Download or read book Forest site and productivity written by B. Gessel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1986-01-31 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A knowledge of forest site and forest productivity variables is fundamental to sound forest practice everywhere. The ability to identify sites and site problems correctly and manipulate productivity variables for maintenance or improvement of productivity is the basis of modern forest management. Although the basic facts regarding forest site and productivity apply throughout the world, the application of information and the response to manipulation vary greatly and depend on local forest conditions. The September 1981 World Congress of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) in Kyoto, Japan was the occasion for the special meeting on Forest Site and Productivity sponsored by the IUFRO Site Group Sl.02. This meeting brought together forest site and productivity researchers from across the world to review current thought and the state of site research. Information not ordinarily available in one place was presented at this meeting. As organizer of the session, I decided to attempt to publish the papers in one volume. Arrangements were made with a publisher, Martinus Nijhoff, and also with the authors. The process of publication has taken longer than desirable, but the volume does appear at an opportune time coincident with the 1986 IUFRO World Congress in Yugoslavia. Material contained in this publication will set the stage for Site Group discussions at the 1986 meeting. This volume assembles the thought of forest research workers from many different countries and therefore many different kinds of forests.

Download or read book Stream Ecology written by James R. Barnes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the papers included here were part of the Plenary Sym posium on The Testing of General Ecological Theory in Lotic Ecosys tems held in conjunction with the 29th Annual Meeting of the North American Benthological Society in Provo, Utah, April 28, 1981. Sev eral additional papers were solicited, from recognized leaders in certain areas of specialization, in order to round out the coverage. All of the articles have been critiqued by at least two or three re viewers and an effort was made to rely on authorities in stream and theoretical ecology. In all cases this has helped to insure accur acyand to improve the overall quality of the papers. However, as one of our purposes has been to encourage thought-provoking and even controversial coverage of the topics, material has been retained even though it may upset certain critical readers. It is our hope that these presentations will stimulate further research, encourage the fuller development of a theoretical perspective among lotic ecologists, and lead to the testing of general ecological theories in the stream environment.

Download or read book Shrub Steppe written by Alec Rickard and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Owing to man-made intervention, the shrub-steppe now represents a rapidly disappearing landscape in the arid regions of North America. This book represents a systems-level study of ecological variables affecting water balance, and responses to perturbation. The study focused on a very large, protected, landscape unit, comprising a natural ``watershed'' area located in the semi-arid western United States. Long-term and concurrent data sets were established with a view towards establishing system-level responses to manipulative interventions, and natural perturbations like wildfire. These data sets were established for micrometeorology, climatology, mineral cycling in soils, nutrient and mineral pathways in springs and streams, vegetational dynamics, and population changes on the site. In synthesizing nearly twenty years of data, the more interesting ecosystem level responses concerned vegetational recovery and water balance. For instance, the synthesis uniquely demonstrates the interaction of biotic and non-biotic factors and their integrated effect on regional water balance. However, special attention was also paid to species diversity and the genetic resource pool represented at this site. This book will be of primary interest as a reference resource to land managers and wildlife specialists, and as a research study for scientists interested in systems-level ecology. Conservation-minded citizens who take more than a cursory interest in ecology will also find it interesting.
