Book Migration in South America

Download or read book Migration in South America written by Gioconda Herrera and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-08-16 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access regional reader examines emerging issues around new migration patterns in South America and their relationship with changing migration policies over the last twenty years. The first part of the book looks at conceptual discussions on mixed and survival migration, the link between migration and extractivism, and the specific character of transit migration. A second part examines how these debates have led to transformations in state policies, and the shift in government policies from a human rights-based approach towards more restrictive ones. Finally, the third section revisits the relationship between racism, xenophobia and colonialism in contemporary migrations. As such this book makes an interesting read to students, academics, policy makers and all those working in the field.

Book OECD Development Pathways A Multi dimensional Approach to the Post COVID 19 World for Paraguay

Download or read book OECD Development Pathways A Multi dimensional Approach to the Post COVID 19 World for Paraguay written by OECD and published by OECD Publishing. This book was released on 2024-07-24 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paraguay has faced multiple shocks in the past five years as the COVID-19 pandemic was bookended by severe droughts that affected two key sectors, electricity production and agricultural production. The economy has demonstrated remarkable resilience during this period, supported by policy measures commensurate with the magnitude of the challenge, like the USD 2 billion fiscal response to the pandemic. These shocks have also exposed key underlying vulnerabilities in the country’s economy and development model, including reliance on agricultural exports, informality, limited revenue-raising capacity, and exposure to the consequences of climate change. The response and stimulus recognised these issues and found new ways to address or circumvent them, albeit in many cases not efficiently or permanently. This report draws lessons from policy measures implemented during the pandemic and recovery phase and applies them to current strategic challenges. In doing so, it highlights policy priorities to make Paraguay’s development path more inclusive, stronger and more resilient.

Book The Archaeology of Colonialism

Download or read book The Archaeology of Colonialism written by Barbara L. Voss and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-31 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines human sexuality as an intrinsic element in the interpretation of complex colonial societies. While archaeological studies of the historic past have explored the dynamics of European colonialism, such work has largely ignored broader issues of sexuality, embodiment, commemoration, reproduction and sensuality. Recently, however, scholars have begun to recognize these issues as essential components of colonization and imperialism. This book explores a variety of case studies, revealing the multifaceted intersections of colonialism and sexuality. Incorporating work that ranges from Phoenician diasporic communities of the eighth century to Britain's nineteenth-century Australian penal colonies to the contemporary Maroon community of Brazil, this volume changes the way we understand the relationship between sexuality and colonial history.

Book The Romani Movement

Download or read book The Romani Movement written by Peter Vermeersch and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2006 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collapse of communism and the process of state building that ensued in the 1990s have highlighted the existence of significant minorities in many European states, particularly in Central Europe. In this context, the growing plight of Europe's biggest minority, the Roma (Gypsies), has been particularly salient. Traditionally dispersed, possessing few resources and devoid of a common "kin state" to protect their interests, the Roma have often suffered from widespread exclusion and institutionalized discrimination. Politically underrepresented and lacking popular support amongst the wider populations of their host countries, the Roma have consequently become one of Europe's greatest "losers" in the transition towards democracy. Against this background, the author examines the recent attempts of the Roma in Central Europe and their supporters to form a political movement and to influence domestic and international politics. On the basis of first-hand observation and interviews with activists and politicians in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia, he analyzes connections between the evolving state policies towards the Roma and the recent history of Romani mobilization. In order to reach a better understanding of the movement's dynamics at work, the author explores a number of theories commonly applied to the study of social movements and collective action.

This book was released on 2012-07-12 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book deals with developing the concept of professional vision (noticing and knowledge-based reasoning) among future primary and secondary school teachers of Biology, Mathematics, English as a foreign language, Art, and Social Studies. Researching the use of video interventions during teacher-training programmes, the authors show that short-term interventions do not significantly improve professional vision, which is in contrast to student teachers’ perception of the practice. The book also uses case studies to uncover individual differences in student teachers’ learning, taking into account their various backgrounds and approaches. This is a valuable resource for teacher educators who are considering the incorporation of video-intervention courses into study programmes and for researchers interested in the development of professional vision.

Book Postsocialist Europe

Download or read book Postsocialist Europe written by László Kürti and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2009 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now that nearly twenty years have passed since the collapse of the Soviet bloc there is a need to understand what has taken place since that historic date and where we are at the moment. Bringing together authors with different historical, cultural, regional and theoretical backgrounds, this volume engages in debates that address new questions arising from recent developments, such as whether there is a need to reject or uphold the notion of post-socialism as both a necessary and valid concept ignoring changes and differences across both time and space. The authors' firsthand ethnographies from their own countries belie such a simplistic notion, revealing, as they do, the cultural, social, and historical diversity of countries of Central and Southeastern Europe.
