Book Sustainable Management of Arthropod Pests of Tomato

Download or read book Sustainable Management of Arthropod Pests of Tomato written by Waqas Wakil and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable Management of Arthropod Pests of Tomato provides insight into the proper and appropriate application of pesticides and the integration of alternative pest management methods. The basis of good crop management decisions is a better understanding of the crop ecosystem, including the pests, their natural enemies, and the crop itself. This book provides a global overview of the biology and management of key arthropod pests of tomatoes, including arthropod-vectored diseases. It includes information that places tomatoes in terms of global food production and food security, with each pest chapter including the predators and parasitoids that have specifically been found to have the greatest impact on reducing that particular pest. In-depth coverage of the development of resistance in tomato plants and the biotic and abiotic elicitors of resistance and detailed information about the sustainable management of tomato pests is also presented. - Provides basic biological and management information for arthropod pests of tomato from a global perspective, encompassing all production types (field, protected, organic) - Includes chapters on integrated management of tomato pests and specific aspects of tomato pest management, including within protected structures and in organic production - Presents management systems that have been tested in the real-world by the authors of each chapter - Fully illustrated throughout with line drawings and color plates that illustrate key pest and beneficial arthropods associated with tomato production around the world

Book Management of Major Insect Pests of Tomato

Download or read book Management of Major Insect Pests of Tomato written by Sachin Chavan and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-05 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) popularly called as "Poormans Orange" is a solanaceous vegetable fruit originated from Tropical America. Tomato is important to human diet because of its specific and high nutritive value and also due to low price. Losses due to insect pests are considered one of the important constraints responsible for low yield of many vegetable crops. In India, as many as 16 pests of different groups have been observed feeding on tomato, commencing from germination to harvesting stages which not only reduce its yield but also spoil its quality. The important insect pests identified on tomato are aphid, jassid, whitefly, leaf miner, fruit borer and leaf eating caterpillar. In the present era of organic farming, exclusive dependence on chemical pesticides is not likely to provide sustained solution to all our pest problems. Lack of effective, economic crop protection strategies is one of the key factors limiting expansion of organic agriculture. Research is therefore urgently required to develop new crop protection technologies as pest problems are limiting expansion of the industry. So keeping this in consideration, the present investigation was initiated.

Book Nematode Management in Tomatoes Peppers and Eggplant

Download or read book Nematode Management in Tomatoes Peppers and Eggplant written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In summary, nematode control measures can be conveniently divided into 2 major categories including cultural and chemical control measures. None of these measures should be relied upon exclusively for nematode management. Rather, when practical and economics permit, each management procedure should be considered for use in conjuction with all other available measures for nematode control and used in an integrated program of nematode management. In addition to nematodes, many other pests can cause crop damage and yield losses which further enforces the development of an overall, Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program, utilizing all available chemical and nonchemical means of reducing pest populations to subeconomic levels.

Book A Novel Push Pull Method of Integrated Pest Management of Thrips and Tospoviruses on Peppers and Tomatoes

Download or read book A Novel Push Pull Method of Integrated Pest Management of Thrips and Tospoviruses on Peppers and Tomatoes written by Kara Tyler-Julian and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis) presents a major problem to farmers of fruiting vegetables by injuring fruits and vectoring Tomato spotted wilt virus. Attempts at controlling this species using calendar applications of broad-spectrum insecticides were ineffective. In contrast, ultra-violet reflective mulches effectively repel thrips and reduce the incidence of Tomato spotted wilt on tomatoes. Furthermore, combining multiple management tactics into a push-pull strategy is effective in other crop systems with other pests. The current study tested various combinations of ultraviolet reflective or black mulch, a kaolin clay spray, and companion plantings of Spanish needle (Bidens alba) and sunflowers (Helianthus annuus) for thrips management in tomatoes and peppers in Florida. Kaolin clay and ultra-violet reflective mulch both reduced thrips numbers on both crops and had a synergistic effect. Additionally, the planting of sunflowers as a companion plant increased thrips numbers on pepper plants, while Spanish needle reduced thrips numbers on tomatoes. Sunflowers attracted higher numbers of an effective predator (minute pirate bug, Orius insidiosus) to the fields than the crops alone. Companion plants of B. alba and ultraviolet-reflective mulch increased yield and decreased Tomato spotted wilt incidence on tomato. Ultraviolet-reflective mulch and kaolin increased yield of peppers. The results of the study show that these combinations can be successfully used as a push-pull method of thrips management in peppers and tomatoes.
