leadership and agency are required to pursue the various opportunities and resources to build the school's capacity for environmental learning. Schools should be encouraged to designate and support local leaders to take responsibility for driving the integration of environmental learning into their curriculum. Such integration is too important and maybe too demanding to be left to individual teachers independently in their own classrooms. Second, converting the latent capacity and/or physical and intellectual infrastructure for environmental learning into real OTL about the environment for the students will continue to remain a challenge for some of the teachers while others have managed the integration in some exemplary fashion. Opportunities for teachers to observe each other, plan together and work collaboratively on issues of integration should be created at school and district level. Third, it is critical that all teachers undergo in service training regarding the implementation of environmental education, and such training should provide teachers with enough time to learn. One of the major limitations of the Department of Education's programme of implementation of the new environmental learning policy has been the inability to provide teachers with enough time to learn and implement the new ideas of the revised national curriculum statement. Finally, it is important to reiterate the importance of providing adequate resources for implementation of environmental learning from the Department of Education. Having said that, however, the case of Sechaba has demonstrated how such resources can also be mobilised from elsewhere outside the system. Encouraging beneficial partnerships between schools and NGOs may in itself be a valuable resource to encourage many primary schools in SA for whom government resources in this field continue to remain inadequate.

Book Educating for Sustainability in Primary Schools

Download or read book Educating for Sustainability in Primary Schools written by Neil Taylor and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education for Sustainability is a key priority in today’s schools, as our society seeks to find a balance between environmental, social, cultural, political and economic imperatives that affect our future. As young children will become the next generation of adults, it is vital that they are educated about sustainability issues, so that they can learn to make informed decisions and take positive action for a sustainable world. Teachers are ideally placed to educate for sustainability issues, and indeed have a responsibility to do so. However, they often lack support and experience in this area, and constraints of current curriculum priorities can inhibit Education for Sustainability being taught effectively in many classrooms. Educating for Sustainability in Primary Schools: Teaching for the Future addresses this problem by showing how Education for Sustainability can be developed within and across all areas of the primary curriculum in the Australian and New Zealand contexts. The book provides a range of educational approaches and examples of activities to support teachers in addressing national requirements for teaching the major primary curriculum learning areas, while simultaneously educating for sustainability. This integrative approach to primary education can promote knowledge of, positive attitudes towards and suitable action for sustainability in relevant, meaningful, enjoyable and creative ways. This book is a valuable resource for all primary teachers who wish to make a real difference to educating children for the future.

Book Teaching and Learning of Environmental Education for Success

Download or read book Teaching and Learning of Environmental Education for Success written by Johaiven Kashaigili and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effectiveness in the teaching and learning of Environmental Education since its introduction into the curriculum of Tanzania has been given less attention. Despite various initiatives done, yet, it has taken a project approach rather than of a classroom. Teachers do not get training in Teacher Education and therefore teach basing on their own exposure to EE issues. However, there has been little effort to develop teaching and learning materials suitable for utilization by teachers and learners. The author conducted a developmental study that aims to reduce challenges faced in the teaching and learning of Environmental Education, in particular primary schools. This book, therefore, provides exemplary teaching and learning materials on waste management that have been designed, developed and tested through various prototypes with consideration of subject matter knowledge, knowledge of context and pedagogical skills. Therefore, this book is the result of that study. The book provides knowledge to all educational stakeholders particularly in developing countries including Tanzania on how teaching and learning of Environmental Education can be enhanced for excellence.

