Book excerpt: One of the most pressing issues in contemporary European societies is the need to promote integration and social inclusion in the context of rapidly increasing migration. A particular challenge confronting national governments is how to accommodate speakers of an ever-increasing number of languages within what in most cases are still perceived as monolingual indigenous populations. This has given rise to public debates in many countries on controversial policies imposing a requirement of competence in a 'national' language and culture as a condition for acquiring citizenship. However, these debates are frequently conducted almost entirely at a national level within each state, with little if any attention paid to the broader European context. At the same time, further EU enlargement and the ongoing rise in the rate of migration into and across Europe suggest that the salience of these issues is likely to continue to grow. This volume offers a critical analysis of these debates and emerging discourses on integration and challenges the assumptions underlying the new 'language testing regimes'.

The book shows that the discursive construction of integration in the British public sphere shifted from one of cultural pluralism to one of neo-assimilation, informed by a wider spread of neo-liberalism that necessitates self-sufficiency and discourages state assistance. Situated within the Critical Discourse Studies tradition, the book employs a Discourse Historical approach to the data and includes innovative analysis combining 'top-down' (policy documents and media texts) and 'bottom-up' (focus groups with migrants and new citizens) sites of discourse production. In doing so, it provides a broad and detailed perspective of public discourse on integration in the UK. The book shows that understandings of 'integration' are diachronically and synchronically fluid and as such, the term plays an important role as a 'consensus concept' that different actors can support whilst construing it in different ways. Analysis of the data further reveals that integration is interdiscursively linked to other social fields, such as the economy, terrorism and public spending. The book also argues that integration policy has become directed not just at new migrants, but also long-term British citizens and that this has the potential to have considerable impact on community cohesion.

Starting from the idea that linguistic philosophy must take into account how the social structure of the linguistic community may influence and direct the way its language is used, a critical method of analysis is proposed, developing Speech Act Theory in a way suitable for this purpose. The main guideline of this proposal is the consideration that a theory of action rather than a theory of meaning should be taken as central in the analysis of language. The notion of illocutionary force, the problem of intentions and conventions in the constitution of speech acts, the definition of context, and the classification of speech acts, are then discussed. Based on the conclusions of this discussion a pragmatic method for the analysis of language is formulated.

Book excerpt: A common method of conflict resolution employed by academics, media specialists, and policy makers is the argument, a form of positional discourse in which competing points of view vie with one another. However, this format has its limitations, particularly when it is applied to the conflicts of "postmodern" society. Recently, writers in the fields of argument and conflict resolution have described ways of dealing with conflict that go beyond argument. These approaches to conflict management involve practices and attitudes that are typically demonstrated by people at higher stages of psychological and cognitive development. Using the developmental model of Ken Wilber as a frame, an investigation was done of the work of theorists and practitioners of argument and conflict management. the conclusion was reached that a different approach to conflict management was emerging in our world, one that could be housed in Wilber's "vision-logic" stage and the "higher" stages of other developmental theorists. This new approach was called integral discourse, which was described as going beyond prior discourses (the discourses of physicality, emotionality, authority, and positionality) in terms of expanded content, higher levels of participant maturity, and greater emphasis on relationship. the suggestion was made that this new integral discourse holds possibilities for handling conflicts that have proved resistant to traditional methods of conflict resolution.
