Book Topics on System Analysis and Integrated Water Resources Management

Download or read book Topics on System Analysis and Integrated Water Resources Management written by Andrea Castelletti and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2006-10-19 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) paradigm has been worldwide recognized as the only feasible way currently available to ensure a sustainable perspective in planning and managing water resource systems. It is the inspiring principle of the Water Framework Directive, adopted by the European Union in 2000, as well as the main reference for all the water related activity of UNESCO in the third world countries. However, very often, real world attempts of implementing IWRM fail for the lack of a systematic approach and the inadequacy of tools and techniques adopted to address the intrinsically complex nature of water systems. This book explores recent and important contributions of System Analysis and Control Theory to the technical application of such paradigm and to the improvement of its theoretical basis. Its prior aim is to demonstrate how the modelling and computational difficulties posed by this paradigm might be significantly reduced by strengthening the efficiency of the solution techniques, instead of weakening the integration requirements. The first introductory chapter provides the reader with a logical map of the book, by formalizing the IWRM paradigm in a nine-step decisional procedure and by identifying the points where the contribution of System Analysis and Control Theory is more useful. The book is then organized in three sections whose chapters analyze some theoretical and mathematical aspects of these contributions or presents design applications. The outstanding research issues on the border between System Analysis and IWRM is depicted in the last chapter, where a pull of scientists and experts, coordinated by Prof. Tony Jakeman describe the foreseeable scenario. The book is based on the most outstanding contributions to the IFAC workshop on Modelling and Control for Participatory Planning and Managing Water Systems held in Venice, September 28- October 1, 2004. That workshop has been conceived and organized with the explicit purpose of producing this book: the maximum length of the papers was unusually long (of the size of a book chapter) and only five long oral presentations were planned each day, thus allowing for a very useful and constructive discussion. Contributions from the leading world specialists of the field Integration of technical modelling aspects and participatory decision-making Good compromise between theory and application

Book Controversial Issues and Social Problems for an Integrated Disciplinary Teaching

Download or read book Controversial Issues and Social Problems for an Integrated Disciplinary Teaching written by Delfín Ortega-Sánchez and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-30 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scientific literature has been showing that the teaching of controversial topics constitutes one of the most powerful tools for the promotion of active citizenship, the development and acquisition of critical-reflective thinking skills (Misco, 2013), and education for democratic citizenship (Pollak, Segal, Lefstein, and Meshulam, 2017; Misco and Lee, 2014). It has also highlighted, however, the complexities, risks and interference of emotional reactions in learning about sensitive, controversial or controversial historical, geographical or social issues (Jerome and Elwick, 2019; Reiss, 2019; Ho and Seow, 2015; Washington and Humphries, 2011; Swalwell and Schweber, 2016). Recent studies have advanced in the analysis of strategies employed by teacher educators in teaching controversial issues (Nganga, Roberts, Kambutu, and James, 2019; Pace, 2019), and in the curricular decisions of teachers about this teaching (Hung, 2019; King, 2009). These developments confirm the appropriateness of discussing or developing deliberative skills and conversational learning as the most appropriate strategy for the didactic treatment of controversial issues (Claire and Holden, 2007; Hand, 2008; Hess, 2002; Oulton, Day, Dillon and Grace, 2004; Oulton, Dillon and Grace, 2004; Myhill, 2007; Hand and Levinson, 2012; Ezzedeen, 2008). The promotion of discussion on specific social justice issues has also been approached from the use of controversial or documentary images in teacher education contexts, in order to question what is happening or has happened in present and past societies (Hawley, Crowe, and Mooney, 2016; Marcus and Stoddard, 2009). In this context, the aim of this contributed volume is, on one hand, to understand the discourses and decision-making of teachers on controversial issues in interdisciplinary educational contexts and their association with the development of deliberation skills. On the other hand, it seeks to offer studies focused on the analysis of the levels of coherence between their attitudes, positions and teaching practices for the teaching and learning of social problems and controversial issues from an integrated disciplinary perspective.

Book Applications of Work Integrated Learning Among Gen Z and Y Students

Download or read book Applications of Work Integrated Learning Among Gen Z and Y Students written by Gerhardt, Trevor and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2021-04-02 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has become evident within higher education and within (or in partnership with) the workplace that there is a growing demand for an integration of learning within the workplace. Formal and intentional models and processes utilizing experiential learning methods and pedagogy are often referred to as work integrated learning. However, there is a vast cross-conceptualization evident within the field between concepts such as work-related learning (WRL), workplace learning (WPL), work-based learning (WBL), work integrated learning (WIL), and experiential learning (EL). Furthermore, there are vast differences between different applications such as apprenticeships, higher degree apprenticeships (HDA), co-operative education (Coop), internships, placements, projects, sandwich courses, practicums, and more. There is a new focus on the impact of WIL on the future labor force, specifically of generations Z and Y. Applications of Work Integrated Learning Among Gen Z and Y Students presents educational and theoretical concepts related to WIL and Gen Z and Y students as a workforce. The chapters include coverage not only on these concepts, but in-depth research on the implications of WIL on these generations, educational themes in WIL, and WIL innovation. The topic of WIL and all its applications are covered in a global context and for all fields of work, focusing on the skills and expertise gained from the students of work-based learning along with insights on how work-based learning is implemented by teachers and educational administrations. This book is a valuable reference tool for in-service and preservice teachers, administrators, teacher educators, human resources and career development management, practitioners, stakeholders, researchers, academicians, and students interested in insight, theory, and practical examples of WIL from around the world and the impact these have within the workplace as related to generations Y and Z.