Book Education for Sustainability in the Primary Curriculum A Guide for Teachers

This book was released on 2009-11-11 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education for Sustainability is a top priority in the present international climate, where the media is dominated by environmental, social, political and economic concerns about current problems that will affect our future. As young children will become the next generation of adults, it is vital that they are educated about sustainability issues, so they can be critically aware of the problems our society faces and take positive action to help preserve their future in a rapidly changing world. While teachers are generally concerned about sustainability issues, perceived constraints of current curriculum priorities commonly inhibit Education for Sustainability from being developed in many classrooms. Education for Sustainability in the Primary Curriculum addresses this dilemma by showing how Education for Sustainability can be developed within and across all areas of the primary curriculum in Australian and New Zealand contexts. The book provides suitable approaches and examples of activities to support teachers so that they can address the State and National requirements for teaching all the primary curriculum learning areas, while also addressing Education for Sustainability to promote knowledge of, positive attitudes towards and suitable action for, sustainability in relevant, meaningful, enjoyable and creative ways. The approaches to education for sustainability in this book also support relevant state and national policies, such as the recently introduced Living Sustainably: the Australian Government's National Action Plan for Education for Sustainability (http://www.environment.gov.au/education/nap/), which provides national direction for achieving a sustainable society, and the New Zealand Government's Education for Sustainability (http://efs.tki.org.nz/), which advises schools directly. This book directly supports sustainability, and is a valuable resource for all primary teachers who wish to make a real difference to educating children for the future. This book was released on 2021-06-22 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globally, there is a need to promote and empower practical action towards better environmental conservation and greater sustainability; education aspires to achieve and motivate this – one mind at a time. This book advances a future-oriented vision of the development of environmental sustainability education in settings outside the high-school. It provides practical guidance for teacher practitioners and policy makers in community-oriented environmental sustainability education. It promotes a modern holistic approach to sustainability learning in and by the community through participative engagement with sustainability issues. Its special foci include working with volunteers and citizen scientists, through museums or through re-purposing Higher Education. Its approach emphasises the implementation of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals and cooperation with environmental management professionals. This book’s cosponsors include the International Association for Headwater Control and FAO – European Forestry Commission’s Working Party on the Management of Mountain Watersheds, as well as the International Environmental Education Conferences, Eger, Hungary and the Hungarian Academy of Science’s Subcommittee on Future Studies. Community education has long been a goal for environmental management, whose practitioners realise that interventions, such as biodiversity conservation, are only truly sustainable when supported by the local land-user and stakeholder communities; this depends upon these stakeholders’ understanding why intervention is necessary.

Book A Case Study of The Integration of Environmental Education in the Primary School Curriculum

Download or read book A Case Study of The Integration of Environmental Education in the Primary School Curriculum written by Sekinah Sehlola and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In examining opportunities to learn environmental education at the school and classroom level, we were interested in ascertaining how teachers in primary schools have made sense of the new policy of integrating environmental education in the various learning areas. The researchers wished to find out how workable the policy was in one school context, and what its consequences were in terms of providing better opportunities for learners. Indeed the case of Sechaba Primary has provided some insights into these questions. We now know how some schools have taken the new policy and made it work for them. They have developed their own local environmental policy, which served as a basis for mobilising and organising resources for learning and teaching environmental education at the school. It is this localised policy that seemed important in driving the integration of the environment into the curriculum at Sechaba Primary. Furthermore, the local policy created a platform for mobilising the intellectual and material resources for the integration of environmental education at the school. For us, the most important lesson coming out of this research therefore is the need for local school actors to take the initiative and be the agents of change. Agency and teacher leadership have proved to be cornerstones of the success story of the integration of environmental education at Sechaba Primary. There is, however, still a long way to go in terms of reaching the conceptual depths of the integration and extended participation of learners in environmental education, as the case of Sechaba Primary has illustrated. The lessons learned from the Sechaba Primary case would be applicable in schools that have taken environmental education as seriously as Sechaba Primary has done.

Book Educating for Sustainability in a Small Island Nation

Download or read book Educating for Sustainability in a Small Island Nation written by Jane Spiteri and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-19 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume problematizes the intentions of early childhood education for sustainability (ECEfS) from two new perspectives – the context of small island states and the bi-directional, intergenerational learning about the environment and sustainability that takes place in a variety of contexts, including the family home and school. It questions how belonging to a small island and the children’s home influence learning in the early years of life. In doing so, this book offers new insights and new theoretical perspectives into intergenerational environmental learning in the school, family and beyond. Informed by consideration of the most recent literature in early childhood education and sustainability, this volume also looks at how these informal learning spaces provide young children with the opportunities to enhance further learning in the field, thus portraying the fluidity of intergenerational learning from different theoretical standpoints. It provides a deep insight into ECEfS and intergenerational learning about the environment and environmental issues in early childhood education from a perspective of a small island state by adopting a children’s rights perspective. It additionally explores the relationship between early childhood theories, children’s rights and postcolonial theory.
