Book excerpt: Nous étudions dans cette thèse l'impact de l'intégration monétaire sur les stratégies de localisation des banques européennes. La première partie de cette thèse étudie les effets macrofinanciers de l'intégration monétaire. Dans un premier temps, nous testons la convergence des modèles d'intermédiation en Europe. Nous trouvons que les pays de la zone euro convergent sur la période étudiée aussi bien en termes de taux d'intermédiation de crédit qu'en termes de taux d'intermédiation de marché. En revanche, pour les pays hors zone euro, la convergence n'est observée que pour le taux d'intermédiation de marché. Dans un second temps, nous étudions les mouvements des investissements directs bancaires transfrontières (IDBT) à travers un test d'hypothèse de convergence. Nous trouvons que tandis que dans la zone euro, les IDBT se font en direction des pays proches en termes d'intermédiation de crédit, hors zone euro, c'est la proximité en termes d'intermédiation de marché qui a un impact positif sur les IDBT. Dans la seconde partie de cette thèse, nous adoptons une approche microfinancière. Nous analysons les formes de localisation géographique des conglomérats financiers en Europe. Dans un premier temps, nous proposons un modèle théorique permettant de montrer le lien entre les différentes formes d'asymétrie d'information et le choix des types d'activités des banques à l'étranger. Nous montrons en quoi l'adoption d'une organisation de type congloméral permet aux banques de surmonter leur désavantage informationnel sur un marché étranger. Dans un second temps, les résultats du modèle théorique sont testés empiriquement. Nous trouvons que le choix de la forme de la filiale de la banque dans un pays d'accueil dépend du mode de financement des agents non financiers dans ce pays.

The essays in this volume enlarge the range of historical evidence on the causes and potential cures for financial crises. While not neglecting the United States or Britain, the usual focus of financial historians, it includes studies of financial markets in times of crisis in Japan, Sweden, France, and other countries to achieve a truly global and historical perspective. As a result of the research reported here the reader will be made aware of several neglected factors that have shaped financial crises including the most recent crisis. This book shows that the decision-making processes of nineteenth-century bankers contemplating high-risk financial markets like Greece are just as complex as present-day investment decisions. Book excerpt: Is over-optimism about a country's future growth perspective good for an economy, or does over-optimism also come with costs? In this paper we provide evidence that recessions, fiscal problems, as well as Balance of Payment-difficulties are more likely to arise in countries where past growth expectations have been overly optimistic. To examine this question, we look at the medium-run effects of instances of over-optimism or caution in IMF forecasts. To isolate the causal effect of over-optimism we take an instrumental variables approach, where we exploit variation provided by the allocation of IMF Mission Chiefs across countries. As a necessary first step, we document that IMF Mission Chiefs tend to systematically differ in their individual degrees of forecast-optimism or caution. The mechanism that transforms over-optimism into a later recession seems to run through higher debt accumulation, both public and private. Our findings illustrate the potency of unjustified optimism and underline the importance of basing economic forecasts upon realistic medium-term prospects.
