This class of systems is described by linear differential equations with periodic coefficients in the state space. The classical Floquet theory on linear differential equations with continuous, periodic coefficients has been extended to treat linear differential equations with piece-wise continuous, periodic coefficients. The extended Floquet theory is applied to the stability analysis of modulated feedback control systems with continuous and piece-wise continuous carriers. It is shown that analysis and synthesis of many classes of linear feedback systems may be formulated from a unified point of view by using Volterra integral equations of the second kind. (Author).

Short-time stability assures, in a finite time interval, that all inputs bounded by a prescribed constant Greek epsilon result in outputs bounded by a second prescribed constant. The study of short-time stability is divided into two categories: undriven systems and driven systems. Undriven systems are represented by a set of differential equations. Sufficient conditions for short-time stability are given in terms of the coefficients. Driven systems are represented by their impulse response. A necessary and sufficient condition for short-time stability in driven systems is given directly in terms of impulse response. Sufficient conditions for short-time stability in feedback systems, in terms of the open loop impulse response are also included. In addition the concept of shorttime C-equivalence, essentially a structural stability concept, is introduced. Necessary and sufficient conditions for two systems to be short-time C-equivalent are presented. (Author).

The conference brought together researchers from universities, industry, and government laborato ries in the United States, Germany, Italy, France, Canada, and Sweden. There were forty-five invited talks, including seven talks by students. The conference was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and endorsed by the SIAM Activity Group on Control and Systems Theory, the Mathe matical Programming Society, the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP), and the International Association for Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (IMACS). Since its inception in the 1940s and 1950s, Optimal Control has been closely connected to industrial applications, starting with aerospace. The program for the Gainesville conference, which reflected the rich cross-disci plinary flavor of the field, included aerospace applications as well as both novel and emerging applications to superconductors, diffractive optics, non linear optics, structural analysis, bioreactors, corrosion detection, acoustic flow, process design in chemical engineering, hydroelectric power plants, sterilization of canned foods, robotics, and thermoelastic plates and shells. The three days of the conference were organized around the three confer ence themes, theory, algorithms, and applications. This book is a collection of the papers presented at the Gainesville conference.