Book Wafer Level Integrated Systems

Download or read book Wafer Level Integrated Systems written by Stuart K. Tewksbury and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the perspective of complex systems, conventional Ie's can be regarded as "discrete" devices interconnected according to system design objectives imposed at the circuit board level and higher levels in the system implementation hierarchy. However, silicon monolithic circuits have progressed to such complex functions that a transition from a philosophy of integrated circuits (Ie's) to one of integrated sys tems is necessary. Wafer-scale integration has played an important role over the past few years in highlighting the system level issues which will most significantly impact the implementation of complex monolithic systems and system components. Rather than being a revolutionary approach, wafer-scale integration will evolve naturally from VLSI as defect avoidance, fault tolerance and testing are introduced into VLSI circuits. Successful introduction of defect avoidance, for example, relaxes limits imposed by yield and cost on Ie dimensions, allowing the monolithic circuit's area to be chosen according to the natural partitioning of a system into individual functions rather than imposing area limits due to defect densities. The term "wafer level" is perhaps more appropriate than "wafer-scale". A "wafer-level" monolithic system component may have dimensions ranging from conventional yield-limited Ie dimensions to full wafer dimensions. In this sense, "wafer-scale" merely represents the obvious upper practical limit imposed by wafer sizes on the area of monolithic circuits. The transition to monolithic, wafer-level integrated systems will require a mapping of the full range of system design issues onto the design of monolithic circuit.

Book An Integrated Approach to Curricular Contents

Download or read book An Integrated Approach to Curricular Contents written by Muşata Bocoş and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2013-07-16 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Integrated Approach to Curricular Contents: Particular Features for Primary Schools is closely related to the elements constituting the educational and curricular reform in Romania. The content integrated approach enables the student to undergo a complete development, both on a personal and social level. Competences are acquired and developed in a progressive manner through interactive and cumulative processes leading to both specific competences (pertaining to a certain discipline) and transdisciplinary competences (competences that cross several disciplinary boundaries). Currently, the curricular integrated approach paradigm within the Romanian educational system is reflected in an explicit manner at the level of educational policies. A new evaluation system has been laid down and promoted through the National Education Law no.1/2011 which will lead to the optimization of the whole Romanian educational system. This law conceives and promotes a new evaluation system that will lead to the reconstruction and consolidation of an integrated vision pertaining to both the process of teaching-learning-evaluation and the optimization of the whole Romanian educational system. As such, the present work provides answers to some educational policy challenges and reflects on curriculum policy and educational enforcement. It will be of great use and interest to curriculum scholars, to primary school teachers and to teacher trainees. The work has a pragmatic feature, emphasizing both the authors’ thoughts and the knowledge gained throughout vast experience of teaching. Moreover, certain concrete and validated practical teaching methods are provided, in order to design the integrated activity sequences at primary school level, among which an emphasis on certain curricular aspects that are useful within an integrated approach represents the original feature of the present work and a practical feature of integrated knowledge.

Book Building the Integrated Company

Download or read book Building the Integrated Company written by Malcolm A. Birkin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000: Global competition is increasingly impacting on even the most isolated of companies; the only way for any company to sustain competitive advantage is by tapping into the single remaining area of great potential - the management of people. If we want to be an above-average company, we will need an above-average ratio of above-average people who perform at above-average levels. None of which will happen without above-average levels of management. Malcolm Birkin’s Building the Integrated Company offers a model for exploiting the human potential within organizations. This potential is one which, in previous decades, through an absence of focus on business basics and an adherence to mistaken ideas about sustainable competitive advantage, we have contrived to turn into all-too-limited performance. The first stage in any new learning process is to unlearn the misplaced concepts and bad habits we have developed. Section One of the book describes and contrasts the similarities and differences of American, European and Japanese management and then describes the characteristics of the Integrated Company, which has absorbed and perfected the best systems and philosophies from around the world. Anyone seeking to follow this lead needs to be able to distinguish the realities of these management systems from the myths. Section Two is built around a series of 13 detailed and scored questionnaires, containing over 240 individual questions, enabling the reader to assess every aspect of their business, from management focus to the behaviours of the workforce, against the Integrated Company model. Section Three, the largest and most important section, deals with integration, addressing the practical implementation of the systems and philosophies in a clear, logical and hands-on manner. As the name suggests, the Integrated Company is a holistic model, involving every aspect of the business. Nevertheless, managing people - the unlimited potential - remains the most complex

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book should make educators stop and consider exactly what they mean when they discuss curriculum integration." —Julie Prescott, Assessment Coordinator Vallivue High School, Caldwell, ID "The biggest strength of Fogarty′s work is its clear, concise organization centered on the guiding questions of each chapter." —John C. Baker, Eighth-Grade Social Studies Teacher Salem Middle School, Apex, NC Strategies for moving students towards more holistic and authentic types of learning! For both students and teachers, the mission is essential: to connect ideas, discern themes, and thread skills of various content areas into a cohesive whole. Yet, the question remains: "What does integrating the curricula really mean?" The answers are provided in this updated resource that helps teachers create brain-compatible, learner-centered classrooms and better prepare students for lifelong learning. Based on a four-pronged rationale for using an integrated curriculum—including findings from brain-based research, parental concerns, practitioner challenges, and student perspectives—Robin Fogarty offers ten models that allow teams of teachers to work together to group elements from various content areas into a coherent curriculum that effectively meets standards. The discussion of each model includes: A description of the model How the model can be applied in the classroom Benefits and challenges of the model for teaching and learning Guidelines for when and how to implement the model in the classroom A wealth of reproducibles to aid implementation How to Integrate the Curricula offers the support educators need to integrate concepts, skills, and attitudes and immerse students in content through self-selected, personally relevant learning experiences.
