Book Handbook of Catchment Management

Download or read book Handbook of Catchment Management written by Robert C. Ferrier and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-09-11 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the fundamental requirement for aninterdisciplinary catchment based approach to managing andprotecting water resources that crucially includes anunderstanding of land use and its management. In thisapproach the hydrological cycle links mountains to the sea, andecosystems in rivers, groundwaters, lakes, wetlands, estuaries andcoasts forming an essential continuum directly influenced by humanactivity. The book provides a synthesis of current and future thinking incatchment management, and shows how the specific problems thatarise in water use policy can be addressed within the context of anintegrated approach to management. The book is written for advancedstudents, researchers, fellow academics and water sectorprofessionals such as planners and regulators. The intention is tohighlight examples and case studies that have resonance not onlywithin natural sciences and engineering but with academicsin other fields such as socio-economics, law and policy.

Book Catchment and River Basin Management

Download or read book Catchment and River Basin Management written by Laurence Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-04-17 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central focus of this volume is a critical comparative analysis of the key drivers for water resource management and the provision of clean water – governance systems and institutional and legal arrangements. The authors present a systematic analysis of case study river systems drawn from Australia, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, UK and USA to provide an integrated global assessment of the scale and key features of catchment management. A key premise explored is that despite the diversity of jurisdictions and catchments there are commonalities to a successful approach. The authors show that environmental and public health water quality criteria must be integrated with the economic and social goals of those affected, necessitating a 'twin-track' and holistic (cross-sector and discipline) approach of stakeholder engagement and sound scientific research. A final synthesis presents a set of principles for adaptive catchment management. These principles demonstrate how to integrate the best scientific and technical knowledge with policy, governance and legal provisions. It is shown how decision-making and implementation at the appropriate geographic and governmental scales can resolve conflicts and share best sustainable practices.

Book Integrated Catchment Planning and River Basin Management

Download or read book Integrated Catchment Planning and River Basin Management written by John L. Gardiner and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The implicit partnership between multi-functional catchment management plans and landuse planning, with complementary economic instruments and legislation, has the potential to deliver sustainable development in terms of the water environment through a process which may be called 'integrated catchment planning'. The introduction of such a process of integrated catchment planning and management within the highly-developed River Thames Basin, where the many demands made on the water environment require complex multi-functional decision-making, has led over the past 10 years to a commitment to mathematical modelling of the whole of the River Thames and its tributaries. The paper describes in outline the various facets integrated catchment planning and river management, as exemplified by the River Thames experience, and discussess the contextual approach taken to river modelling.
