Book excerpt: Soil and Fertilizers: Managing the Environmental Footprint presents strategies to improve soil health by reducing the rate of fertilizer input while maintaining high agronomic yields. It is estimated that fertilizer use supported nearly half of global births in 2008. In a context of potential food insecurity exacerbated by population growth and climate change, the importance of fertilizers in sustaining the agronomic production is clear. However, excessive use of chemical fertilizers poses serious risks both to the environment and to human health. Highlighting a tenfold increase in global fertilizer consumption between 2002 and 2016, the book explains the effects on the quality of soil, water, air and biota from overuse of chemical fertilizers. Written by an interdisciplinary author team, this book presents methods for enhancing the efficiency of fertilizer use and outlines agricultural practices that can reduce the environmental footprint. Features: Includes a thorough literature review on the agronomic and environmental impact of fertilizer, from degradation of ecosystems to the eutrophication of drinking water Devotes specific chapters to enhancing the use efficiency and effectiveness of the fertilizers through improved formulations, time and mode of application, and the use of precision farming technology Reveals geographic variation in fertilizer consumption volume by presenting case studies for specific countries and regions, including India and Africa Discusses the pros and cons of organic vs. chemical fertilizers, innovative technologies including nuclear energy, and the U.N.’s Sustainable Development Goals Part of the Advances in Soil Sciences series, this solutions-focused volume will appeal to soil scientists, environmental scientists and agricultural engineers.

Book Integrated Nutrient Management in Wheat

Download or read book Integrated Nutrient Management in Wheat written by Kumar Santosh and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-20 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuous applications of only needy nutrients through chemical fertilizers have deleterious effect on soil health leading to unsustainable yields. Wheat contributes about 30% of total grain production in India. The major constraint in boosting up the wheat production is the poor soil health. Therefore; there is a need to improve nutrient supply system in terms of integrated nutrient management involving the use of chemical fertilizers in conjunction with organic manures coupled with input through biological processes. Balanced fertilizer is the application of essential plant nutrients in right proportion and in optimum quantity for a specific soil crop condition. Imbalanced use of fertilizer led to the deterioration in the soil fertility and decrease in soil productivity. Higher yield at balanced nutrition is a safe guard to soil fertility. Integrated plant nutrient management helps in meeting the goals of balanced fertilization.

Book Agronomic Rice Practices and Postharvest Processing

Download or read book Agronomic Rice Practices and Postharvest Processing written by Deepak Kumar Verma and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses three important agricultural aspects of rice: physical characteristics, physico-chemical characteristics, and the organoleptic aspects. Divided into sections, the book first examines recent trends and advances for higher production and quality improvement, focusing on the effects of climate on rice cultivation and climate-resilient agricultural practices in rice. The volume goes on to cover nutrient management for rice production and quality improvement. Chapters also address weed management and postharvest processing practices for improved rice production. With chapters from renowned scientists, researchers, and professors, this book will be a useful reference for rice researchers working in the area of agronomic practices, postharvest processing, and quality improvement in rice.

Book Managing Soil Drought

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rattan Lal
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2024-06-10
  • ISBN : 1003844863
  • Pages : 441 pages

Download or read book Managing Soil Drought written by Rattan Lal and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-06-10 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global drylands, covering over 40% of Earth’s land surface, are important among worldwide ecoregions and support large human and livestock populations. However, these ecologically sensitive ecoregions are undergoing a rapid transformation resulting from climate change, socioeconomic and political factors, increases in population, and ever-growing demands for goods and services. Managing Soil Drought addresses basic processes and provides specific case studies throughout covering the protection, restoration, and sustainable management goals of global drylands under changing and harsh climatic conditions, including fragile and vulnerable ecosystems. The book is written by numerous researchers, academicians, practitioners, advocates, land managers, and policymakers involved in bringing about transformation in these regions important to human and nature. It includes information on basic strategies of sustainable management of global drylands aimed at improving water use efficiency through choosing appropriate species, developing new varieties, using organic and inorganic amendments, and scaling up innovative farming systems. This volume in the Advances in Soil Sciences series is an essential read for development organizations and policymakers involved in improving crop productivity and sustainability in drought-prone regions; students, researchers, and academicians interested in sustainable management of water resources; and those involved in emerging concepts of regenerative agriculture, agroecology, and conservation agriculture.

Book Rainfed Farming Systems

Download or read book Rainfed Farming Systems written by Philip Tow and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-09-16 with total page 1324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While a good grasp of the many separate aspects of agriculture is important, it is equally essential for all those involved in agriculture to understand the functioning of the farming system as a whole and how it can be best managed. It is necessary to re-assess and understand rain-fed farming systems around the world and to find ways to improve the selection, design and operation of such systems for long term productivity, profitability and sustainability. The components of the system must operate together efficiently; yet many of the relationships and interactions are not clearly understood. Appreciation of these matters and how they are affected by external influences or inputs are important for decision making and for achieving desirable outcomes for the farm as a whole. This book analyses common rain-fed farming systems and defines the principles and practices important to their effective functioning and management.
