The research main motive was to find out the best-integrated practice which can be used to find out the best INM practice that can help to overcome this problem.

Book excerpt: Agriculture is the main occupation in India and about 75% of its population depends directly or indirectly on agriculture for their livelihood. It is the dominant sector that contributes 18% of the gross domestic product. Thus, agriculture is the foundation of the Indian economy. The maximum share of Indian exports is also from the agriculture sector. As the population of the country is increasing trem- dously, approximately at the rate of 19 million every year over the existing popu- tion of more than 1 billion (approximately 1. 18 billion), the food grain production must necessarily be increased. This can be done by increasing crop production to match the population growth rate of 2. 2% per annum, which is expected to stabilize at 1. 53 billion around 2050. There is no doubt that the Green Revolution in India during the late 1960s brought self-sufficiency in food grain production, mainly through the increase in rice and wheat crop yields – the two main crops of the country which play an important role from food security point of view. However, the excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides, and the neglect of organic manures for these crops, has resulted in the deterioration of physical, chemical and biological health of the ri- and wheat-growing soils. Owing to the deterioration of the health of these soils, the productivity of the rice–wheat cropping system has now either got reduced or in some places has become constant for the last decade.

In general, repeated applications of composts, particularly yard waste and cow manure composts, provided longer-term benefits in improving crop yield and enhancing soil health and N use efficiency, despite their limited impact on soil inorganic N concentration and inconsistent effects on crop quality. Grafting significantly improved the tomato plant growth and yield, although it might delay the harvest season and tended to decrease certain fruit quality attributes. However, the use of grafted tomato plants showed limited effects on enhancing soil health parameters. This study also enhanced our understanding of how soil health properties affect agronomic benefits when integrating cover cropping, organic fertilizers, and composts in high tunnels for improved organic vegetable production in Florida sandy soils.

Moreover, soil and plant microbiomes help to promote plant growth, either directly or indirectly by means of plant growth-promoting mechanisms, e.g. the release of plant growth regulators; solubilization of phosphorus, potassium and zinc; biological nitrogen fixation; or by producing siderophores, ammonia, HCN and other secondary metabolites. These beneficial microbial communities represent a novel and promising solution for agro-environmental sustainability by providing biofertilizers, bioprotectants, and biostimulants, in addition to mitigating various types of abiotic stress in plants. It is defined by the USDA as “the continued capacity of soil to function as a vital living ecosystem that sustains plants, animals, and humans”. The breadth of this definition has allowed “soil health” to become a context-specific definition, letting soil health be defined in terms of the desired outcomes. In the context of agronomic nutrient management, the primary desired outcome is a tightening of the nutrient cycle to minimize losses to the environment. Here, I use the framework of soil health to understand how soil health indicators influence and are influenced by on-farm nutrient management practices. Three separate studies were conducted to: 1) understand the factors influencing the efficacy of the most widely used biological soil health metric, mineralizable carbon, 2) determine the effect of 12 years of phosphorus (P) restriction on biological and physical soil health in three Ohio sites, and 3) integrate biological soil health indicators into nitrogen (N) management strategies across the Corn Belt. The first study found that mineralizable C was variable across and within soil test labs. However, even after controlling for variations in methodology, a significant amount of the variability was soil-specific. The second study found very few effects of P restriction on soil biological and physical health. However, P restriction slightly increased organic P stocks and resulted in consistent shifts in the balance between the processed and easily-metabolized portions of the active C pool. In the third and final study, an increase in soil biological health was shown to increase the yields for a given N fertilization rate, as well as having slight predictive abilities in predicting whether a site would be responsive to N fertilization. This study also showed that soil biological health may be slightly increased at moderate N fertilization rates. Collectively, these results show that biological soil health metrics can be used in nutrient management schemes, provided that a careful analysis and interpretation of the data is undertaken.

The 8 is focused on integrated nutrient management in rice-wheat cropping system, while 9 on oilseed based, 11 on soybean based, 13 on vegetable and 23 on seed spices based cropping systems. The issues related to SSNM, protected agriculture, soil chemical, biological and microbial diversity are discussed in 12, 14 and 18, respectively. The aspects related to system based nutrient budgeting, soil carbon management and sequestration, balanced crop nutrition in relation to crop diseases, economics and nutrient modeling have been duly discussed in s from 19 to 25.
