Book Low Photoluminescence Hollow Waveguide Platforms for High sensitivity Integrated Optical Sensors

Download or read book Low Photoluminescence Hollow Waveguide Platforms for High sensitivity Integrated Optical Sensors written by Yue Zhao and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation presents research on the fabrication of optofluidic sensor platforms, which consist of integrated hollow waveguides and solid waveguides. Antiresonant reflecting optical waveguides (ARROWs) filled with liquids or gases, can be used for high-sensitivity sensing in applications of biotechnology, chemical synthesis, and analytical chemistry. The fabrication method developed for integrated ARROW sensing platforms utilizes standard microfabrication processes and materials. Dielectric cladding layers are deposited on a silicon wafer using plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) or sputtering. A sacrificial material is then patterned over the bottom cladding layers by photolithography. Additional dielectric layers are deposited around the core, forming the structure of the waveguides. Integrated solid-core waveguides can be easily created by etching a ridge into the topmost dielectric cladding layer. The hollow core waveguides are then formed by wet etching the sacrificial core material.

Book Transverse Patterns in Nonlinear Optical Resonators

Download or read book Transverse Patterns in Nonlinear Optical Resonators written by Kestutis Staliunas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003-02-27 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growth of regularity from disorder, the evolution from the simple towards the complex, and the spontaneous formation of spatio temporal patterns in general are questions which intrigue everybody. This has been one of the hasic philosophical topics from ancient to modern times. Is nature able to create something fundamentally new by itself? If yes, how does this creation occurs? Or does nature only reproduce something which was already encoded in it, from the very beginning? This remained a topic exclusively for philoso phers until very recently, and it was only a few decades a. go that physicists started to convert this seemingly purely philosophical subject into a scientific discipline: a scientific discipline like other scientific disciplines, where one re lies on formulas and equations, on nunlerical simulations, and on laboratory experiments. This book is not about general questions related to pattern formation and self organization in nature. It is about spontaneous patterns in just one part of nature in nonlinear optical systems, and, more precisely, in nonlinear optical resonators. Nonlinear optical systems represent a small part of nature, hut a very representative part: one can observe here nearly all the known symmetries of patterns, one can generate nearly all known types of localized strlictlires and one can realize nearly all known spatial instabilities and spatial bifurcations.

Book Integrated Optics Theory and Technology

Download or read book Integrated Optics Theory and Technology written by Robert G. Hunsperger and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our intent in producing this book was to provide a text that would be comprehensive enough for an introductory course in integrated optics, yet concise enough in its mathematical derivations to be easily readable by a practicing engineer who desires an overview of the field. The response to the first edition has indeed been gratifying; unusually strong demand has caused it to be sold out during the initial year of publication, thus providing us with an early opportunity to produce this updated and improved second edition. This development is fortunate, because integrated optics is a very rapidly progressing field, with significant new research being regularly reported. Hence, a new chapter (Chap. 17) has been added to review recent progress and to provide numerous additional references to the relevant technical literature. Also, thirty-five new problems for practice have been included to supplement those at the ends of chapters in the first edition. Chapters I through 16 are essentially unchanged, except for brief updating revisions and corrections of typographical errors. Because of the time limitations imposed by the need to provide an uninterrupted supply of this book to those using it as a course text, it has been possible to include new references and to briefly describe recent developments only in Chapter 17. However, we hope to provide details of this continuing progress in a future edition.
