Book excerpt: Emerging conceptualizations of a 'four pillar' model of sustainability, which include cultural vitality, environmental responsibility, economic health, and social equity as the basis of community resiliency (Hawkes 2001), have influenced a variety of local planning initiatives in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Caribbean, and Europe. Focusing on the cultural dimension of this sustainability framework, this paper explores the conceptual and operational challenges and gaps that are highlighted as the model is applied in community sustainability planning contexts. Methodologically, the paper is primarily based on a review and analysis of strategic approaches to conceptually and operationally integrate culture within community sustainability planning in Canada, located within two sources: (1) the Integrated Community Sustainability Plan (ICSP) guides developed by provinces and municipal associations, and (2) a selection of ICSPs developed by individual communities. In closing, the paper reflects on the process of migration or adaptation of community planning paradigms to the community sustainability framework as observed in these ICSP materials and other initiatives.

Book Bridging the gap in community sustainability planning implementation

Download or read book Bridging the gap in community sustainability planning implementation written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The questionnaire served to explore: 1. The state of sustainability planning in Canada; 2. The current state of integration of sustainability in municipal decision-making, particularly around infrastructure investments; and 3. The factors that contribute to and hinder sustainability integration into decision-making. [...] Commitment from senior leadership within the municipality (city manager, directors, mayor and council) demonstrates the importance of sustainability to staff and members of the public and leads to higher rates of integration throughout the organization. [...] Training and the development of staff to better understand the fundamentals of the sustainability plan and their role in the implementation process are critical to the successful integration of sustainability into decision-making. [...] Interviewees suggested that in many cases, the benefits of the formal adoption of a plan can include the formation of an Office of Sustainability with dedicated staff and budget, which encourages the integration of sustainability into decision-making. [...] One third of interviewees noted that the allocation of sufficient resources through the budgeting process was critical to the implementation of their sustainability plan both from a human resources perspective and for the development of tools and pilot projects.

Book Hardwired Humans

Download or read book Hardwired Humans written by Andrew O'Keeffe and published by Great Bosses Pty Ltd. This book was released on 2018-09-01 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offices are not our natural habitat. Leadership is easier when we understand the nine instincts that still drive human behaviour. With the Industrial Revolution only 250 years ago, we left our hunting, gathering and village societies to work in offices and factories. The behaviour that ensured our ancestors' survival on the savannah plains of Africa over the millennia is alive and well in today's workplaces. The nine instincts explain the reasons, and the solutions, to the challenges that leaders commonly face. Based on the author's wide experience in large organisations combined with witty true stories of chimps from Gombe, Tanzania and Taronga Zoo, Sydney, Hardwired Humans explains the psychology behind the human instincts of social behaviour. As you read this entertaining book, you will learn how the instincts of clan connections, hierarchy, gossip, politics, snap judgments, status displays and sexual competition continue to drive modern office interactions just as they have driven human interaction for millennia. The book shares a practical framework that helps makes sense of human behaviour and allows leaders to manage more effectively. In a note introducing the book, Dr Jane Goodall calls it a 'compelling book'. The Australian Financial Review Boss magazine highly recommends the book as one 'that will captivate anyone who finds the "people stuff" confounding.'

Book Popular Music Scenes and Cultural Memory

Download or read book Popular Music Scenes and Cultural Memory written by Andy Bennett and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the ways in which music scenes are not merely physical spaces for the practice of collective musical life but are also inscribed with and enacted through the articulation of cultural memory and emotional geography. The book draws on empirical data collected in cites throughout Australia. In terms of understanding the relationship between music scenes and participants, much of the existing popular music literature tends to avoid one key aspect of scene: its predominant past-tense and memory-based nature. Nascent music scenes may be emergent and on-going but their articulation in the present is often based on past events, ideas and histories. There is a noticeable gap between the literature concerning popular music ethnography and the growing body of work on cultural memory and emotional geography. This book is a study of the conceptual formation and use of music scenes by participants. It is also an investigation of the structures underpinning music scenes more generally.
