Book Semiconductor Integrated Optics for Switching Light

Download or read book Semiconductor Integrated Optics for Switching Light written by Charlie Ironside and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the technology of switching or modulating light in semiconductor optical waveguides. Currently a key function for optical communications systems is the conversion of data from an electrical signal to an optical signal for transmission in very low loss optical fibres and the converse process of optical to electrical conversion the O/E/O data conversion. This conversion between electronic and photonic signals imposes an energy consumption overhead on optical communication systems. So many research workers have been attracted to ultrafast all-optical switching of data in different formats. As a way of introduction to all-optical switching in semiconductor waveguides the book covers the electro-optic effect, electroabsorption and electrorefraction; effects that can be used in semiconductor optical modulation devices. But the book focuses on all-optical switching using second and third order optical nonlinearities in AlGaAs optical waveguides. It covers a variety of device configurations including integrated nonlinear couplers and Mach-Zehnder interferometers. Further, it provides design software in suit of Mathematica notebooks that can be used to explore the device design.

Book Integrated Optics and Micro Optics with Polymers

Download or read book Integrated Optics and Micro Optics with Polymers written by Wolfgang Karthe and published by Vieweg+Teubner Verlag. This book was released on 2013-11-20 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book is the account of a workshop on Integrated Optics and Micro-Optics with Polymers held in spring 1992 at Mainz and organized by IMM Institute of Microtechnology GmbH, the Max Planck Institute of Poly mer Research, and the Institute of Applied Physics of Friedrich Schiller University at Jena. The field of Integrated Optics and Micro-Optics with Polymers is receiving growing interest from multiple sides. Among the important reasons are the potential of tailoring materials for a specific application, the easy and cheap availability of those materials, and the possibilities of mass fabrica tion with plastiCS. Accordingly, materials researchers, microtechnologists, process engineers, and device builders are active in this field. Their interest is fed from prospective applications of integrated or micro-optical devices and systems in telecommunication, sensors, optical switching and routing, and, in a more distant future, optical processing. The workshop succeeded to bring together more than 130 experimenta lists and theorists, physicists and chemists, device developers and users, materials researchers and process engineers, as well as polymer scien tists and those dealing with anorganic materials, coming from industry, research institutes, and universities.

Book Optical Switches

Download or read book Optical Switches written by S J Chua and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2010-10-28 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical communication using optical fibres as the transmission medium is essential to handling the massive growth of both telecom and datacom traffic. To fully realize the potential bandwidth available on these optical fibres, other components of the optical network system have to be developed, ranging from detectors and multiplexers to buffers and switches. This book addresses the different technologies which can be applied to switching optical signals. An optical switch functions by selectively switching an optical signal delivered through an optical fibre or in an integrated optical circuit to another. Several methods are available and each relies on a different physical mechanism for its operation. The various physical mechanisms used are discussed in the main chapters in the book which cover electro-optical, thermo-optical, micro-electro-mechanical (MEMS)-based and semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA)-based optical switches. The book also covers switching based on optical nonlinear effects, liquid and photonic crystal optical switches as well as fibre, holographic, quantum optical and other types of optical switches. Each chapter discusses the choice of materials, fabrication techniques and key issues in switch design. With its distinguished editors and international team of contributors, Optical switches: materials and design is a standard reference for the telecommunications industry and those researching this important topic. Reviews this commercially significant area of research and addresses the different technologies which can be applied to switching optical signals Provides a balanced look at the developments which can be defined as key trends in optical switches Major optical switches including electro-optical, thermo optical and magneto-optical switches are discussed and the respective theory and principles of each explored
