Soucieux de donner à ses activités de recherche un caractère résolument appliqué, il fonda en 1988 la société ATEDIS S.A., chargée d'appliquer en Afrique ses conceptions en matière de stratégie de développement. Les propositions de cet ouvrage émanent donc à la fois d'une réflexion poussée et d'un apprentissage assidu sur le terrain. L'auteur ne se contente pas de montrer en quoi les modèles usuels de croissance-développement demeurent non pertinents (1ère partie); bien plus, après une étude de l'impact de ces modèles dans son propre pays (2e partie), il propose des stratégies alternatives dites d'interface (3e partie) qui, dans leur cadre d'application, corrigent les structures socio-économiques pour les rendre coopérantes. Mieux, il montre que les stratégies d'interface sont en réalité des stratégies d'intégration économique.

In addition, he applies the theoretical principles to current projects such as the European Common Market and Free Trade Area, and to Latin American integration projects. In offering this theoretical study, the author builds on the conclusions of other writers, but goes beyond this in providing a unifying framework for previous contributions and in exploring questions that in the past received little attention – in particular, the relationship between economic integration and growth (especially the interrelationship between market size and growth, and the implications of various factors for economic growth in an integrated area).
